Denzel Valentine is The AP Player of the Year

Denzel was responsible for about 33 points per game minimum, combing PPG and APG. Plus 7.5 rebounds. He is also a ridiculous 3pt shooter.

Buddy was responsible for about 29 points per game minimum, combining PPG and APG. Plus 5.7 rebounds. Ridiculous 3pt shooter.

This doesnt seem off to me. Denzel contributed more than Buddy. What's the problem here?

The point is you were perfectly willing to dismiss certain statistics when they didn't fit your argument because of the way certain players were used. Now you point to statistics like assists despite the fact Kruger doesn't really ask Buddy to trigger the offense in a way that would lead to assists. You surely see that point, right?

Buddy also didn't win a big 12 title or tournament title and Valentine won the big 10 tournament title.

L.O.L

The ole just add up assists and points trick.

More to it than that bud

So guards will pretty much always be winning the award because "points responsible for" as posts will never be able to amass enough assists..

Hield played harder schedule, had more memorable moments, had better stats (points rules all), while shooting better and his team DIDN'T choke to a 15 seed and is in the final 4.. totally makes sense to give it to valentine

And guess who had the exact same amount of teams in the sweet 16. And guess who beat KU and who didn't?

So now a win in November outranks an all-time embarrassment of a loss in the NCAA tourney?

The rules keep changing. Usually "OU fans" who make a practice of downgrading the Sooners and touting other teams rely on March results to make their arguments. bgrch, ever the trailblazer, is breaking new ground in touting an MSU win in the second game of the season.

And oh, how many teams did the B10 have in the Elite Eight? None. And are you aware that one of the B10 teams in the Sweet 16 lost to KU by considerably more than they lost to MSU in the B10 tourney?

I'm not arguing buddy didn't deserve to win it. I'm saying...Valentine, did enough to win it during the regular season. Had Buddy won it, I would not be arguing that Valentine deserved it.

again, the vote was taken before the tournament so obviously what the players have done in the tourney can't count.

Obviously, Hields 6pts in the WV game cost him.

And guess who beat Wisconsin and who didn't? :facepalm

Michigan State lost to Wisconsin and OU routed Wisconsin...Just so you know...That blew up your point.

While Valentine is very good and had good numbers I never really thought he should have been that close to Hield in any POY contests like some were saying. The CBS bball guy comes to mind as one who was picking Valentine over Hield. However, I don't have any big issues with the AP vote because it is immaterial to the team and, if anything, might provide more motivation.

It's just a part of any opinion process - everybody either has one or makes one up. I'm glad the team part is settled on the court. I have to think that a lot of the AP voters just didn't have enough respect for OU as a team at the time.

Michigan beat Wisconsin as well just not both times. We however never beat KU.

:ez-roll: a single 6 pt game against a then top 10 ten team. oh no haha

Right, can't have a single game in which you score under double figures. That's inexcusable.

Of course, Valentine scored just eight points against -- wait for it -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Buddy had 12 games of 30 or more points, six in conference play. That's one-third of the games OU has played this season. Valentine had two, one in conference play.

Buddy had 26 games of 20 or more points, 15 against conference opponents. That's just under two-thirds of the games OU has played this season. Valentine had 12, eight in conference play.

Then the AP should change the name of the award to "Player of the Conference Tournament Games Played on March 11."
