Football question

Brian Kelly out at LSU. He was several games better than Brent has been, despite taking over a program that really struggled the previous two seasons. From my vantage point, the only things saving Brent are his past ties to OU and the fact he isn’t openly hostile to the media. In my opinion, neither of those things should matter. Now LSU will be among the schools with a head start on us. I sure hope the new decision maker isn’t going to be satisfied with a mediocre coach.

If you are willing to pay the $75-100 million to fire a coach and hire the next staff, then by all means, write the check. You can talk that **** all day but someone has to pay for it. It’s just not that easy.

Now would be a terrible time to make a coaching change as well. We’d be competing with many schools that have deeper pockets, not to mention, we’d lose every good defensive player and it would be a total rebuild. All while trying to compete for a new coach with Florida, LSU, Penn St, possibly Texas, Missouri, Clemson, and many others.

The best course right now is to keep building with Brent. We should spend the money on getting better players and replacing some offensive coaches. That should be the focus.

Brent also didn’t kill a person. Kelly is just all around a horrible person. When he faked his accent at the LSU basketball game I was cracking up.

I agree. This is not the year to fire Brent. One more mediocre year doesn’t kill OU football. Another bad hire absolutely does.

“Keep” building? That implies we have started building. He took over a turnkey program and has run it into the ground both in on-field results and in talent level. That’s only considered building in the bizarro world.

We are Oklahoma. We shouldn’t worry about competing with other schools. And if we had done the right thing and fired him after his second losing season in three years, we wouldn’t have been competing with those schools, anyway. But I think he could keep crapping the bed for the rest of time and some people would create excuses to justify another season. First he needed time to turn over the awful culture (that resulted in 10 wins a year, consistent playoff appearances, and a boatload of high draft picks). Then he deserved time to adjust to a new league. Then he deserved a chance with a new OC (to replace the bum he chose to hire, mind you). Then he needed more NIL and a better front office (which he got). Then he needed a better QB (to replace the guy he hand picked instead of a Heisman finalist). And now he should get more time because other schools beat us to the punch so we should just stick it out and hope he will magically start recruiting and developing better offensive players?

And the money thing can always be used as an excuse. You could justify keeping any coach for eternity if you want to cry poverty. Joe made a massive mistake by extending him when he didn’t deserve it and there was no chance any other school would hire him given his failures as a head coach. The solution isn’t to let one mistake become two by keeping him.

not saying i think it's a good idea to replace bv....but it's not a certainty we'd be competing against lsu/penn st/florida/ucla/arkansas/etc for a coach.

So if we are debating who is a better person, we can give the nod to Brent. What does that have to do with whether he should be our coach?

When you treat people like crap & everyone in the fan base hates you, you get less grace.

Yeah, I don't see any way we are replacing BV unless the wheels come off of the defense and we end 7-5.

Oh I agree. But Brent seemingly being a decent person shouldn’t buy him five years of grace. At some point, you have to perform at your job.

Agreed. I’m just saying that’s why is hard to compare these 2 examples. I think BV has done an average job overall. But I think he’ll absolutely finish out the year and see how things go the rest of the way.

Everyone still liking move to the sec? Probably top team in Big12, possibly #2.

i'd rather be playing auburn/bama/tenn/ole miss/lsu than kstate/osu/ku/isu/tech
but the margin of error is much smaller now.
bad decisions are magnified

We could not survive as OU in the big12, financially or otherwise. I hate the direction college athletics has taken but we had to move to the SEC to survive long term.

Maybe. Until this week, we simply needed 24 points and no bad turnovers to win every game. This was the first time this wasn't true.

Most on here had also pointed to Arbuckle's inability to develop a run game as the reason he was bad. Assuming these past two games aren't fools gold (it might be), he fixed a massive issue mid-season, which is no small feat.

Again, Arbuckle may not be a star, and I've never felt he was. But I don't support jumping to overly aggressive conclusions based on small sample sizes. These next few weeks will be telling about how far our team has progressed.
We popped a 60-70 yarder this week.. otherwise we rushed for like 70 yards for the whole game. I would not say hes fixed anything yet and if anything, the moron has doubled down on the 1 yard per carry mateer QB run game.. he doesn't even play our best RB correctly

You're definitely right. Its so dumb to fire a coach right now with any sort of buyout imo. Just put it into players instead and wait til hes out of contract... oh and also, dont give good 'ol boy contract extensions you absolute moron joe castiglione

You're being willfully ignorant about the $$$. We weren't turnkey.. were a joke with our overly zealous national champion compliance department and squishy soft joe castiglione. Sure, halfway intelligent coaches would have done better than venables but there were several roadblocks. Those are getting remedied luckily.

Now we just need to ride out the BV years and hire an actual coach in an offseason where we arent competing against several huge competitor jobs. You'll flip out about this but it's simply the reality and most moneyball thing to do

Nah.. but we should have went to the big 10 anyways. Get paid, more credit, (AAU status), and easier road than SEC. Failure of leadership

the way gabe describes mateer's performance....it make you wonder if he was throwing the game.
maybe those leaked screenshots of his venmo were real...
