2020 Recruiting

Kruger doesnt care what rivals says. Offers are there.

Shot 45% from 3.

Always find a spot for a shooter.

Well, he only has 2 offers. So in this case, a whole lot of D1 coaches disagree.
So tell me what me and all those coaches are missing.

I would be disappointed if our coaches didn’t take a hard look at this kid. Don’t let his size and baby face fool you. He scored 42 points in leading Booker T. Washington to the Class 6A State Championship.

Watch the highlight video Seymore Cox posted. Trey Phipps can flat out score! Still not convinced, here’s another highlight video.

Players like Trey Phipps who can fill it up from deep usually end up at Okie State or Tulsa. Remember the two smallish white kids who shot the lights out at OSU? Phil Forte was one of them. Maybe it’s our turn. I like his connection to Bryce Thompson. Can you say package deal? It worked for Okie State when they got Forte and his high school teammate (can’t make myself say his name). Hi

OU may not offer in the end, but I honestly think we could do worse. Besides, isn’t Trey the son of OU alum Conley Phipps?

Yep, not only that but Conley Phipps is the head coach at BTW so he coaches both Trey and Bryce Thompson.

Trey and Bryce also play together on the same AAU team, a team coached by Rod Thompson.

I like where we’re going with the Phipps/Thompson connection. Sure would be nice if it continues at OU!

I think most major programs will be turned off by Phipps being a 6'1" SG. From the eye test he appears to be more like 5'10". At 5'9" Keiton Page lit us up for years which is enough for me to warrant Phipps getting a long hard look.

I know that Conley originally went to OU and then transferred to Northeastern. I wonder if there are any ill feelings.

Ou offered today.

You can never go wrong offering a pure shooter. Davidson was smarter than anyone else offering that one guy...having Rotnei Clarke with BG woulda been nice also.

Even more embarrassing for p5 coaches was letting Seth curry go to liberty out of HS. You think they would have learned their lesson with steph.

Unless things changed significantly this summer - the Clark / Forte / K Page comparisons are off to me. I saw Clark and Page both play in HS and have seen Phipps many times. Different level of competition, but Phipps is not the ball handler either of those players were and, IMO, would not be a point guard in college - unless things have changed. A 6-1 shooting guard is likely the concern. I think a comp for Phipps is Tim Heskett. So if you think Heskett helped OU, then I think you would like Phipps. He can shoot and knows the game very well.

Is this guy can shot 39.82% from three for his career on over 4 attempts per game, then yes he will help the team.

Tim Heskett is 5th all time in 3's made, 5th in attempts, and 7th in percentage at OU

I agree with your assessment. I worry about his athleticism as anything but a shooter off the bench. And if that is what he is being recruited as, I'm fine with it. But I think there is a chance he doesn't he never really meaningfully contributes while at OU. If he even ends up here.

I am good with taking Phipps and I loved Heskett, they are just limited in their role. I believe teams played more zone during Heskett's days and it might have been easier for him to get his shot, but having a great shooter is generally a plus!

Exactly, not everyone has to be a star, a sharpshooter off the bench is a role every team needs filled

Agreed. A sharpshooter off of the bench is a role our opponents generally use to an advantage, not one utilized nearly often enough in OU’s offensive arsenal. I think Austin Reaves will be that kind of weapon next season. I have no problem whatsoever with using a scholarship on a recruit with Trey Phipps’ potential.

I don't think you mean to imply otherwise, but Reaves will be far more than a shooter, and definitely won't be a bench piece. He shoots it as well as any of the stereotypical sharpshooters, but his game is far more well rounded than guys who just fill that role.
