There are 3 games we have a shot at winning..Tech, Neb and OSU.

Hypothetically, if we fail to win another game the rest of the season, will Capel be back?

He's going to be back either way. And, unless we get absolutely killed by every team down the stretch, I support him coming back. Personally I feel we're going to win 3 more games, then 1 in the Big 12 tourney, to get some real positive momentum for next year...

We have a history of swooning at least a little at the end of the regular season under Capel.

Last year we were 4-4 finished 4-12 in conference 4-13 if you count the conference tournament

09 we lost 3 of the last 5, 2 of those games without Blake, and we lost the Conference tournament game to OSU. Then made a tournament run to the Elite 8 to lose to the eventual champs.

07 we lost the last 6 games after a 15-8 start. Ended 16-15.

That's not a good record for Capel

He's safe for next year because of the 4 game win streak.

Great thread.
Glad to see some fresh material on this board.

Use proper puncuation in the poll questions. ARGH, ARGH, ARGH. MOFOs.

Next year should be the test for Capel. If he can't get us back to the tournament next year then it will be the perfect time to get rid of him b/c the following season we will return all starting five with Blair, Pledger, Osby, Fitz, and Goff being seniors and Clark, Newell, and Neal being juniors along w/ other players.

I feel like at this point he will be back regardless, but that won't stop me from being severely disappointed if we lose out. After that 4 game winning streak I really hoped to make it to 6-10 in the league. If we do that I will be very satisfied with the team's progress this year.

I would have asked the question differently. Hypothetically, if we fail to win another game the rest of the season, SHOULD Capel be back?

Capel is 15-25 in his career in the last 10 games of the season... they dont tend to shine down the stretch, lol.

But IF he loses EVERY game from here on out, he should be fired. You can't beat CU, ISU (last place team), Tech (next to last place), and Baylor (at home) and keep if your job after last season. The Baylor win was nice, but in 16 games you cant have one good win at OU.

I agree with capelfan52. This poll is meaningless. Capel will be back regardless of the outcome of the last three or four games we play. A few weeks ago I would not have supported his return under any circumstances. But this team has improved a great deal since then, so I'm fine with giving him another year.

Beyond this season, however, he will not have my support for anything less than competing for a conference title and a birth in the NCAA tourney. Six years is more than enough time to prove he can coach without Blake Griffin in the lineup. Heck, I could have coached the team OU put on the floor in BG's sophomore season.

I hate it when someone backs up their argument with facts. I prefer to read the EMOTIONAL/HATER no accountability responses. lol

Dismiss Jeff's entire body of work as the leader of the OU basketball program.
* Ignore the fact that 3 out of 5 years Jeff did not make the NCAA tourny.

* note: (The Sooners will not win the Big 12 tourny this year.)

Don't hold Jeff accountable for jeopardizing the program by hiring OT.
Refuse to acknowledge the fact that Jeff is solely responsible for the current state of the OU basketball program.

Disregard the failures in Coach K's coaching tree.
Forget the fact that after 5 years nobody can tell you what Jeff's basketball philosophy is.

Forget about his dismal graduation rate.
Overlook the fact he made NT a captain.

Shrug off the fact he wasted a scholarship on a kid like KH.
Give him a pass for not doing his due diligence on TMG.

Coach Capel's biggest mistake was miscalculating (or assuming he could improve) the character or lack thereof displayed by 3 McD AA's who all left at once decimating the program. The current state of the OU basketball program has little to do with his perceived lack of coaching ability, which is ludicrous. Very few programs can lose 3 talented underclassmen and reload instantly.

He needs to be given another opportunity to bring in some talent and to see some improvement.

I agree, if we don't make the NCAA Tournament next year, Capel is gone.

How many teams finish under .500 for a few years in a row and then come back and make the dance the next year?

Not many. But that is the barometer Capel should be judged by after two straight losing seasons and three in five years. In my book, anything less is unacceptable!

Are you implying the odds are stacked against Jeff? If so, why bring him back? I am still waiting for the sunshine pumpers to give 3 VALID reasons why Jeff should be back next season.

1. He is a nice guy.
2. It's not his fault.
3. He listens to Hip Hop music.
4. He cares about his players past and present.
5. He looks nice with a goatee.
6. OU is a football school.
7. For the sames reasons Joe kept BBsr for all of these years.
8. Because I have seen the light.
9. I have a crystal ball.
10. He is a GREAT recruiter.
11. His basketball philosophy.
12. He is on the verge of greatness.
13. He is defensive minded.
14. He has a great offensive mind.
15. Because Joe knows what is best for the program.
16. Because Joe is at practice on a daily basis.
17. Because his record speaks for itself.

I agree that Capel should get one more year, with the NCAA tournament as the expectation to keep his job.

IMO one of the biggest factors in replacing a coach that people often ignore is how well a program is set up for a new coach. I think you'd be much better set up for a new coach a year from now than after this season (more open scholarships to work with, more distance between the new coach and last year's circus).

I don't think a new coach would come in and win right away at OU anyway. Might as well make sure you're making the right move. Capel's shown enough to get one last chance to get things straightened out.

This, & what good coach would come in next year?
