All-Access: Five-star PG Trae Young and his family's recruiting roundtable

2005 class, but if you want to add him that is fine.

5 star - #12 player
2nd round draft pick- carved out a nice NBA career as a role player
Never signed a big NBA contract

was chalmers really that long ago? wow!

Somebody send that list to Trae and Ray!

Chalmers also spent 3 years at KU instead of the 2 years that Ray Young was hinting at for Trae.

Wow, I didn't even realize Chalmers was that long ago. I feel like Selby's thing was a long time ago, but forgot Chalmers was a jr when they won the title in 08

That's the biggest issue with Self. He can get some players to the NBA, but it's not usually his guards. His bigs thrived with Danny Manning. He's still getting the 5 stars to the NBA, but it's more of a wing type player. I'm not sure any coach has really developed pgs very well.

Lets take a quick look at KU's PG recruits in the past 10 years. I'll use Rivals rankings

2014
Devonte Graham- 4 star - #36 player
Will play a 4th year next year and likely at best a 2nd round pick.

2013
Conner Frankamp- 4 star - #34 player
Transferred to Wichita State

Frank Mason - 4 star - #76 player
4th year senior. Has developed into a very good player. Likely a 2nd round NBA draft pick.

2011
Naadir Tharpe - 4 star- #92 player
Undrafted and D Leaguer

2010
Josh Selby - 5 star - #1 player
Drafted in 2nd round- playing in Isreal

2009
Elijah Johnson- 5 star - #24 player
Undrafted- playing in Turkey

2008
Tyshawn Taylor - 4 star - #77 player
2nd round draft pick and played 2 years with the Nets- playing in Isreal

Outside of the 10 year time frame, but Sherron Collins was 2006 class
5 star- #21 player
Undrafted, but did get a cup of coffee with Charlotte

Not a lot of evidence showing that Self puts PG in the league, even those that were 5 stars.

Great post!

Basically Kruger took a 2* in cousins and got the same type of return as self has with numerous 4-5*s.

Trae to dad: "Hey dad, if Kansas is such an advantage for me to play in the NBA, why have they never been able to have an NBA power forward as good as Blake Griffin? And since I'm a point guard, how come they've never had an NBA point guard as good as Mookie Blaylock? And if we're talking about just Lon Kruger, isn't Mitch Richmond in the NBA Hall of Fame? And if Kansas has such an NBA advantage, how come only two of their players in the history of the NBA are better than either Mitch Richmond or Blake Griffin?"

It should be noted that Selby played a few games in two NBA seasons, but that isn't good for the #1 recruit in the land obviously.

I hope the first part is true, but I think there's a couple reasons for his thoughts towards OU. 1) he is guiding Trae through this college process and the NBA process. So for Ray, he needs to find the best way to get Trae the exposure and people who can help him get there. KU and UK obviously can help that exposure Ray is wanting more than OU can. 2) from everything I've understood, including what you said at the end, Trae and his mom both really like OU. So if that's the case, it wouldn't shock me to see his dad play devils advocate in terms of trying to get him to see something different and not continue to build up OU when your mom, your friends, etc. etc. all hype up OU for you. I'm sure he hears it every day "You can be the man at OU" or "You are going to take OU back to the top of the Big 12" from his friends in Norman. So it wouldn't shock me to see his dad understand that, and try and give Trae some prospective and help him see some cons to OU instead of all the pros.

I get what you're saying and agree with most of it. Exposure is the part where you lose me. I can't think of a single player who received more exposure nationally last year than Buddy Hield. The national media and fans everywhere couldn't get enough of Buddy Love. The same goes for Blake Griffin, except it was for different reasons.

My point is that "exposure" at OU is not only possible, it may actually be better in some ways than competing for attention with five star recruits at a blue blood school like KU or UK.

Not sure how I feel about our chances after reading that article. You can really tell Trae likes OU and would probably would have already committed had his dad not taken such a strong role in his recruitment. What scares me most about our chances is his dad's constant pitch on making the right choice, play the %'s....it's a "business decision".....and then you read Trae saying "you're right".

Does that mean he picks KU...even though he would rather pick OU? Who knows. I think Ray's comments on if Kruger knows how to coach a "5 star" recruit are a reach. Buddy wasn't a 5 star out of HS...but was a 5 star by his Jr year and he couldn't have handled him and guided him any better. Kruger has also coached in the NBA...a point that never seems to get brought up for whatever reason. Self's ability to put PG's in the league is below average compared to where these kids were rated in HS. And that is undispruted.

And the crap line by Self promising him the starting PG position is BS. Don't think for a second that if Grahmn comes back..he won't be the starting PG. The Newell kid is also a 5 star combo guard who they have to consider a risk as well.

If he is good enough to make it to the NBA...he will make it at OU just as well as KU.

I guess we'll find out in 2 days. But I don't feel great about it.....hope I'm wrong.

This article kind of reads to me like the writer is trying to really build up KU. And if that's the case, I like OU's chances more. He wouldn't want to lean too hard one way if that's the side that Trae is picking.

It could be my wishful thinking, but I tend to like OU off of the article.

Trae's Dad: "Well, son, have you ever heard of JoJo White?"

That's my Devil's Advocate post for 2017. Carry on!

JoJo White is 70 years old. Trae's dad is probably too young to remember or know of him.

My vote/hope is for Trae to OU.

or osu...that would be the biggest shock right?

Why would a pg need help from surrounding players to showcase himself for the NBA?

That's the one position where you don't rely on anyone .The whole offense starts with you .

hearing its OSU, gonna surprise everyone

That's quite a jump for you. Two weeks ago you said it was KU 90%, OSU and U.K. At 5%, KU likely.

My crystal ball, which is every bit as reliable the one you use, says he'll pick OU.

I say let him go where he and his family decides. Not going to get to worked up over it if he decides KU or OSU. Be honest with yourself..where would you go that would put you in the best place to fill your dreams?
