USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll

Not in my opinion. The powers that be want to see more scoring. End of story.

Well that's at odds with moving the 3 point line back 2 years ago.

I believe the new rules changes are intended to bring back the skill of the game and minimize the physicality.

I agree. James Naismith is probably rolling in his grave the way basketball (college and pro) is being played these days. Sounds like women's college game and maybe men's is addressing the issue a little. We'll see the effect soon.

One could argue that helped scoring by spreading the floor to give players more room to penetrate, run backdoor cuts, and pass into the paint. Also, from a team standpoint, I don't think it really affected our shooting percentage much, although I haven't researched that. I don't think they moved the line back to slow down scoring...but if so, that was just stupid.

I think we have more skill now than ever before whether the rules change or not. I think the higher ups took a long look at women's basketball and saw interest dropping and knew they had to do something to generate more interest. The best way to do that is to increase scoring. Look at the NBA, I don't think fans would attend those games in huge numbers if the scores were 61-58.

Sherri told you why the committee did what they did. It is no secret that we need to debate. She, and the members of the committee, were very up-front about exactly what they were doing and why.

If there is an argument, it is with the committee.

Limit touches of offensive player- implemented to give the offensive player an advantage.

Stop impeding movement- obviously implemented to give the offensive player freedom of movement and get open, ultimately to give the offense an advantage.

Stopping the arm bar- implemented to give the offensive player an advantage.

Obviously, the best way to increase scoring is to give the offensive player more advantages which is exactly what all of these rules are designed to do. If this fails to get the desired results, I would not be surprised to see them reduce the time on the shot clock.

It will be interesting to see which players/teams adjust to the officiating the quickest. Athletic players will higher basketball IQs should be able to adjust fairly quickly. Others may be more likely to get in foul trouble even after conference begins.

I think osewe is ranked too low and I hope we can overcome the loss of Maddie and hold onto 14 and maybe get up to 10th.

Learn to debate or discuss without ascribing words that were never actually stated or implied: "dirty," "racially insensitive." Can you discuss without twisting words or meanings?

Again I ask, was it not the WV style of play that the rules changes were designed to overcome?

The new rules were put in place to help increase scoring and tempo in women's basketball. The hope is that this will help make women's basketball more interesting to watch and bring in more viewers. Let's be honest - it's all about the money. They we're not put in place to stop the way certain teams play in terms of their style of play. Otherwise, you would have heard an uproar about how unfair it is to be adding new rules that are intended to affect certain teams' styles of play.

Big 12 fans have been calling West Virginia a "dirty" team in reference to their style of play ever since they joined the Big 12 and started giving our teams problems. To be fair, the only team that didn't struggle against them last year was Baylor - who still had 19 turnovers in Waco. I was certainly not the first one to bring up the word "dirty" and was not implying that fans meant it in a way outside of how they play basketball.

I do, however, have a problem with people using the term "thug" or "thuggy" in reference to a group a young ladies whatsoever. It is a term that is predominantly used in reference to African American males. These are young ladies who are playing the way their coach has asked them to play. Coach Carey's mantra is "Physical for 40" so if you have a problem with anyone it should be him.

I apologize sybarite if you felt like I was attacking you or calling you racist or anything of the like. That was not my intention. I just feel like the Big 12 is a strong conference and we should be happy for the success of the other teams. The stronger they are - the more prepared for the NCAA tournament we will be. I'm pretty sure the Sooner ladies would rather make it to the Final Four of the NCAA's than win the Big 12. I just don't like badmouthing the other Big 12 schools because I know that once the Big 12 season is over and the NCAA tournament begins - I will be cheering on ALL of the Big 12 schools.

1. The new rules were very deliberately put in place to curtail the type of play that had been adopted by several teams. My opinion, which I did not state, is that these teams were attempting to overcome deficiencies in talent by negating the effect of talent and good coaching.

2. I did not take anything at all from your accusations since I did not make the statements that you associated with Big Twelve fans. I thought you were trying to imply that I had made such statements which did not reflect on me, but on the accusation.

3. I did think that you were implying that AustinTxSooner was using racially-sensitive terminology, which was your interpretation of a way that you perceive a word as being used. I reject that he is a racist or that the word assumes racism. When I think of thug, I think of Marlon Brando and motorcycles or white supremicists.

I'm sorry but calling young women "thuggy" is just wrong - point.blank.period. The way you associate the word was not the way it was being used - What are the similarities between female college athletes and Marlon Brando, motorcycles, and white supremacists? If that's what you think of when you think of "thug" then you would have to agree that WV is not "thuggy"

The bottom line is that calling these young women negative names of ANY kind is unwarranted and shows poor character.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

First, I didn't use the word. I DID state what I associated with the word. We don't have to agree to anything.

And, I think you owe AustinTXSooner an apology.

I don't feel he owes me an apology. He was the first one to use the word thug in this thread. I just asked why he thought it was racially insensitive. I still don't know why.

If you ACTUALLY read what I wrote, you would see I said that in ANOTHER thread the term "thuggy" was used. I didn't just pull it out of thin air...

In ESPU: West Virginia
Stringmusic : "WVU was awfully "thuggy"

And I have heard fans and seen posts online where people have used the term "dirty" in reference to the West Virginia women's team. To say that they are "mugging" their way to a victories and that "they may not even win a game" with the new rule changes is just plain silly.

I didn't direct anything negatively towards AustinTXSooner so there isn't a need to apologize.

Let's honestly not turn this into a big thing. Debate is good but I hate blog/forum arguments.

Was only trying to make the point that it wrong to use derogatory terms in reference to young ladies.

So, you made accusations, but against nobody? Why make the accusations in the first place? You just felt we needed the emotion?

I try to block the West Virginia game from memory, as I do with any Sooner loses, but what I remember about it was that they were larger girls that did tend to do a lot of bumping, which threw us off our shoot-shoot-shoot game. Thuggy? Don't remember it getting as bad as Texas A&M in the aughts, so maybe just physical.

As a former member of a group that could make womens basketball players cry (to their athletic departments with complaints about our taunting), aka Sooner Showmen, taunting is part of college sports. Internet and in person, it's going to happen.
