2019 NCAA Coaching Carousel Thread

Kelvin signed the extension.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/26439214/sampson-signs-long-term-deal-houston

Been telling folks he wasn't going to leave there. They gave him this shot and have treated him really well. He wasn't going to do them dirty by leaving. Especially for Arkansas. And can you really see Kelvin living in LA? lol

Be interesting to see what happens with UH when conference realignment talk heats back up.

Good for Kelvin! UH is where he needs to be. Arkansas or UCLA would have been a bad move for him. He can retire in Houston now and leave the program with one of his assistants, likely Kellen or HP.

Kellen was named Head Coach in Waiting. Not sure about that move personally

What ever happen to Eddie Sutton son? I can't recall the name but wasn't he at one time highly thought of?

Scott is an assistant for Boyton at osu.

Sean is in an advisory role to Beard at Tech

Those deals seldom ever work out. I'm sure that was Kelvin's condition to stay.

He said it wasn't. Publicly. And he also said that it might not work out that way, and that Kellen is continually interviewing for head jobs, and if he gets offered the right one, Kelvin would tell him to take it.

I agree they seldom work, but it sounds like this one isn't binding or any kind of a big deal.

If that's what was needed to keep KS, then it was worth it. I cant see KS hanging it up for another 4-5 years at least. If Houston continues its success, Kellen will get HC calls before that time comes. The question is -- will the offers be good enough to take? They will probably be worse spots than Houston, but it will give him the chance to step out of his dad's shadow, and won't put him in a situation to force his dad out. He might be able to get interest from schools like SMU, UTEP, SFA.

Since I became a college basketball fan, I don't recall many instances where a son followed his father as head coach at the same school. I think it is a rare thing. The Oklahoma State experiment is recent and close to home, and it did not end well.

After playing point guard for his dad Eddie, Sean Sutton was an assistant coach at Ole Miss for one season (1993), and then became a long-time assistant for his father at OSU (1994-2006; 13 years).

Sean was the head coach at OSU for 2 years (2007; 2008). Like his father before him, he had addiction issues. In Sean's case it was prescription pain-killers. Sean is now 50 years old and is an "advisor" to Chris Beard, the head basketball coach at Texas Tech.

DePaul Basketball and the Meyers (Ray and Joey): When I first became interested in college basketball in the 1970s, the DePaul Blue Demons were a NCAA basketball power. Back in those days, there were relatively few games on TV, but DePaul basketball was on TV a lot. I guess it was a combination of DePaul being in a big TV market (Chicago) and Depaul was winning at a high level.

Ray Meyer was head coach at DePaul for an amazing 42 years (1943-1984). There was no question about him getting into every one of the applicable Hall of Fames.

Joey Meyer was an assistant coach at DePaul for eleven seasons under his father, and then succeeded him as head coach in the 1984-85 season. Joey Meyer lasted 13 seasons as Head Coach at DePaul. Early on, Joey continued his father's success, as he led DePaul to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in his first eight seasons, including back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances 1986 and 1987. However, after the 1992 season, Joey Meyer never again reached 20 wins nor the NCAA Tournament. His last five seasons at DePaul were a downhill slide, with terrible results (11-18; 3-23) in his last two seasons at DePaul.

Sorry for the history. The idea of a head coach-in-waiting brought back memories of Joey Meyer. Personally, I do not like the idea of a head coach-in-waiting, especially in a parent-child set up. I guess it can work, but I think the odds are against it. College coaches are in a high-profile public arena, and the opportunity for criticism is great. Rightly or wrongly, when nepotism is involved, any criticism is magnified by a large amount.

If I was a plumber that owned my own business, I might want my son to follow in my footsteps, learn the business, and take over the family business when I retire. A family business situation is not constantly in the public view, and that makes all the difference. Also, a big-time college basketball program is not a family business.

Whether it is Sean or Kellen, their fathers are handing them a tough act to follow in a glass house with a lot of people watching closely. Hopefully, Kellen will get an opportunity to run his own program in a year or two. He seemed like a fine young man all those years in Norman, and he seems to be a fine young man now. I hope it works out for Kellen.

Types of partiality: Nepotism refers to partiality to family members. Cronyism refers to partiality to a partner or friend. Favoritism, the broadest of the terms, refers to partiality based upon being part of a favored group, rather than job performance.

just as a note they were 5-27 the year before he took over

You guys actually think that TCU, a program that had the resources to hire Dixon, should follow that up by hiring Henson? Henson has done well with UTSA, and I think he could do a decent job, but he'd be a very underwhelming hire. I'd imagine TCU has their sights set on somebody more like Matta or Turgeon.
