A Look at #1 Seed Virginia (30-3)

Apparently this board has turned into the go-to place for people who need to anonymously take shots at unpaid amateur athletes to make themselves feel better. It's an embarrassment.

They get paid plenty. Just not in cash. Stop that nonsense.

It was a tough one and we all knew that going in, but I like the way the guys responded and didn't let the game get out of hand. UVA plays their style of ball as well as anyone and they are a #1 seed for a reason. Outside of missing some open 3s and a couple of bad passes, we played about as well as expected given the circumstances.

Someone mentioned above in the thread.....that this season can be a good learning experience for the returning guys. Had we won a few more tight games during the season, we are likely playing against a 3 or 4 seed instead of a 1 seed in our second game. Thus, I hope this is something that sticks with the guys going into the offseason......every game counts and finding ways to claw out additional wins can only help in the long haul of the season.

And no need to dawg certain players. We all know there are some guys on this team that have limitations.....let's just leave it at that.

Yes, I hope Doo becomes the "quiet leader"....just don't see him as the rah rah guy.

Maybe Manek?...JB or maybe Harmon comes in and takes over.

Freeman...the guy is who he is. He's a spot shooter who's def skills are lacking. I believe he's graduated...congrats to him.

lol...yup. These guys have traveled first class...which some may never had ever done. Got a 100K education (hopefully they did the work to get a VIABLE degree). All kinds of clothing, gifts...

If you've never seen the athlete's cafeteria vs common students...go take a look. My daughter was a walk-on at KU for rowing...+1000$ worth of gear, free pharmacy meds, open snack bar, meal plan at athletic cafeteria...which was very good food.

There are a lot of regular students that would gladly commit to "working" as many hours as the athletes do, in order to graduate debt free.

When you are a member of a team be it athletic, academic or work related there are certain expectations to be met and it has nothing to do with money.

And you forgot to mention that they get to assume the role of "big man on campus" which leads to some fringe benefits such as sex which some would normally have to pay for or buy a bag to facilitate the process.

Thanks for that clarification. Now I feel much better seeing my fellow OU fans taking anonymous shots at these kids and being associated with this behavior.

So if you cannot say it face to face then you are precluded from saying anything. It's quite simple, you've never said an unkind word about someone behind their back. Got it.

Exactly. Isn't it funny that so many of the people who are on board with taking cheap shots at the players were the same people who were crying foul when they got called out Friday themselves? I guess the "glove are off" philosophy is a one-way street.

You used a tiny sample size when a much bigger one was available to you. That's why it's cherry picking. And I don't really care if the rest of the conference has been poor. The NCAA tournament has nothing to do with the Big XII. If you want to talk about how he has performed in the Big XII, we can do that -- he's 2-8 while at OU. I'm willing to bet that's the worst of any team during his time here.

The whole big8 & Big12 history for every team is a small sample size? Get real dude. I’ll admit his conference record is bad but his ncaa tournament record at OU is good.

Some people on here believe that players should never be criticized, and that only positive things should be said. I don't completely agree with that, but I respect that -- as long as they're consistent. Some posters are consistent, but others are the furthest thing from it. What is it that makes it okay to regularly hurl personal insults directly at other posters on this forum, yet it's not okay to state that one of our players is not a good enough basketball player to warrant a valuable sholarship? I got a big kick out of one of the posters in this thread calling Calixte selfish and saying that CJ can't hit meaningful shots, yet later was up in arms when Freeman got called out.

It's a life of convenience for some. Must be nice.

just wanted to quote this to make sure others saw it and that i wasn’t imagining anything.

It's ok, you can call me out directly rather than the oblique reference. If you can't tell the difference between me making statements that are directly basketball-related and another poster saying that someone is a waste of a scholarship and should move on, you are beyond help. And despite calling Calixte a selfish offensive player, I also specifically complimented him and Reynolds for their contributions and their role in getting the team to the tournament. I've also never said only positive remarks are appropriate. Legitimate basketball discussion and criticism is perfectly fine.

You believe it not to be true or it's not proper to state it. It was tongue in cheek but at the same time it is an obvious reality for some. People held in esteem probably get to see things most of us don't.

You say that now, but if I mention you by name you throw a huge fit. A few times I've gotten genuinely concerned that your BP spiked to levels that put you at risk for a stroke. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, regardless of their posting style.

We give players scholarships to play basketball, so stating that somebody doesn't deserve a scholarship is directly related to basketball. To my knowledge, nobody has questioned Freeman as a person, called his mom a whore, hopes he breaks a leg or gets AIDS, etc. Honestly, saying Calixte is selfish is a lot closer to a personal insult than saying Freeman doesn't deserve a basketball scholarship at a school of our caliber. And for the record, I agree with your statements about Calixte, and don't have an issue with them. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Also, I had you in mind as one of the posters constantly throwing around personal insults, which of course, you did again in this response.

Like I said, we're competing against the Big XII in the Big XII tournament, which he is 2-8 in. When we go to the NCAA, we're competing against the entire NCAA, which consists of...350 or so teams? So yes, 9 out of 350+ is a tiny sample size. I could understand cutting out mid-majors, but again, we're looking at about 15% of the data even if you exclude conferences like the Big East. So yes, a very small sample size.

Also, looking at 8 years of somebody's 30 year career is also a small sample size. 8 years can easily be influenced by one great season. With 30 years, it's much harder.

Lol, there are some creepy old men on this board. Talking about how much sex these guys have as an excuse to **** talk them from a keyboard.
