Assistant Coach's Possibilities?

Since there have been no official announcements to this point, you should take this with a grain of salt.

I was told by someone I trust that Lon will add his son, Kevin, to the staff to fill the gap left by Henson. My source also said that Coach Crutch will be promoted and that Mike Shepherd will move up to an assistant's position. I was told that Wade Mason, a dynamic recruiter and Crutchfield pal from ORU may be a candidate for a position on our staff. He was also a GA under Coach Kruger before going to ORU.

As I said, there are no links nor has there been an official announcement to confirm anything I have said, so take it as a rumor, at least for now, from a pretty good source.

Here's a link to Mason's profile on the ORU site if you're interested:

I like the idea of him bringing his son in. He'll know Lon's style and bball teachings, and from what I've read, he himself is pretty highly thought of in the bball coaching industry.

Thanks for the info Ada! So, if my math is right that's four assistants. Which one will fill Shepherd's BBall operations job if he's getting promoted? I though you could only have 3 assistants who can recruit off campus...

Good question, Stikboy, one I don't have an answer for at the moment. Maybe someone else can answer it.

I would be surprised if Lon made Kevin his top assistant replacing Henson and personally I would prefer someone with significant Texas recruiting connections, something Kevin is missing.

I would imagine Crutchfield slides into the "top assistant" role.

Aber mentioned Shepherd and Kevin Kruger. I'd like to see Lon get one "outside" guy though. Liked the earlier mention of Terry Evans. Did James Dickey stay on at OSU? How about Rayford Young? ;)

That's great if he wants to go with those guys but I sure hope they can recruit!

Yeah, me too. I said I was told Lon would add his son to the staff to fill the gap (void) left by Henson. I didn't mean Kevin would assume Henson's positon on the staff. I'm betting Crutchfield is moved to that spot.

I really expect Shep to get a spot soon if not right after they get back from Houston. I would expect it would be Kevin to slide into Shep's former role. It sounds like this Mason fellow can really recruit. It all sounds good to me. Thanks for the info, Ada.

What does Shepherd bring to the table coaching wise? Henson seemed to be a guy that was good at developing players' skills, like helping develop their shot, etc. Does Shepherd have coaching experience, and can he recruit?

Shepard was an assistant to Kruger for several years and also coached at a directional school in Illinois when Lon was with the Hawks. He certainly will be considered and he may or may not want the job. He is great as the director of operations plus it allows a whole bunch more family time because he doesn't go on the road to recruit.

It would be a shock if Kevin doesn't get one of the jobs. His biggest project was teaching Cousins how to shoot two years ago. It was his top job the year he worked at OU.

Lon isn't retiring in the near future. He loves the players in next years recruiting class.

I sure appreciate you posting good info like this. :OU-logo: :lon

I hope this isn't true. This team needs to take a step up in recruiting and these hires would not move the needle in that direction.

I'm sure you know all about crutch kevin shepp and possible mason.

Doubtful

I know everything, just ask my wife. But you are correct I am not an expert, just my sideline opinion. Is that ok?

no, because only certain people can have those, and IF you see things different, you're wrong.
