Football question

I don’t believe this either. It wasn’t a detriment to him or the team. He didn’t perform well against Texas but he likely wouldn’t have anyway. Even with the injury, he gave us the best chance to win that game. Had Hawkins played against texas, we would’ve lost 41-6 after all of his turnovers.

As for the Mississippi game, they are the better team. Period. Had mateer never been injured, nothing changes. We’d still be 9-2.

Because...eye test?

Alrighty. Didn’t have a lot of time, but I was able to do some research on a few names.

Now, these are younger guys from smaller programs who might be willing to compete with Mateer and/or Hawkins. Obviously we are working with hypotheticals. No particular order.

Colton Joseph from Old Dominion. Sophomore. 2518 yards, 21 tds and 9 interceptions.

Carlos Del Rio Wilson from Marshall. Junior, 1907 yards, 17 tds 4 ints.

Anthony Colandrea from UNLV. 2780 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

All these guys are runners, from what I watched.

I understand that the days of dudes actually competing for a spot could be over. With transfer and NIL players can go get paid to play and start from day one. Maybe programs either crown their starter day one or run him out of town and get a new guy in. Mateer should not be run out of Norman. But he also hasn’t played well enough to be crowned the starter again in January. However, the landscape has changed so much maybe OU is stuck with Mateer or go take chance on a new guy.

Without any research on any of these guys.

All low level guys with worse numbers if I remember correctly than JM at wsu.

Raiola, Lagway, Sellers are all expected to be in the portal.
Lagway is a mystery. Tons of talent but hasn’t improved this year. How much of that is coaching and how much is on him? From a talent perspective, he is far ahead of Mateer. Same with Sellers. I don’t watch Nebraska enough to know what to think about the Mahomes wannabe. The mere fact he tries to mimic another person, including his haircut, makes me leery lol.

What evidence do you have that he played to the detriment of the team and himself? None. What detriment? He didn’t aggravate the injury, he wasn’t hurt by it, the team wasn’t hurt by it. So,,,?

I get that. But numbers only tell half the story. I’m not getting paid to do it so I only watched a handful of videos from each guy. But they all atleast seem to have better mechanics than Mateer which is clearly showing to be a pretty big deal. Now, how good is their decision making? Idk. But, point is, there are guys out there who might give it a go competing with Mateer if they had a fair shake at it. Let the best man win.

I don’t think we’ll ever really know how much the thumb bothered him versus Texas. But it wouldn’t shock me if he was cleared prematurely and/or aggravated it during the game.

I think he was throwing at around 80% or so during the Texas game, but the not practicing for three weeks got him. He wasn’t mentally prepared for the big stage and made some serious mental errors which snowballed on him. And now I think the staff is screaming into his ear “Don’t turn the ball over,” which has also affected his play some too.
