Big 12 Coach of the Year

Doc Sadler, Tad Boyle, Bill Self and Rick Barnes all major players in the hunt as well.
Personally, I think if Texas wins the conference (and they probably will with the easy schedule the rest of the way) that Barnes will get it.

I think you have it nailed Cheno. Capel is on the list with those guys. Maybe even Pat Knight if Tech continues to surge. But of all those guys Capel had the deck stacked against him the most.

Zero chance Capel wins this award. In the history of the Big XII only once has the award gone to a coach who finished below 2nd in the regular season and that was Gillespie after he took over an 0-16 Melvin Watkins team and won 8 games.

Coaching is a 12 months a year job and when it comes to winning awards you don't get much credit for overcoming adversity that you participated in creating (high player turnover/poor recruiting).

If Texas wins the conference at 15-1 or 16-0, Barnes as COY is an absolute lock regardless of what anyone else does.

I would have to agree with this, too. Texas' team was a big disappointment last year, too. So Barnes had to rebuild quickly.

Now that I just said something non-negative about a Longhorn coach, I will go wash my mouth out with whiskey.

I think we would have to achieve a winning record in the conference for Jeff to win and that's a really tall order. But I probably wouldn't vote for Barnes, either. I generally think a coach of the year should have to overcome a lot of adversity and/or achieve a much better record than anyone thought they would. Unless things change over the next few weeks, Barnes doesn't fit that description.

Yes. I have been saying for years OU basketball fans need to lower their expectations.

It's not that my expectations need to be lowered, it the fact that it is refreshing to see improvement over the season. Last year, we came into the season on a high note and left severely disappointed. This year, some posters here were predicting 0-16 in conference play, and the team has won three straight. I still feel Oklahoma basketball should never be satisfied with 12-14 wins.

Texas was picked #3 in the conference. Texas barely snuck in and lost 1st round in the dance last year. Texas starts two freshmen and two sophomores. Texas will probably be ranked in the top 5 later today.
All that is waaaay more than expected. Rick Barnes is a national COY candidate right now. Maybe the leader.
I don't like the guy either but fair is fair.

Sorry to break it to you, but Barnes is the leader for NCOY award at this point. It's not like they were a Final Four contender to start the year.

- Starts two freshmen.
- Has his team ranked in the top 5 in defensive efficiency.
- Broke KU's 69 game home win streak.
- Eary exit from the tourney last year losing and lost some high profile, experienced players.

Great, so if we beat Texas in Norman and finish 9-7 there appears to be no valid argument why Capel would not be coach of the year.

It's a tall order and the next step would be a win over Baylor.

Not sure I agree with that.

"Pat, I'm telling you, is an excellent coach. I'm talking about from when you look at the technical part of the game how hard they do things. Then, I also know how hard they work and I know how hard he works at it. I really believe they're going to be fine. They're going to get better, his teams always have.

There's so much that goes into being a good team or a good program. And I know this, there's not another program in the country that does it more right than they do. I mean, he's never going to violate an NCAA rule, he's going to represent Texas Tech they way it's supposed to be represented."

Saw this today, it's from Rick Barnes praising Pat Knight...funniest thing I've read in a while.

I like Barnes. I just have different criteria for what COY means than the people that vote on it do. For instance, I think the job Bob Stoops did in 2009 (The Year of the Injuries) to get us to a bowl game and win the bowl game is much more impressive than anything the guy that won the award did.

Doc Sadler is 15-5, 3-3, and just beat #13 A&M at Nebraska... They lost to at Tech by 1, at Kansas by 3, and at Mizzou by 8.

Doc Sadler and Rick Barnes are the leaders for coach of the year right now.

It should be noted that Sadler's NU team has played one of the easiest schedules in America. According to the RPI, NU has played the 143rd toughest schedule. And according to Sagarin, NU has played the 281st toughest schedule. And 254th according to Kenpom.

Since this is an OU board, for comparison...

OU's SOS

RPI= 95th
Sagarin= 143rd
Kenpom= 115th

Definitely not a tough schedule but that is significantly tougher than NU's.

As for my COY at this point....it is Rick Barnes.

OU will beat Nebraska in Norman just like they did Colorado and eliminate Sadler. Will be very surprising if Nebraska finishes ahead of OU's final conference record.

I understand but Barnes is doing it. He wasn't picked to win the league.
Texas was arguably the 5th best team going into the season behind KSU, KU, Baylor & Mizzou.

Agree with Cheno, Texas relies on younger players and I fully expected to be middle of the pack in the big 12 and struggle ala last year. Instead they have become a Final Four type team, Barnes is doing some good work down there. I still fully expect them to bow out too early in the tournament though;).
