Asst Coach Search update?

If a poster wants the board to accept their expertise in giving their negative opinion about an assistant, surely they have a list of assistants they would evaluate positively. It's a simple question, not a demand.

I don't have time or the desire to research or follow assistant coaching.
But there is plentiful access to information to research a candidate for a job.

I can give an opinion on a candidate with or without having my own candidates.

Pooh’s nomadic coaching career doesn’t bother me. I think it’s reasonable to assume his experience and the contacts he made while at some of these schools could be an asset. Nine years at four different stops in Texas can’t possibly be all bad. Memphis and Miami are recruiting hotbeds. So is Wichita. He’s an Oklahoma boy and a TU grad. That should be enough to get his foot in the door with high school coaches in Oklahoma.

I like this hire. Give the guy a chance before writing him off as a failure.

i'll give him a chance but having 1 and 2 year stops in recruiting hot beds isn't going to build lasting relationships

I said what I said, but now that this is done I wish Pooh and OU the best, and also say welcome home (to Oklahoma) for Pooh.

Moving on!

Maybe not, but there is a better chance of relationship building for a coach who spent time in those locations than one who never went there at all.

This is the type of hire I expected.
Someone who isn't looking for, or expecting long term job security.

Good point. Kruger is likely gone in 2-3 years, so a guy who is comfortable leaving after that type of time frame makes a lot of sense.

Interesting. If that is indeed the case, I wonder what they're telling recruits?

Good question.
I also wonder what coaches at other schools are telling recruits about Kruger wrt his age.

Wasn't Harmon quoted as saying Kruger told him he'd be here for his entire 4 years?

I'm really not expecting Kruger to leave until at least this incoming class graduates, unless the next two years are just really bad.

I've heard no credible source suggest retirement is on the immediate horizon. Yeah, he is older than most coaches, but he isn't 80. I agree with WT on this one, I see him at least staying four more years.

Coach Kruger is 66 years old.

He will be 67 before the season starts so if he finished out three seasons he would be 70 before season 4 starts. Now that being said, age is just a number. I don't think he will, but no one thought Stoops would retire the way he did at 55 either. It won't surprise me if one April or May coming he just decides he's done, even though i don't expect it.

Didn't he say in an interview a couple of years ago that he would retire when coaching seriously interfered with his ability to participate in and watch his grandkids extracurricular activities? As a grandparent, I can completely understand this!

I recall something like that, but I don't know how old his grand kids are.

Pooh's slight hold up was... If LK retires after this year, ill be looking again next year...

I was told this means LK will be here several more.

Obviously pending good health etc...

He has 2 years left on his contract. If the on court results don't improve over the last 3 seasons, he shouldn't get an extension.
I'm hopeful with the current talent on the team that Kruger can right the ship. But if he cant, combined with the age factor, we should have a new coach in 2021.

Doesn’t matter what SHOULD happen or what any fans think. All he has to do is make the tourney and Joe C will never fire him. He’ll be here as long as he wants to be. That’s where this program is right now. Making the tourney is The goal. Nothing more is expected of OU basketball.
