Both Capel and Self have 2 losing seasons in the first 9.

Don't know on Self's player attrition in his first 9. Probably no problem at Illinois because he took over a well oiled machine. Capel has been scrambling since day 1 at OU so the attrition is to be expected.

Let's face it. We all thought when we had WW, TMG and Tiny coming in after Blake that Capel has this puppy on autopilot. Some unfortunate things happened that got him scrambling again. But we are in good shape for next season which could turn into great shape with a couple more additions.

It did affect OU. And Capel righted the ship. That is why we were all happy with him for the first three years. He gets credit for that. But then he crashed it, and it is on him 100%. Blaming our current set of circumstances on Kelvin Sampson is just wrong.

I'm not positive on this, but I'm pretty sure IU got stiffer sanctions than OU.

Also, if you check the recruiting rankings, Crean is bringing in PLENTY of talent to win 20 games. At this point, if he isn't, that is on him.

What I find frustrating is that Kelvin LEFT for ANOTHER JOB! He wasn't run out or otherwise, what he would or would not have done the last five years at OU is irrelevant, its not like he got fired and Capel was his chosen replacement. We had sanctions under Kelvin, might get them under Jeff. But I loved Kelvin and his time here, obviously more on the fence about Capel, but that five years later Kelvin (who LEFT) keeps being brought up is baffling to me on all levels.

Bill Self coached at ORU and Tulsa for 7 years before taking over the loaded program at Illinois Lon Kruger left him.

Even though Capel took over a team on probation without a single all conference caliber player on the roster, and is 3 years younger through his 9th season as a head coach ...

both Self and Capel through 9 seasons have been to the NCAA tournament 3 times and the NIT once.

Self took over a very bad ORU program. By his fourth and final season he won 21 games. He took Tulsa to a 32 - 5 season. He did a great job at Illinois. He did get a good team but he left an even better team. Self has .745 winning percentage and that may not include this season but definitely includes a six win season his first year at ORU. To argue that some people pick and choose stats and then compare post season play of Self and Capel is a joke. I don't like KU but the fact of the matter is that Bill Self is by far the best young coach in college basketball (under 50).

NASA reports that the ice caps on Mars are also shrinking. Of course given your superior knowledge you probably didn't. Know Mars has polar ice caps because you are so busy gathering as much knowledge as possible and misinterpreting it that you fail to properly consider some extremely relevant information that does not fit your conclusion. FYI the ice caps on Mars are not water.

As negative as this may seem I have never called for Capel to be fired and I am completely 50/50 on the issue.

As for your quantitative modeling; anyone with knowledge of the inner workings of established investments firms knows that at best your a dog on a leash; given little, if any room to actually be innovative. So really you are just a castrated plug & chugger; attempting to split hairs between traditional asset allocation & tactical asset allocation, while scanning the landscape for some new negatively correlated investments. Nick, the reason I look at age is because you can only soak up so much knowledge a year in your life. Self was an assistant at Kansas and Oklahoma State for 8 years before getting the ORU gig. Capel was an assistant for 1 year at Old Dominion and 1 year at VCU before getting his first gig.

At 36 years old Self had 2 more years of experience. So at the same age Capel has been more successful, through 9 years as a head coach the edge goes to Self. The next 3 years will tell us all we need to know about Capel.

With that kind of turnover, you are not going to win and you will find yourself recruiting in desperation which is why we have a team that fit better in the Southland Conference.

As for Assistant Coaches, I promise you that Self has never had to hire his video guy as an assistant nor was his staff only experience in low level conferences. That is the case with Capel's current staff. As I recollect, Billy Gillespie was on Self's staff at Tulsa and Illinois.

Had just ended his first season at Tulsa. Had never been to the NCAA tournament. Had 1 NIT first round loss on his resume. Overall record of 74-66.

Capel has taken VCU and OU to the NCAA tournament 3 times. Has an elite 8 on his resume. Has coached a team USA U18 team to a championship. Overall record 163-93.

A smart person will analyze as much data as they can gather. Other people will cherry pick data to fit their argument. Of course smart people are right far more often.

Awesome, so when Kansas fires Self, we can hire him!
