Do you tell your kids that they can't use metaphors or hyperbole because they are lies?.
I guess I need to go have a talk with the principal that this lying won't be acceptable for my children
That's actually a good exercise.
If your kid occasionally says something like "man I had to read like 10,000 pages to study for this test".... Ok, we get it. You had to read a lot. Not LITERALLY 10,000 pages, but you had to put a lot of work in.
But what if your kid wakes up in the morning on September 9th and says,
"Man I used like 10,000 pounds of toothpaste to brush my teeth this morning"...
Then says, "man, i put about 300 gallons of milk on my cereal"...
Then says, "my classroom is a total disaster... the teacher has never returned our homework to us... It never happens"
Then says, "I had lunch today and it costs like a million dollars for a taco salad"....
Then says, "in PE I probably made 200 free throws in a row"...
Then says, "The other guys in my PE class have never even made a free throw"
Then says, "I couldn't even take a dump at school because I have to flush the toilet 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10... 15 times!!!!"
Then says, "It took my like all day to get home from school"
Then says, "you know what dad, I am sick of mom making meatloaf for dinner every single night"....
All in the same day.... Yea, as a parent I am correcting that behavior. Trump didn't, and that's how you get Don Jr. But me, yes, I am correcting that behavior. Most things out of your mouth can't be hyperbole. A majority of pertinent information can't be hyperbole. Half of what you say shouldn't be hyperbole... A quarter of what you say shouldn't be hyperbole. Official information from the POTUS shouldn't be hyperbole. 10% of what you say shouldn't be hyperbole. Now, the situation with Trump is even more ridiculous because he is POTUS. People, markets, world leaders, business leaders, states, other elected officials, etc rely on him to provide clear and accurate information. He just doesn't do that. Would anyone claim he does? Does anyone claim he shouldn't? Of course not.
Now, if we are talking about intent... Hyperbole is absolutely deception, and akin to a lie, when it's intent is to make a situation sound worse than it is, especially when the alternative is in your favor. "The entire city of Portland is on fire because of Democrats" or whatever he said.... You may not think this way, but there are lots of people out there who hear that and take it literally. Lots of them. It's misinformation.
