Football question

I don’t believe this either. It wasn’t a detriment to him or the team. He didn’t perform well against Texas but he likely wouldn’t have anyway. Even with the injury, he gave us the best chance to win that game. Had Hawkins played against texas, we would’ve lost 41-6 after all of his turnovers.

As for the Mississippi game, they are the better team. Period. Had mateer never been injured, nothing changes. We’d still be 9-2.

Because...eye test?

Alrighty. Didn’t have a lot of time, but I was able to do some research on a few names.

Now, these are younger guys from smaller programs who might be willing to compete with Mateer and/or Hawkins. Obviously we are working with hypotheticals. No particular order.

Colton Joseph from Old Dominion. Sophomore. 2518 yards, 21 tds and 9 interceptions.

Carlos Del Rio Wilson from Marshall. Junior, 1907 yards, 17 tds 4 ints.

Anthony Colandrea from UNLV. 2780 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

All these guys are runners, from what I watched.

I understand that the days of dudes actually competing for a spot could be over. With transfer and NIL players can go get paid to play and start from day one. Maybe programs either crown their starter day one or run him out of town and get a new guy in. Mateer should not be run out of Norman. But he also hasn’t played well enough to be crowned the starter again in January. However, the landscape has changed so much maybe OU is stuck with Mateer or go take chance on a new guy.

Without any research on any of these guys.

All low level guys with worse numbers if I remember correctly than JM at wsu.

Raiola, Lagway, Sellers are all expected to be in the portal.
Lagway is a mystery. Tons of talent but hasn’t improved this year. How much of that is coaching and how much is on him? From a talent perspective, he is far ahead of Mateer. Same with Sellers. I don’t watch Nebraska enough to know what to think about the Mahomes wannabe. The mere fact he tries to mimic another person, including his haircut, makes me leery lol.

What evidence do you have that he played to the detriment of the team and himself? None. What detriment? He didn’t aggravate the injury, he wasn’t hurt by it, the team wasn’t hurt by it. So,,,?

I get that. But numbers only tell half the story. I’m not getting paid to do it so I only watched a handful of videos from each guy. But they all atleast seem to have better mechanics than Mateer which is clearly showing to be a pretty big deal. Now, how good is their decision making? Idk. But, point is, there are guys out there who might give it a go competing with Mateer if they had a fair shake at it. Let the best man win.

I don’t think we’ll ever really know how much the thumb bothered him versus Texas. But it wouldn’t shock me if he was cleared prematurely and/or aggravated it during the game.

I think he was throwing at around 80% or so during the Texas game, but the not practicing for three weeks got him. He wasn’t mentally prepared for the big stage and made some serious mental errors which snowballed on him. And now I think the staff is screaming into his ear “Don’t turn the ball over,” which has also affected his play some too.

Yea Pribula suffered an awful ankle injury and was back in four weeks and honestly, didn’t look like it was bothering him at all.

I just fail to understand how people can blame the thumb for Mateer’s issues. He makes bad decisions. That’s not due to a thumb that he hurt more than two months ago. And he wasn’t very accurate before the injury. The thumb is a convenient excuse.
I’m not saying his struggles have been from the thumb but you really don’t see how his injury could effect his decision making?

Let’s pretend his thumb is still sore. How would that lead him to not see/throw to wide open guys and instead force the ball into coverage? How would it cause him to forego an open check down and launch a deep ball on 3rd and 2?

When you’re not 100% healthy it changes your play and confidence. Every sport talks about this all the time.

Sure thing. Actually, most athletes say that if you’re healthy enough to play, you should NEVER use injuries as an excuse. Also, no athlete is 100 percent healthy. Certainly no football player. Making excuses for an injury that has nothing to do with the mistakes he has been making is a loser mentality. Thankfully Mateer doesn’t seem to be doing it. It’s just a small segment of the fan base connecting a September thumb injury to his inability to make decent decisions in late November.

You asked how being hurt affects your decision making, I gave an answer. His decision making has been better as of late. You can tell the coaches are telling him to be safe with the ball.

And spare me with the loser mentality. You b**** constantly about a playoff team.

So you think Mateer should have just taken an extra month off until it healed more completely while our playoff hopes evaporated with Hawkins under center? That's the true loser mentality right there.

As I said, I wasn’t referring to the team. Was referring to whiny fans making excuses. And you didn’t give an answer. You stated your opinion but have yet to explain how a thumb ouchie affects vision and decision making.

Your fat old thumb injury is not the same. We’ve already been over this. Other athletes have had the same injury, fixed by the same surgeon and it doesn’t take a year of recovery. John mateer is not injured and your “first hand” account of your own injury is a worthless addition to this topic.
My thumb injury was when I was in college. So I was hardly old, and I'm still not fat. What a dumb ass thing to say.

I think with Mateer it's 50/50 - I don't believe he's fully recovered, and as a result he's probably not as confident and more hesitant, which also impacts his play. I also believe he's never played in the SEC before and there was always going to be an adjustment period, which we've seen. Is he playing better lately? That's debatable. I think if he sticks around (you just never know these days), next season he will be much improved.
Exactly. It's not difficult to see how a physical injury could impact things mentally.

Bashing Barnes for not playing and bashing Mateer and the staff for playing him as soon as possible.

That is typical WS flip flopping depending on the circumstances.

CONFIDENCE. It's not that difficult to understand.

WHEN Mateer is much better next year, you'll back track and chalk it up to some miraculous offseason work he put in, or it finally coming together, rather than acknowledging he could have been that guy this year if healthy.

Dude just needs to be a top 15ish type QB for OU to be a top 5 team in the country.
