Asst Coach Search update?

If someone applies to my company has had 12 jobs that are essentially the same position, I wouldn't hire him. The only reason you consider him is because of AAU connections or something. his value as a coach is clearly minimal.

I'd be happy to see abd's list, too. Perhaps there are some juco coaches abd could submit as candidates? Or perhaps he'd prefer to cite them later as sure bets we foolishly passed on.

I'd hire Steve Eck from Hutchinson CC... 83% winning percentage as a head coach... Before his run at Hutchinson, he coached at Redlands (including Taj Gray) and was 182-22 there as a head coach. He has 582 junior college wins and is from the area.

He would give us unbelievable knowledge in the local juco circuit plus a guy who really knows how to coach basketball and develop talent.

That's a joke right? Dude is Kruger's age. Never coached div 1. You think there might be a reason?

I don’t agree with that. I think Jim Molinari has a pretty solid resume’ including 20 years as a head coach. The only knock on him is his age. Henson, Hill, and Crutchfield were solid. Carlin Hartman was the associate head coach at Rice before coming to OU. His bio says he was the lead recruiter for Jamal Bienemy, Austin Reaves, Kur Kuath, Victor Iwuakor, and Anyang Garang.

I don’t think Pooh is light years ahead of those guys.

I never said he was lightyears better than every assistant Lon has hired. I said his resume is lightyears ahead of the average Lon hire. His resume is about what Crutch, Hartman, and KK combined for at the time of their hires.

I think many college coaches would tell you that its likely some of the best basketball coaches in the business could be found anywhere... High schools, prep schools, overseas, colleges, etc.

Maybe in the area of basic skills and player development. Maybe.

But there are other things demanded of a D1 assistant that those coaches would NOT have experience in. They would be learning on the job at best.

And this board would be in meltdown mode if Coach Kruger were to hire a coach from a community college. Absolute meltdown.

But these days, the board's basically in meltdown mode most of the time.

I'm eager to see the list of candidates you'd be happy to see hired; I trust you're working on compiling that now.

Dude, my list is LITERALLY anybody that still has upside. Somebody that might bring something new. Somebody with a higher ceiling, at least possibly, then the same old retreads that just move from school to school.

The biggest problem I see is that the other two coaches we have on staff aren't very varied in their strengths either, so you need something pretty specific from this third coach (recruiting prowess most notably). You can't take a chance, b/c the other two assistants don't bring enough to the table, so we almost have to hire somebody where we know exactly what we are getting. Which is fully what I expect to do.

I'd prefer a younger-ish coach that is either a head coach at a lower level or even JUCO, or an assistant at a school where being an assistant at OU would be a jump. Somebody that gives us a chance to catch lightening in a bottle. Not somebody who has been the exact same coach for the last decade or two (or three).

What’s taking so long with the official announcement??

Word is they’re checking to make sure two of our members approve of this hire before closing the deal. I promised I wouldn’t reveal their identities. ;)

If I had the kind of pull that they'd ask for my approval, I'd just go ahead and coach the team myself. :D

Question.... is Molinari and Kevin K before he left restricted earnings coaches or were they full time

I think it is perfectly fine for fans to question a coach that hasn't stuck around anywhere for very long.

I don't know enough to know if he is a good get but that does concern me.

And just because a fan doesn't like a hire, doesn't mean he has to come up with candidates of his own.

How many times has Coach told us its a done deal and would be announced any time?

If a poster wants the board to accept their expertise in giving their negative opinion about an assistant, surely they have a list of assistants they would evaluate positively. It's a simple question, not a demand.

Questioning is one thing; pronouncing a coach unsuitable or even shady is quite another. And if you're going to state that someone is a bad hire, be prepared for others to ask who you'd have liked to have seen hired instead.

You don't see any red flags with Pooh?

Agreed. I also think it’s fair to ask for examples or proof, especially if the coach’s character may be flawed.
