Bill Self at Jeff Capels age ...

Where is the talent to get OU a winning conference record?
I'm a little more worried about the coaching staff. We basically have a coach that was a video coordinator not to long ago. If Jeff can't get coaches with actual coaching experience at a fairly high level we'll have the same problems next year as we had this year.

If you look at recruiting classes rankings I bet we are right there with most of the teams in the conference. Not as good Baylor, Texas, Kansas, maybe A&M and maybe Missouri, but right there with pretty much everyone else under Capel. We just haven't lost a bunch of his recruits, and we have a very inexperienced coaching staff. Basically this situation Jeff Capel has built is a real tough one to get out of right now. I think we need to see coaching staff changes no matter what.

Nick, the reason I look at age is because you can only soak up so much knowledge a year in your life. Self was an assistant at Kansas and Oklahoma State for 8 years before getting the ORU gig. Capel was an assistant for 1 year at Old Dominion and 1 year at VCU before getting his first gig.

At 36 years old Self had 2 more years of experience. So at the same age Capel has been more successful, through 9 years as a head coach the edge goes to Self. The next 3 years will tell us all we need to know about Capel.

Before Capel was hired, if someone told you OU would make the ncaa two out five years under Capel...would you be happy?

Had just ended his first season at Tulsa. Had never been to the NCAA tournament. Had 1 NIT first round loss on his resume. Overall record of 74-66.

Capel has taken VCU and OU to the NCAA tournament 3 times. Has an elite 8 on his resume. Has coached a team USA U18 team to a championship. Overall record 163-93.

A smart person will analyze as much data as they can gather. Other people will cherry pick data to fit their argument. Of course smart people are right far more often.

To compare Jeff Capel to Bill Self would be like to compare John Blake to Bob Stoops. There is no comparison. Also, Capel is old enough to be better. He has nearly destroyed our program.

If I thought for 1 minute that Jeff was in the same class with Self, I would be all in for keeping him.

I watched ORU and TU play plenty of times when Self was there. They ran great systems and played good defense. I can't say that about Jeff's teams.

After both had coached 9 years, Self could was in demand for plenty of HC gigs. How many teams are coming after Jeff?

Self hasn't missed the tourney since his 5th year of being a HC and all we have to do this march is watch other teams on TV.

+1

You're right. Capel was a MUCH better college player than Bill Self.

The Big 12 thanks you in advance for giving Capel three more years.

LOL @ this. Missouri is 8-8 in the weak conference while OU signed a bunch of guys in the middle of the night are was a whisker from 7-9.

Missouri is the most pathetic athletic program in all sports in the nation. Seriously there is not a BCS program that has done less. They suck at everything.

Agreed, unfortunately you don't understand what side of this equation you are on. You blatantly cherry picked your data by purposely using an arbitrary filter (age) as opposed to a legitimate filter (experience).

Bill Self

ORU
  • Inherited a 5 win ORU team and turned it into a perennial winner, along the way he led the Golden Eagles to their first postseason appearance in 15 years.
  • Self led ORU to the NIT, Capel can't even do that at OU.
Tulsa
  • Next he went to Tulsa where he led the Golden Hurricane to its only Elite Eight appearance
  • Most wins in a season
  • Highest career winning % in school history.
Illinois
  • Inherited a 22 win team
  • Never won less than 25 games
  • Has the highest career winning % in school history.
Kansas
  • At Kansas he has the highest career winning % in KU's storied history.
  • Every Bill Self coached team has finished 1st or 2nd in its conference with only one exception, his first season at Tulsa (3rd place).

I won't even bother with all of Self's other accolades.

Jeff Capel

VCU
  • Inherited a 21 win VCU program.
  • In his 4yrs at VCU only had one 20 win season
  • Coached the 3 worst VCU teams in the last 10 seasons (spanning 4 different coaches).
  • Anthony Grant took over Capel's 19-10 squad and won 28 games the next season.
  • Anthony Grant never won less than 24 games at VCU (Capel's highest win total was 23).
  • Capel has the 6th highest win % in VCU history.

Oklahoma
  • At OU Capel has the 6th highest career win% in school history.
  • Inherited a 20 win team
  • program that had been to the postseason every season since 1982
  • Streak came to an end in his first season.
  • Has missed postseason in 3 out of 5 seasons.
  • Coached the 3 worst Sooner teams in the last 30 years.
  • Has amassed a 9-32 (.220) record vs the AP Top 25.
  • With only 2 wins vs Top 10 Teams. Defeated #9 Texas (2010) & #10 Purdue (2009)
  • Led the Sooners to 2 NCAA tournaments (2nd Round & Elite 8)
  • Has coached 4 NBA draft picks

I could go on all day but I think the point has been made.

As negative as this may seem I have never called for Capel to be fired and I am completely 50/50 on the issue.

Hard to argue with this. Did you know their win in 2009 is the ONLY Big 12 title Missouri has won in ANY men's sport?

That's pitiful.

Age is arbitrary? At 36 years old Jeff Capel has been a college basketball coach for 11 years. At 36 years old Bill Self had been a college basketball coach for 13 years.

You may be statgeek, but I'm statpro and have the audited algorithms to prove it. Quantitative modeling for investment management is what I do.

We know. You brag every chance you get.

What matters in this discussion is how long they'd been a head coach, but then you know that. You're just trolling or spinning or both.

Me, I'm still waiting for you to admit you were wrong about Cade Davis. I'd respect you more for that than for your truly amazing career and oh-so-successful business.

So you're an insurance salesman pimping credit life and variable annuities. lol A quant. Interesting but not surprising. Would you like to explain the fat-finger theory? Are the algorithms patented under your name? You of all people should realize the odds of Jeff qualifying for MM next year are stacked against him.

Not that I don't enjoy all boca threads, but this thread is hysterical.
