All the posts and negative comments about Capel and his job!

I also don't post on here often, but read all the time. And am a coach as well, not of your obvious caliber only coaching middle school and all. I'm on the fence on this issue, I'm for letting him stay, but if he's cut loose, it could be for the best. What I do find odd is how these things on the boards are never about the pros and cons of hiring/firing but about who does and doesn't have the credentials to post their opinion and the ethical dilemma of anonymity on a message board and how feelings could get hurt if people post their thoughts, ignorant or in your case clearly qualified. Could we just stick to why or why not he should be fired, and not this stuff about how hard the job is and only those who coach can possibly understand why no coach should EVER be fired? I think there is legitimate, honest discussion that can take place and lead to the conclusion that he should be let go, even if the thoughts do come from inferior lay people and are anonymous.

It went from opinions about hiring/firing to personal attacks and generalizations a long time ago on this board. I have seen a ton of posts complaining about the record this year and last.....there is a point to a lot of that....but seldom does anyone here compare any IMPROVEMENTS from this year to last.......I saw a lot of people saying they would be happy and support this team as long as they competed, didn't give up, etc....that was tossed out the window almost immediately.

My point to my post was I can see the point of view from Coach Capel's shoes as far as message board posting, etc from people that really have no background or experience with the same situation.

There is plenty of room for honest, LEGITIMATE discussion but how honest and legitimate do you think most of the stuff posted on here is?

As far as I saw there was definitely some improvement in a lot of areas with this team....does everything make me happy? no...but I DON'T think Capel deserves to be fired...especially if the decision making was being made by a group who have limited knowlege of it. If Joe C makes the decision, I will support it fully....it just gets old reading the same stuff over and over....and it really gets old (as a long time fan) seeing people attack anyone who thinks Capel should be given a chance.

sorry it is so long but I have a lot to say today. All the complaining and moaning and groaning has really worn on me. My opinion won't mean much to most of you but I have as much right to voice it as you complainers who whine about Capel every single day non-stop!

I don't post on here a lot, but I read it daily. I lived through the glory days of Billy Tubbs and Sooner basketball. I followed the players like everyone else. I lived and breathed OU basketball.

I have a little different opinion about Capel, partly because I make a living as a coach. I have coached for 17 years. I coached at the college level (albeit the DIII level and not the DI level). I have lived through the positives and the negatives of good and bad seasons. I have read posts on message boards ripping me for some of the same things you guys rip him for. People can't stand our offense or can't stand our defense, who we play, whether we win or lose, who gets minutes on our team and who SHOULD get minutes....you name it I have either read it or been accused of it.

What I realize is this:

MOST of you that post on here about Capel, his job, what he should or shouldn't be doing, etc don't know ANYTHING about what you are talking about. You just want an outlet to complain and you use an anonymous message board to do it so you feel important because someone can see your opinion in print. I am not saying a lot of you never played or don't know anything about the sport....but most of you have no clue about the ins and outs of coaching on a day to day basis. Most of you are too short-sighted to realize that, in basketball particularly, one player can make a huge difference....Romero Osby may not be the best player in the country, but he could make this team a lot better....add Goff and hopefully Jurick and a good PG and this team could be a tournament team next year. They could all flop too but you cannot deny that this team played a LOT harder than last years group.....IMPROVED throughout the year and competed in most games they lost. THAT alone means Capel did a decent job this year....but you guys try to compare this team to the 30-6 group two years ago....the groups aren't even close.

Has Capel made mistakes? yes...he has....he is responsible for the team but there is no way he could have known that TMG would flake during the year and make the obvious poor decision to turn pro (and honestly, we are probably better in the long run and in the locker room), there is no way he could have predicted the Tiny and his mom would accept money from someone (had he not done that Tiny would have been back this year and this team probably would have won 3-4 more game on his talent alone....and 17 wins would have made most of you happy).

I DO blame Capel for the "put all your eggs in one basket" recruiting he was doing 2-3 years ago......he did that on a couple of guys and missed out big time on 2-3 players that would have really helped this team. I believe he learned from that and has improved in that aspect.

You know...I have lost 2 future DI players the last two years to transfers to private schools (a 6'6" 230 lb post and a 6'5" wing that hit 57 threes as a junior and transferred to a private school in October this year, right before the season started.) We started the year off 0-3 (1-2 in conference)....it took us a good 8-9 games to finally recover from losing the 6'5" wing and get our legs under us......we finished the year 18-10 (10-4 in conference and won the conference tournament championship).....I talk about this because I lived through a lot of the same crap you guys are putting Capel through on a message board this year.....and almost every one of those posts and complaints were from guys who had no clue....guys who weren't even smart enough to figure out that we IMPROVED this year even without 2 future DI kids......we were probably less talented but we improved and still competed well and won. Did we lose some games we probably should have? YES.....but we also WON some games we probably should NOT have won.

Some of you should feel lucky that you have a job in which you don't have someone who may be absolutely clueless about what you do daily who has the freedom to post all kinds of negative stuff about you (mostly unfounded) behind an anonymous board.

Try to be FANS and support your team.....not a lynch mob trying to tear it apart.

This team has improved all year. Was it completely successful from a won/loss stand point? no...but it showed some promise for the future with some young kids.

Add in 2-3 solid players and this is going to be a group you can all be proud of...one that will compete for the top half of the conference and a tourney spot. Be patient and give them another year to prove it.
This is an intelligent post. If there were some posts of similar thought and expression with the contrary view, I might be influenced to change my opinion. As yet, I really haven't seen the opposing point of view expressed unemotionally and clearly. One poster that I respect has come down firmly against Capel. But, the reasons are inadequate, perhaps a bit excessive.

Rants don't sell a position. Simply stating that someone has destroyed a program without sufficient evidence does not do it. Name-calling is a detriment and results in the ignoring of your post.

Honestly, you should read more. Dismissing those who disagree with you as shrill and emotional is the cruelest and least persuasive method of debate.

The case has been made, many times. You may disagree with it. So be it.

If Joe C makes the decision, I will support it fully....i.
I can't say that I would support that. I still resent his lack of support for Kelvin, as well as the fact that he knew for a year that the NCAA was investigating the phone calls without telling Kelvin, as, I understand, did Boren. That didn't set well with me.

What about posters embarrassing themselves by posting pictures of themselves dunking at their apartment complex?????

That falls under the category of exceptional behavior. If I could still dunk I would post my own pics. :ez-laugh:

I used to be an assistant high school coach and I too sit on the fence with Jeff C.

I can totally understand one more year or not one more day.

Remember, it is a results driven business and these cats makes tons of money to produce a good product and follow the rules. Jeff Capel has struggled at both (winning consistently) and the Gallon episode placed a program already struggling to follow the rules under the gun.

After five years, without Blake (I give Capel a lot of credit for developing his game) the team has not been close to an NCAA tournament team for various reasons.

He is ultimately responsible, yes he took over a program under fire and hit gold with Blake but I think ultimately it will prove to be fools gold in the marriage between OU and Capel.

cloud,

I definitely see the points to both sides......my point is simply that I believe he should be given one more year....if we see similar results next year I have no issues with them firing him. heck, if Joe C fires him NOW I have faith he knows what he is doing but he better be able to get someone GOOD to come in to replace him.

I'm with you Carolina, I would lean to letting him go but I can certainly see your point.

I can live with either way Joe C. goes on this but I do support the team and want them to be successful no matter who coaches them.

There have been good posts on both sides...be real.

NCS you are not going to win any argument with the internet blog know it alls who have made their mind up the Jeff should be beheaded because of two losing seasons. I have mixed feelings about him but I agree with a lot of your post and I do think this team looked improved to me. I would hate to report to some of these posters in the workplace because if things were not going the way they expected their response would not be to assess the situation in a thoughtful manner but to throw bombs and blow the place up.
