Football question

I don’t think we’ll ever really know how much the thumb bothered him versus Texas. But it wouldn’t shock me if he was cleared prematurely and/or aggravated it during the game.

I think he was throwing at around 80% or so during the Texas game, but the not practicing for three weeks got him. He wasn’t mentally prepared for the big stage and made some serious mental errors which snowballed on him. And now I think the staff is screaming into his ear “Don’t turn the ball over,” which has also affected his play some too.
There you got. That is the thought path it takes to get to Mateer being much better than he's been. He needs a mental reset, and he probably won't get that until the offseason, though I would expect him to look better in a playoff game simply by having 3 weeks to help "reset".

He was much lower than 80%. Much lower.

As I said, I wasn’t referring to the team. Was referring to whiny fans making excuses. And you didn’t give an answer. You stated your opinion but have yet to explain how a thumb ouchie affects vision and decision making.

It's been explained and data has been provided to support it. But you avoid data like the plague and prefer to lean on the eye test you developed in peewee that said we'd win 6 or 7 games, don't have an elite defense, and our offense hasn't improved.

Correlation doesn’t mean causation. Just remember that. Just because he hurt his thumb doesn’t mean his awful performance against Texas is because of the thumb. He could be lying but even Mateer said it wasn’t the thumb and continues that narrative. I don’t particularly think he’s a deceitful guy but nature so I’m inclined to take him at his word.

So you think Mateer should have just taken an extra month off until it healed more completely while our playoff hopes evaporated with Hawkins under center? That's the true loser mentality right there.
Hindsight is obviously 20/20 but he was rushed back when he probably shouldn’t have. He definitely could have taken Texas and SC off to get closer to 100%.

I don’t think he made any throw Hawkins couldn’t have during the SC game. It was a very vanilla game plan and the run game really did well during that game too.

It affects you confidence, not trusting your own instincts, higher levels of stress & anxiety. That’s coming from a sports psychologist.

Mateer came in being likened to Baker with his cockiness & leadership. Look at Baker when he was playing through an injury at Cleveland, it completely changed his personality.

Everyone said the Missouri QB’s ankle looked great, but he was a shell of himself.

You keep saying he has an “ouchie” and “if it’s hurt”, man do you not get how injuries kill your performance in sports even though it could be fine in everyday life?

Sure, but using the Bayesian method, anybody with common sense would have predicted his level of play would dip after rushing back before trending back up to his previous levels. And then it did exactly that, so we can be pretty confident. We can't ever 100% prove anything. Hell, we might be just living in a virtual dreamworld and not actually exist.

There's a clear reason why his turnovers quadrupled compared to his average and his QBR was cut in half, which hasn't continued. It's disingenuous at best to pretend his surgically repaired hand, which we saw actively bleeding on the sideline, didn't affect him at all.
