Guys I have been around college basketball for a very very long time and I don't recall ever seeing 6'10 to 7' footer shoot three's like W&M did last night. I am trying to figure out how in the world W & M can be project to be 7th in the conference. I was really impressed with Knight but so glad we turned up the defense for the win.

The casual fan will see we played W&M and be disappointed we only won by the margin we did.

If you actually watch basketball, specifically college basketball, and watched that game last night you'd see that W&M is a DAMN good team. Knight might be the best player we play all year. Even outside of the 2 big guys they have they have guys who can hit open shots & they played hard and with emotion.

That was a big win for us last night, especially doing it in the way we did. Being able to fight back the entire game & finally pull it out is a great learning & bonding experience for this roster.

I was surprised to see W&M ranked 181 in Kenpom (they were even lower before last night's game).

well WnM has like 4 xfers so it's a very experienced team and one of their better players didnt even play I believe (thorne?). you can't really trust those ratings that start off with a bias from the year past. experience as a factor is second only to skill and higher than pure talent. they had decent skills, superior experience, and some talent.

they're underrated and we performed well against them. but still well beneath what we can do. a good test.

W&M is not a bad team, maybe top 50, but we didn't shoot well. They had the lead, played good D and dictated tempo. Home court was big when we got loud in the last 10.

They had a played a very soft schedule thus far. But if they play their remaining schedule the way they played against us last night, they will shoot up in his ranking.

Quite a contrast between this thread and the game thread from last night.

W&M may not have earned the respect of the pollsters, but they danged sure earned mine! I had a feeling that game would not be easy. When I read the team bios and learned the Tribe had two bigs who were averaging right at 20 ppg, one an NBA prospect last year, an easy win did not cross my mind.

Truth is, we were lucky to win that game. To say Brady didn’t play well is an understatement. But he wasn’t the only one. The entire first half was a struggle, especially from three where we were 0-9 as a team. Fortunately, Reaves, Doo and Harmon played just well enough to keep us in the game and in position to pull out a win at the end. Williams and Iwuakor were also bright spots.

That’s not to take anything away from W&M. The so-called experts are wrong! William & Mary is a really good team. I’ll be more surprised if they’re not in the running for 1st place in their conference, but definitely not 7th.

other than wofford who is always pretty good ..

You're right...Wofford usually is pretty good. Wofford is actually ranked about 60 spots higher than W&M in Kenpom because of their schedule....even though W&M beat them at Wofford. But when Wofford has stepped up in class this year (Mizzou, Butler), they've been beaten soundly.

Does Kenpom use anything from previous year as a starting point? Or is everyone starting even?

I expected their big guys to be big guys who couldn’t move. Picture someone like Polla. Instead Knight was a stud and Van Vilet was very good, too. I doubt any team in the B12 has post players any better.

Yes. He uses a couple of components involving returning production and initial, perceived SOS based off last season. But those are incrementally filtered out as the season progresses.

Well stated.

Also, the current KenPom rankings show that next week will be a very good test. Stanford isn't as highly rated as the other teams, but is still a good game on a neutral floor, and whoever we play Tuesday will definitely give us a chance for a quality win.

Best thing that came out of this game is we found a seventh player (VI) who can contribute this year. Hoping J Hill will get some time in next few games and we can add him to this list.

You don’t think Kuath will contribute? Struggled last night, but I think he, Williams and Iwuakor will be the main 8.

I got to thinking last night after the game: Considering W&M was founded in 1693 and was named after British royalty, I wonder if they ever, once the American Revolution was underway and in the years after independence was achieved, considered changing the name of that institution to, I dunno, George & Martha University or something along those lines.

Kur hasn't played poorly, he just doesn't play a lot. Last night against a very legit front-court he had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and a block in 10 minutes.

In the Oregon State game he had 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 block, and 1 steal in 5 minutes.

In the UTSA game he had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 10 minutes.

He must suck on defensive assignments or something because production isn't really a problem.

I was puzzled as to why Hill only got 2 minutes. I tried to find something he did wrong and I couldn't. I really think OU will need him over the course of the year.

Good question. Jalen played well early on, but he hasn’t seen the floor much since his injury. Makes me wonder if he has fully recovered from his concussion?
