Buzz 10-year deal from MU

Are the buy-outs often tied to years remaining on a contract? What I mean is, if Capel was fired next year instead of this year, would our buy-out have been less?

I read somewhere before Capel was fired that if we waited and fired him after next season, the buyout wasn't much less if any than what we paid this year.

Re: MU offering 10-year deal to Buzz

Exactly.

BTW, Buzz is not worth a 10-year deal.

I agree. As much as I would like him here, that's a deal-breaker. I think the most Joe C. should go is 6-7.

We are always going to lose coaches to big schools that are top tier ones.

How many coaches has OU lost to these "top tier" schools? Sampson went to Indiana, but it had as much to do with him being in hot water with the NCAA as anything else.

I just love these "always poor us" comments. In the entire history of Sooner basketball only two coaches left for a "better" job. John MacLeod went to the NBA. Kelvin went to Indiana (we will never know if he was under pressure here). So where does the stepping stone paranoia come from? And it isn't just basketball. Stoops has been about to take another job for the last 12 years.

For some reason Buzz is really interested in the OU job. It could be that in the middle of the season when the "Fire Buzz" signs were in the arena, he did not get a lot of warm fuzzy reassurances from Marquette's AD.

It is like the girl who hears rumor her boyfriend is going to break up with her and the boyfriend is silent. Then the quarterback asks her to the prom. All of the sudden the boyfriend treats her like a queen. Usually, that just doesn't work.

You bring up a point that has not received much attention in our discussions. I'm sure Buzz's connnections in this area and growing up not far away has something to do with his interest in coaching at OU. But if Marquette fans brazenly flashed "Fire Buzz" signs in the arena this season, he is smart enough to know that winning a couple of games in the NCAA tourney will not prevent them from doing it again.

If I was in his shoes, I would get out of that place while I had the chance and never look back.

Re: MU offering 10-year deal to Buzz

Job security means very little in this business. As we have seen with Jeff Capel. Nobody would have seen thsi coming with Capel a year and a half ago.

Exactly. Really, a 10 year contract (if that is even a reality - something tells me that the Wisconsin press isn't much more in the loop than the Oklahoma press. That and Twitter is about as reliable as the National Enquirer) is there to protect the school, not the coach. Unless he works some total job on the school and makes his severance package ridiculous, this is protection for Marquette from Buzz being pursued every year and inflating his contract in keeping with the market.

I agree, if you love Wisconsin and you love Marquette enough to spend the better part of your career there, then a 10 yr deal is a nice gesture, but absolutely NO guarantee that "Fire Buzz" signs aren't out by the middle of conference season next year and you're on your can with a bit fatter wallet only two years into that contract. On the other hand, if you appreciate Marquette and would be fine staying there awhile but really prefer to spend more of your years in another part of the country, 10 yrs is nice but not going to make up your mind.

Obviously just my take. Maybe I should tweet it and it would then become "fact"... :)

Re: MU offering 10-year deal to Buzz

10 years is job security rarely seen in this business. He has recruits and a team in place. He would have to want this job in order to leave that on the table.

10 year contract does not equal 10 years of job security, by any stretch. It might mean you get a bigger buyout if you get fired early, but if you lose enough games, you will be fired regardless of what the length of the contract is.
