There is a rumor circulating that we are taking some steps to try to get out of Maui. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this whatsoever, or if it is simply a case of wishful thinking?

I hope we don't try and back out.
Let's play some basketball.

IMHO part of the problem with last year's team is we bit off morethan we could chewwith a very young team.We played 14 non-con games last year,SEVEN of those away from the LNC.If we had dumbed down the slate and played 10 home games maybe this team would have had a chance to gel.I'm definitely thinking loading up on cupcakes and home games is THE way to go with this reworked team.

If OU is scared of competition, that is weak.

I originally was thinking the same way...

but i'm starting to believe it might be good to front load our young un-experienced team with some teams we can beat and gain some confidence...the returners havent had a win since the Texas win at home and that was eons ago...

Sure it would be nice to go there and use it as a measuring stick to see where we are and where we need to be, but with a young team they will be very fragile and something like a weekend there without a win or a performance like Alaska last year could send them in a tailspin...

I'm more for improvement of the team (this year) than proving we arent afraid of other teams at this point, schedule some Mid Major teams that will give us a challenge and help us gain some confidence...If we are going to be a Tourney team that will work itself out in conference considering almost every team will be down from last year, plenty of wins to be had if we are indeed good enough...

getting your brains beat out in front of a national tv audience wont help this team/program any... get out of maui and schedule some patsies... get some w's and see where we shake out in the big12...

You only really have to schedule the Maui Tournament and Arizona as road games....everything else can be cupcakes at home. You can have a balance, I think it would be good to spend a week playing really good teams to show our pups what it takes to win at this level.

Nothing on Earth would have caused last year's team to "gel". Nothing.

I don't think it matters who we played last year. We lost to some really bad teams. If we're better next year we should have a better record no matter how tough the schedule is.

I think we can only play some preseason tournaments every two years? If that's the case, it would be better to defer the tournament one more year until we're better seasoned. Next year is a rebuilding year.

I can't believe some of the attitudes on this board. Do you really want to back out? Come, on. The best way to get better is to go play the best. Some of you need to forget about wins for next season. We need to worry about getting better and becoming a basketball team, two things we did not do last year.

No coach is going to duck good teams. Personally, I will lose a lot of respect for OU basketball if we back out of Maui.

A weak schedule may help this year, but will do nothing for the future. My attitude always was getting beat by a good team doesn't hurt confidence. Losing to Podunk Junction is what will kill you. Also, another opinion of an old coach, is that you will never get better than your competition.

Yup. Agree with all this.

I didn't get better at basketball by beating up on my little brother. I got better by getting my ass kicked by good players and seeing what it takes to play at that level.

The team OU has coming back would be a LONG shot to make the NCAA so why not play good teams and get better.

Plus, the kids deserve a fun trip.

Didn't we back out of Maui one year when Kelvin was here?

a majority of coaches believe that a group new to each other should be broken in with a little less treacherous of a schedule.

I don't remember that, but if we did I don't think it helped us. I just don't believe in backing down. Coach Capel wants to be the best, and playing good teams, does more for you than beating 3 cupcakes. I hated last season more than anyone, but it was because we didn't ever get better, not because of the amount of wins we had.

Also, I do believe there is something to the confidence that can be built by beating up on bad teams, but never would I back out of good competition to play those games.
