Football question

Mateer prolly runs harder than hawkins, but hawkins is surely much faster. So run some read options with the RB crashing in and let hawkins get on the perimeter. Mateer can stick with his inside QB run game

Let's not go learn a new offense going into the last week of the season or the Playoffs.

Besides, our young OL is simply not good at run blocking. They are doing pretty darn well in pass protection. This isn't the year to force the run game, because we can't block it effectively.

The OU offense was really close to being good enough on Saturday. Probably 7-10 more points, and they were close to that a few times. Some bad no calls on pass interference. And a few short-field drives that stalled early. Convert just a few more times and I think we all feel a lot differently about things.

the part i bolded adds another layer of bs to the equation.
when someone decides to pay a guy like mateer millions.....the pressure from all levels to play him is so high...it causes reasonable people to make poor decisions.
same

Hawkins hasn't looked very good all season. And certainly didn't last season. I'll take my chances with Mateer.

I think that's a tad generous. I'm worried about their ability to sustain drives. I'm not going to continue to harp on the self-inflicted stuff, but I feel like Mizzou was much closer to making us sweat than our O was to being good enough.

I'm not for an overhaul of the offense, but I think the unit would be well-served by sprinkling in some quick hitters. Our run game develops at a molasses pace.
And I'm like you: I've seen ALL I need to see from Hawkins.

Saban replaced an NFL QB with an NFL QB.

I don't think we have an NFL QB on our bench.

you and coach have the same issues...
saban replaced a starting qb that wasn't getting it done....and it resulted in a national championship.
coaches and players face tough decisions.....

"really close to being good enough"......🤣🤣🤣🤣
can linc borrow that one?

Dude. Hawk could have played against Mizzou AND LSU and not lost his redshirt. You were told that last week. It's not hard to do a little research.

That said, we aren't going to play Mateer all season just to pull him in the Playoffs. That is silly. Hawk isn't the answer and probably needs to transfer after this season. I hope OU looks to the Portal for a better backup.

so round 1 of the playoffs at home....we're down 14-3 at halftime.
you'd roll with mateer.
hopefully bv is more like saban

You sound like the guy posting from his mom’s basement.

If you think YOU have even 1% of the information needed to make that decision, you are a fool.

Again, we’re 9-2 and one win away from the Playoffs. I know that eats you up inside, to the point you are trying to convince the board that we should be playing Hawkins, who we’ve all seen be worse than Mateer, but keep doing you. 🤡🤡

Not sure what you mean by “close to being good enough”. They were actually good enough for that game. But they were not very good. And I agree we are not good at run blocking and yet I still want to see more of it.

Mateer is who he is. He is definitely a good upgrade from last year. His TD pass to Sategna was beautiful. He is a good runner too. But he is terribly inconsistent and I think Arbuckle puts too much on him. I’ll take even more vanilla and more clock consumption.

I also think Mateer is always going to have more success across the middle than with fade routes until he learns to put more air under the ball. He likely gets those PI calls with more air under the ball because the receiver can make a stronger effort to get back to the ball through the DB. You have to sell refs on PI and much more difficult to do with his passing style.

Regardless, I love the team effort and their ability to win these games. Offense will probably be a limiting factor for us on the difficult playoff stretch but this team still has a chance against anyone.

“The offense is just too complicated for him.”
“He’s seeing ghosts.”
“He just needs his confidence back.”
“He does run hard atleast.”

This is the EXACT same stuff we were saying about JA last year. It’s pathetic. He’s a bad quarterback just as JA is a bad quarterback.

Jackson Arnold QBR: 47.9
John Mateer QBR: 68.2

His advanced metrics are about as close to Baker Mayfield as they are Jackson Arnold. Not comparable.

Let's get something straight. Hawkins is not Tua. It's apples vs oranges. We don't have a QB on the roster who can throw the ball accurately beyond 10 yards. As such, you roll with the more experienced guy who got you there as long as he's healthy. We already know what we have in Hawkins. I have no idea why you think he would be an upgrade. If we're in the playoffs and are down more than two scores, the only path to winning is if the defense forces turnovers.

His passer rating in those games was very pedestrian.

His QBR was 82.3, which would put him top 10 in the country.

Heck, the Mizzou guy just played four weeks after redecorating his ankle and honestly, didn’t show any ill effects.

Did you even watch the game? He was awful. His QBR was 20 points below his season average and his passer rating was 40 points below his season average.

we don't need tua.
but mateer has regressed...his completion % against mizzou was 46% and according to gabe...he's making the wrong read/decision the majority of the time.
so it wouldn't take much to be an upgrade.
idk if hawk would be better but hopefully he's gotten better in practice and if we're down against LSU or at any time during the playoffs because of mateer....hopefully bv makes the right decision.

That's cool and all that Saban successfully changed QBs once and it worked, but what about the billion times not changing your QB worked?

Like when we went down 28-3 against Baylor in the first half:

Or when Baker was down 17-3 going into the 4th quarter:

Usually when you bench your starting QB, it gets worse. We've seen Hawkins play. Why do some of y'all act like we haven't?

Running the read option or some designed qb runs a handful of times a game isn't a new offense.

But our QB isn't doing great with pass protection. I think this is exactly the year to force the run.. particularly, by expanding it with new looks

The offense that had like 20 yards almost before half?

Comparing hawk mateer to tua and hurts is asinine
It would be, but not for the reason that you think..

If mateer is a 6.5ish/10 QB, hawkins is like a 5.5/10.

Excluding jackson Arnold, mateer is our worst QB since Trevor knight.
