Voepel on Texas

I agree that Kim and Karen still have to prove how well they can coach (Dawn Staley too). But, having great players is the first step in winning a national championship. Coaching them is next followed by some luck, i.e., no key injuries.

Sherri does a great job coaching when she has the players. As Barry Switzer used to say, "it's not about the X's and O's, it's about the Jimmys and Joes." Even if Sherri is a better coach than Kim and Karen, she's still going to lose unless she signs the same type players they are. I think the 2017 class is critical as we must sign a great class.

Great point and you are right about it being hard to beat that kind of talent. You almost have to have one of your best games and them having a bad game. At the end of the day you don't want to go into a game thinking that way.

Barry tended to be a bit generous with his praise. He won with the "Jimmy's and Joe's" that he selected with his talent evaluation. A lot is made about the recruiting victories with Billy Sims, etc. But, he won because of his evaluations of people like George Cumby who didn't even believe himself that he would ever play D-1 football. He won because he saw that Pruitt was a halfback, and John Goodman was an outstanding defensive tackle prospect instead of a mediocre tight end prospect. He didn't win all of the recruiting battles, except with one class in which he got everyone that he wanted in Texas. Curiously, that class didn't win a national title. He won because he knew who to get to fill in.

Barry won because he was a great recruiter, a great coach, and a great motivator. But recruiting for football at OU is much different than basketball. Sherri (and Lon as well) are not going to sign every #1 player in the US every year. Football has the possibility of doing that almost every year. Remember OU and Donnie Duncan wanted to disband WBB back in the day. They have never talked about doing that to football.

Barry is my favorite coach at OU - ever. But he did end up with some rogues. It appears Sherri is trying to avoid that at all costs. That is one of the reasons we backed off of Griner.

Kim recruits for court skill first and "other factors" second. Sherri tries to balance the two. Considering the equal results over the years I strongly prefer Sherri's method.

The results are not equal. We have no national championships.

By equal I was referring to the links in the post above. Being season long, conference titles and results are probably a better measure than just looking at NC's. Winning a National Championship is a lot about who else is in the Final Four - and how good they are when you get there.

Not even suggesting it would not be good to win one - or ten - but they are hard to come by and involve both quality, talent, and luck. Bob has found that it is extremely hard to get them even when you are in the final game several times. In my opinion, it is not reasonable to hold Sherri to a higher standard than Bob, Billy, or Lon, all three great coaches, but just one NC between them. Admittedly Billy deserved one - but that luck factor came into play - having to play Kansas on basically their home court - and them playing well above their normal skill set that day. Again, so much luck is involved in winning NC's. Kansas was absolutely NOT the best team in the US that year - but won the NC. My dad still talks about the Big-12 tournament (which he attended) that year. Kansas was really marginal that year. K State drummed them in the Big-12 tourney. But Kansas (a pretty low seed) was given - in effect - the Big-12 assignments the entire NCAA tournament, so while OU (the #1 seed and Big-12 champ by a mile) was playing all over the country, Kansas played the entire tournament close to home. NCAA Championships are so much about luck.

If Kim would have been hired at Baylor the same year that Sherri was hired in Norman, those numbers would be different.

Coale has been at OU 4 more years than Mulkey has been at Baylor and has 2 less national championships.

If you are proud of Kim's accomplishments, I would ask you to consider whether anyone would ever say that Kim is what the sport of women's basketball should be about. When you value KIm and Baylor, it is time to close down college sports.

Exactly! Sherri had coached more than a hundred games before Kim was hired.

Yes, and if I recall OU was winning championships like clockwork before Sherri got here. So she should have stepped right in and had 3 or 4 undefeated seasons from the beginning. If she was even a mediocre coach that would have happened. ;)

Apparently some of you wish that Kim was our coach. But I do not agree with you.

Sometimes I wish Sherri showed the fight on the sideline that Kim does... different strokes for different folks, sometimes our staff just sits there while other teams make big runs, Lon is also pretty laid back, but I have seen him get up for things he didn't like... You can tell Kim's kids will play hard for her because they know she'll have there back.

I remember a game vs Louisville we let get away from us, up by about 10 or so going in to half time we let them come all the way back, when asked about it Sherri said the score is just back 0 to 0, that sounded like she was just out coached.

Not me! I wish all the Kim lovers and Karen lovers would go share the love on Hypocrite U and whorn boards!

I'm just thankful Boren and Castiglione are Sherri lovers! :ez-laugh:

OU went 22-9 in 1995 and dropped to 12-15 in 1996.

When Sherri came in 1997 the record was 5-22. OU improved to 8-19 the next year then to 15-14 in 1999. In 2000 we were 25-8 which started us on a good run.

Kim took over a program that was 7-20 before she arrived to finish 21-9 her first year and a trip to their first ever NCAA tourney. They improved to 27-6 her second year and they were ranked #7 in the country.

I realize you don't like Kim but, you have to admit that she and Sherri can both coach.

Those long runs followed by dry periods are frustrating. But we may not be the only ones who feel that way. Just the other day there was lots of chatter about Lon letting that happen with the men's team.

It would be nice if they could be stopped but I think it is mostly due to periods where a team is just missing shots. I always think we should go to the inside game more when we see that happening. I also think we need to develop someone who can consistently hit the short jumper - and not shoot so many 3's when they stop falling. Drob was so good at that.

We dont have anyone who shoots a pullup jump shot, or fakes a shot to get the defender off their feet. I think nearly everyone on the team except KayKay and ViVi could do both and be deadly. I dont understand why not.

I don't understand that either. Very basic to good basketball.

There is no one that allows the game to play on and jumps on officials less than Lon Kruger. It doesn't affect his coaching. The guy CAN coach!

I've never seen Muffet McGraw, Tara VanDerVeer, Marsha Sharp, Jody Conradt, etc, etc do strip teases on the sideline either!

Or Karen Aston. In the Texas game I watched recently Karen looked so professional. Both the way she was dressed and the way she handled herself.

Just to get it in print, remind me. Which WBB coach apparently wishes she could work in a Gentleman's Club? She has taken a lot of heat over that little display.
