Denzel Valentine is The AP Player of the Year

This is the BIGGEST joke. AP should quit as an organization WOW how stupid can you get? What morons

I'm reading lots about stats in this thread, but little about COMPETITION. Other than TCU, who did OU have to pick on in the Big XII? Michigan State had...let's see...Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Illinois. Can you imagine the stats Buddy would have put up playing against these teams?

C'mon, guys, show a little respect for Buddy on this one.

Player efficiency rankings, they are neck and neck. Right or wrong, OU's "struggles" in Feb/Mar cost Buddy the award.

Sucks, but he will clean up the Wooden and Naismith.

And a Valentine led team lost to Nebraska at home. No way if OU loses to TCU at home certain members on this board would bring it up constantly as a negative.

Kansas State.....oh, wait.

It's really this simple.

If you really believe a bunch of reporters/sportswriters studied those figures to decide how to vote for POY… well, I've got some nice ocean-front property here in Oklahoma. Could I interest you?

No, it's not. if we were struggling to such a degree that the basketball writers were downgrading Buddy and the team, how is it we didn't drop further in the AP poll?

In the Feb. 22 poll, we were ranked 3rd in the country. After Feb. 22, we routed oswho, beat Baylor, beat TCU, beat ISU on a neutral court, and lost a neutral-court heartbreaker to WVU. In the postseason poll, we were ranked 7th. If the AP voters were seriously turning on us, there's no sign of it.

This fails to take into consideration other teams were losing, too. I don't pay much attention to polls (and neither do voters, because well, they don't matter in CBB), but assume other teams behind OU were dropping after losses. Unfortunately, one of those teams which wasn't losing was Michigan State. Likely due to their strength of schedule.

Really close vote, but like I said, the two awards that matter are going Buddy's way.

It was very close at the end of the regular season. It's not close now. OU faded hard down the stretch.

Kansas State.....oh, wait.

KSU was a borderline NIT team who had a winning record on the season. They would have smoked the six Big 10 teams I mentioned. OSU was worse than KSU, but that's a rivalry game.

How about we settle it this way. What was OU's SOS vs. MSU?

I think this is probably the best assessment of how it went down. Sports writers are notoriously fickle ("what have you done for me lately") and the "news cycle" didn't really favor Buddy. I do find it funny that during OU's "struggles" on the road vs. tournament level competition, MSU and Valentine were feasting on the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Ohio State, Ohio State.

Oh well. Buddy is almost certain to win the big ones, I had just hoped he'd get it unanimously.

This is human nature in general, recent success almost always trumps the past. OU football benefited from it this year.

This. And it really doesn't matter that the MSU and AP apologists think otherwise.
