Can Jeff Capel win without Blake Griffin? >>> The Oklahoman

I love these titles
Wonder if they are coming over here for story ideas

Good to finally find out how much the buyout is, OU needs to raise $2 million and buy Capel out.

Yeppie... Another FIRE capel thread has started....! Lets go hire Roy williams away from UNC, he has okla ties! He coached KU, which played in Okla...!

(not directed to OUHoops) Just he posters that will take over every thread for the next 12 months

2 million buyout sounds better than the 4.5 million somebody reported yesterday.

Osby will help. But as one OU insider put it, “It's not like Osby is Scottie Pippen.”

Is there a connection to Scottie Pippen I'm not aware of or is this comparison as random as it seemed when I read it?

Somebody on this message board made the same comparison last week. I will see if I can find it.

The good thing about this, is that I think Joe C has to move quickly either way. We cannot afford to have Capel as a lame duck for another month after we lose. Either say he is staying, or cut him loose.

Exactly...either way...it needs to happen fast. There are guys we are recruiting that need to know.

I don't think that we have a bunch of mid-major talent. I think we just have guys that are young that will mature and develop as players(maybe 1 or 2 mid-majors). As for Goff, he is needed. We don't exactly need his offense...but we do need rebounding and defense. Thats also why they are recruiting Jurick b/c they know that Goff isn't Taj Gray out of juco.

As for Osby...I don't quite understand where there going with the comparison of Pippen...but whatever. That quote can be broken down several ways. All I know is...I watch this kid on the sideline cheering and supporting this team and I like that. He will be a great addition to OU whether he's Scottie Pippen, luol Deng, or that Middleton kid at aTm.

Lasts years recruiting class was horrible. He went after big names but struck out. He had a couple of back to back solid recruiting classes but last years was taking 10 steps back. This year isn't any different. He has a chance to land a couple of players that could possibly make a decent class but we won't know for awhile.

I think the article is right, we look like Virginia Commonwealth. Our coaching staff (Assistants) look like they are from the Southland Conference or worse, that has a lot to do with it. No Assistant would take the job.

When our best asst left last year to be an asst at Marshall I knew OU was in trouble

I'm for giving Capel another year. Given the talent, I thought he did a decent job this year. Of course, I do blame him for the talent level. But, he is young and this is his first big program job and he is going to have to grow and learn like all of us. I think he has learned from his mistakes and is a good man and quality coach. So, while I'm not for giving him forever, I think another year is fair.

I know many disagree, but I think he has done a decent job every year but last year. He inherited nothing and lost all of his recruits with no time to sign any prior to his first year. He had a winning record. He took us to the NCAA twice, including an elite 8 where we were beat by the national champion. Then last year was a disaster. He did what he could to start over, and a losing record occurred this year. I expected it. However, I like what I see in Clark, Newell and Neal. I like the development I saw this year from Pledger and Fitz (from last year) and I liked the development through the year from Blair and CJ.

I don't have a problem with people that disagree with this position and can certainly understand their pain, but I say another year and two more signing classes is fair (at least in my opinion).

The numbers in 3 out of 5 years without Blake make it impossible to suggest that he can win without Blake... There is absolutely no evidence supporting that theory, so much so, that it isnt even debatable.

$2 mill? That changes a lot.

I agree with you. Now that we finally know the actual #. This isnt that much. Although I sitll dont think he will be fired, It makes my opinion swing a bit towards him being let go more than I previously thought...interesting

As long as posters keep saying it, I'll keep refuting it: Austin Johnson, Longar Longar, Taylor Griffin, Michael Neal, David Godbold, Nate Carter, Tony Crocker, Keith Clark, Bobby Maze.

Capel inherited (or, in a couple of cases, recruited) far more talent on that 2007 squad that he had this year in his fifth season at the helm. And yet over and over, he's given a pass on that season (and yes, over and over, I keep saying he shouldn't be given that pass -- Hi, Klegg!)

Kelvin Sampson would have taken the 2007 squad (not even including the recruits who bailed) to the NIT, minimum, and quite possibly the NCAA tourney.

And those lost recruits? One can argue whether or not he should have been able to keep them committed, but even if one excuses their departure, they wouldn't made a huge difference that season. Well, maybe the PG, but AJ wasn't the reason we were basically .500 that year.

I can buy the rest, but this ridiculous. Scotty Reynolds, Damion James and Jeremy Mayfield would have made a huge difference in 2006. I can guarantee we wouldn't have finished one game over .500, and even more importantly, what would it have meant for the following seasons?

James and Reynolds had prodigious college careers, how good would we have been for the rest of their careers?
