Bad Loss Reactions

when you suffer a truly bad blowout loss to a team that is not clearly
superior in talent, it's easy to fly off the handle with over reaction.
I'm as guilty as anyone.
Sherri didn't become a bad coach in one day/one game.
However, you have to really ask yourself after bad games like this.
Was this loss due a lack of effort or a sign of lack of talent?

Obviously, ou was completely flat today. We can guess the reasons. Regardless, sherri did not have her team ready to play. Coaching a group of teenagers basically this will happen. (see ou v ut in football).
Sherri needs to shake things up big time. It's time to bench little/manning
and do something different.

The more distressing conclusion appears to be forming. This team is not very talented. There are a lot of similar pieces that don't combine well.
Lots of the same kind of players. We have no athletes who can create their own shot and finish. None.
Maybe carter who probably should be redshirting due to injuries.
But to be honest, injuries are no excuse everyone has injuries.

This is a poorly built and recruited roster there's my knee jerk reaction.

While I don't think Sherri should move on, I do think it's time she replace some of her coaches... It's time to shake things up... But it'll be hard for her to part ways with Jan.

She will never part ways with Jan.

Most seem to agree that we have to have better players. Period. While I also agree we badly need a couple of assistants who are excellent recruiters, there is another part to the problem. When the assistants start building relationships (some to the point the players want to come to OU) Sherri has got to stop saying "no, we are not taking that player". I know for a fact that has happened several times. Your next question is probably, why. Because Sherri wants girls who are first class citizens, good students, and will not likely ever cause a moments trouble. They are graded, by her, to make sure they conform to her strict standards.

There is nothing wrong with wanting those type kids, IF they are also the best of the best on the court. Herein lies the problem. Our girls will match up with any off the court in grades, community service, etc but not on the court. Sherri's selection process agrees with some on this board. Others will say, if she wouldn't take players like a Buddy Hield or Ryan Spangler, she needs to change her requirements. When I look at teams who are normally ranked in the top 5-10 in the country, I don't see many who regularly have to suspend players. It just seldom happens. Yet, we didn't recruit many of those players.

I think Sherri needs to identify the best players, see if there is anything in their background that would raise a LEGITIMATE red flag, and make the best decision possible. But, waiting late in the recruiting process then pulling the rug out from under the recruits, as well as assistant coaches, is a terrible practice. Ask the coaches at DFW Elite.

I heard a rumor that Courtney Williams (Texas A&M) liked OU and Sherri said no, I can only think of her tattoos as being the reason? Williams would have sure helped us out...

It's been said by many on this board for several of our recent teams, but this team needs an Amanda Thompson, a Leah Rush … a "tough-minded, junkyard dog, you are not going to beat me" player.
oSu's Martin was the best player on the floor and if she had to, she could've taken over that game not only with skill, but with her disposition and leadership. I'm not sure we have that player who can step up, welcome that, and thrive once a game gets to that level of competitiveness.
Hopefully, some of the new kids can bring that … it's tough to win at the highest of levels without it.

I don't know that it's appropriate to mention Buddy and Ryan as examples of someone sherri would not take, neither one has ever been a behavior issue as far as I know.
Sherri's teams have ALWAYS even in the CP3 era had a huge turnover problem, even recognizing that turnovers are much more of an issue in women's bball in general. There is obviously a coaching issue there
Our talent level has slipped badly. They are no doubt model citizens but the girls we have playing especially at guard now are not going to carry us into a championship type team, they just aren't good enough. Sadly the athleticism and size of the upper tier girls has gone up dramatically and we haven't kept up in recruiting them to OU

OU went into this game ranked #14.
Must have been doing something right.

This week, ten of the top twenty-five teams in the nation lost, most on the road, and most to unranked teams.

Before condemning turnovers once again, examine the turnovers in each game this year. Yesterday was unusual for this team.

The one thing that stands out is that we have shot 27% from three in conference play.

I understand the point of your post but don't understand the bolded statement. Buddy and Ryan are great in the classroom and off the court...

Sherri is very concerned with perception. If there were two high school girls with their look, there's not a snowball's chance she would offer them. I'm sure that some here agree we should exclude those players. I definitely do not.

I guess I can understand a coach being wary of recruiting someone with large tribal tattoos like Spangler, but your point re: Buddy is completely lost on me. He is one of the kindest, happiest, and most hard working players to ever come through the program. What "look" are you referring to?

Are you referring to Ryan's tattoo? What are talking about with Buddy? Buddy literally has a Twitter post near daily that says:

"Thank God For Life, Health and Strength 🙏💪✊💯"

Not trying to speak for Coach Coale but I bet she would take both of those kids in a heartbeat. Tommy Mason Griffin? Probably not so much.

Lon is actually just as big on Character, Academic and community service kids as Coach Coale.

I see your point of the post but think you chose a bad example...

If you want to insert other names as examples, no problem.

I think the real issue is that there are so few actual real difference makers in women's hoops legitimately maybe 10 to 12 a year.
You have to get those difference makers to get to a Final Four.
Limiting your recruiting scope (if that is really happening) is a recipe for disaster.

You are wrong on the example you gave and won't explain what you meant but no problem.

I agree. Norm just made a totally erroneous assumption about Coach Coale, and then used totally erroneous examples to back that assumption up.

I stand by my examples but, the names I threw out are not the point. The point is, Sherri has in mind what type of players she's willing to accept and perception plays heavily into that equation.

What "look" does or did Buddy Hield have that would have made Coach Coale say "no" to signing him. Answer the question or quit talking out of your rear end...

I can only postulate that in Ryan Spangler's case that you are referring to his tattoo that is a tribute to his deceased grandfather. I would argue you are wrong on that one as well as in the men's basketball realm, it is becoming more and more rare to find a guy who does NOT have a tattoo. If Coach Coale were recruiting guys at a school like OU, I doubt that would be an exclusionary criteria and boy does Ryan Spangler sure embody everything that she appears to like in a student athlete now and when he was at Bridgecreek HS.

Without some proof, this is slander.

As I said, I like both guys and not only are they great players, they also are great representatives of OU. If I used a bad example in adding Buddy, scratch him. People are getting hung up on a name they disagree with which isn't the point.

Let's go with Spangler. Tell me one player Sherri has ever signed that displayed several tats like Spangler. I think Ny got a tat after she came but nothing like Spangler's If I'm wrong about Sherri, give me one example.
