Football question

yet he moves on to another receiver and throws the ball into double coverage..
none of it makes sense.....unless he's trying to lose the game
he needs to be benched....permanently
find a new qb for next season
sadly I doubt we have anyone on the roster better at this point.

i don't really care anymore.
next 2 games are losses anyway.
put hawkins in and let him demonstrate whether he deserves to stay next season.....or not.
mateer needs to go regardless.
Hawkins atleast is a good runner.

Hawkins has started almost as many games for us as Mateer. He isn't a QB who can be a starter on a team with designs of being a legitimate contender in the SEC. Anyone with eyes can see that, just like many of us could see that Mateer wasn't very good in the first month of the season. I don't think we need to see four more games of Hawkins to know he isn't the guy. We are stuck with those two for the next month. After that, it's up to the coaches or Nagy to figure something out.

We put hawkins in for kent state and he looks bad.
How do you think he will look against tennessee and bama lol?
In reality, if you take away one long scramble and one long pass, both at Auburn, I can't think of much "good" Hawkins has shown against any decent competition. People fall in love with the idea of him as a runner, but is he really a good enough runner to think he could succeed against SEC defenses when his throwing is so, so bad?

probably not great.
but i want a qb in there who is at least throwing the ball to the open receiver....where the play is designed to go.
doing his best to try to win.
and if we don't have coaches who can help him improve over the next 4 games....then we need to clean house

I’ve been saying mateer hasn’t been as good as he needed to be since the Michigan game. He misses some easy throws and he holds the ball a little too long. We had several plays against Michigan that would’ve been huge and led to many more points but he just missed. He did the same thing against Auburn. And it’s been worse against Texas and Mississippi.

His throwing mechanics are not good. I can’t believe he’s made it this far playing like that. I do think he can be better and has been better this year and last. I also think he’s not an NFL QB until he improves his mechanics and his decision making.

After being spoiled with elite QB play for so long, it’s hard to swallow the level of poor QB play we’ve had to endure for the last few years. The last 2 years make Gabriel look like tom Brady and Gabriel was good, not great.
The last paragraph is so true.. mateer is on Trevor knight level, so our worst QB play since like 2014.

We are insanely spoiled, that said, mateer has to get better quickly or we should consider our options bc we prolly over spent on him vs what his real production is (but ou is soft and not cut throat, so they'd never consider moving on and obtaining a savings on $$, in a million years)

Dumb. If you think mateer is bad, hawkins is a fringe D1 QB. He really should switch to WR or go to FCS imo

And I feel like one of the reasons some people bought into Mateer was because Arnold/Hawkins were so bad last year that anyone remotely competent felt like a massive upgrade. So when Mateer put up decent numbers on the surface the first month, people were willing to overlook all the bad throws and questionable decisions, even though a lot of us were worried what it would look like against better teams.

As for your latter point -- that is where Nagy needs to earn his salary. If Brent/Joe C/the new AD aren't tough enough to make that decision, then Nagy needs to be. They already did something a little cut throat when they moved on from one QB recruit in order to go after someone they think is better. Unless Mateer balls out the next four weeks and shows massive improvement (unlikely), they have to do something. You can't win when your QB is in the bottom third of the conference, especially when the rest of the offensive talent isn't NFL quality.

This is exactly my thoughts. Ikard specifically said the throws were high school levels throws. If there is no dude on the roster who can make those throws then everybody needs to go. Maybe Mateer just needs to be benched. Rattler was benched and played much better afterwards. Even JA played better after he was benched. Sometimes it can be a good thing for a player.

mateer played decent ball until the thumb injury. not baker level but good enough to win games.
he appeared to find open receivers and most of the time he threw a catchable ball.
after auburn....i said he just needed to clean up 2-3 throws a game and all would be good.
but now....and i'm just going off of what gabe said because i don't have film that shows the whole field.....he's looking right at open receivers and choosing not to throw the ball. to me that is inexplicable and inexcusable.......and u can't blame that on a thumb injury or poor protection from the o-line.
so bench his ass until he's ready to play like he's coached

How dinged up is Mateer? Thumb will be a problem, obviously. We've heard rumblings of a knee sprain, so one would think that would put the kibosh on QB run game.
He made some incredible escapes Saturday to prevent the sack totals from looking worse. Dude's a gamer......and I've seen more than enough from Hawkins.

Got a chance to listen to the pod you guys were talking about and it just highlights again why I don’t trust Gabe as an analyst. A month ago he was discussing Mateer as a first rounder.

It wasn't just Gabe. He was the betting favorite for Heisman. I was never overwhelmed with him and voiced my opinion here, but he was excellent against Michigan, which is basically the only action he had prior to breaking his hand.

He’s talked about Burks as a game changer for two years.

Again, everybody was saying this. He was explosive at Purdue...look at the film. Everybody in the country wanted him and he was projected as a late first rounder. He had the ball in open space against Ole Miss. It was the kinda play he should have been a threat to a score a touchdown...but he wasn't that threat. Injuries appear to have taken their toll on him. We've had plenty of recruiting misses but he was not one of them.

Yeah, I dont get why people are acting like Mateer is a lost cause. He had an awful performance against Texas, and missed some crucial throws late last week, but his QBR is #46. That's not amazing, but he also has a mediocre supporting cast and had mid-season surgery. Still a higher QBR than Raiola, Arch, Klubnik, Becht, Iamaleava, Sellers, Allar, Lagway, and Arnold. Arnold is #78 with better receivers, so those that think we haven't upgraded have lost their marbles, as have those that want Hawkins.

If not for injury, his QBR is likely top 35. He's had games against UM and SC where his QBR was >80, which is top 10 level.

If he were Baker Mayfield, we win last week easily. But there aren't any Baker's in all of college football and there weren't any last year either.

We also win last week if our defense doesn't start the game with their worst half of the season by a mile.

Maybe we go to Knoxville and Tuscaloosa and get the doors blown off. But maybe we win. Let's see it play out with our best QB, who is clearly Mateer. We played a close game against the #8 team in the country without a Heisman caliber QB, which is not something we've been able to do since Bob left. Eventually we need to start winning them, but I suspect Brent will have a couple top 25 SEC wins before the season is over.

Betting favorite for the Heisman has nothing to do with whether he was projected as a first rounder. And you can't just dismiss the Illinois State and Temple games. He made several bad throws in each game and threw a pick in both. And he was good against Michigan, not great, let alone excellent. We have seen a lot of great QB play around here. Enough to know the difference between good and great. His QB rating in that game was right in line with the rest of the season. His running played a big role, but I am talking strictly about his QB play.

As for Burks -- like I said, he didn't make explosive plays for us before he was hurt. He caught short passes and didn't get many yards after the catch. I have no clue why Purdue could get him the ball in better positions to succeed. But I also don't buy the injury excuse. He was hurt a year ago. He didn't suffer a catastrophic injury, and he isn't a 35-year-old dude. I am not saying he was a recruiting miss. I am saying that the hype on him, like so many of our guys, was way over the top from Gabe. This is the same guy who has hyped up Burks, Gibson, Thomas, and multiple other WRs who have come and gone without moving the needle. He has done the same for a lot of our running backs. I know not every guy is going to pan out, but if even a quarter of the guys he has gushed about over the past three offseasons had lived up the hype, our offense would be a heck of a lot more explosive. He was also all in on Arnold before last season, and spent tons of time this summer talking about how much Hawkins had improved and how many teams he could/would start for.

Arnold was incompetent. Hes now benched at a 2nd school (he wasn't helped by his moronic OC that BV hired...). But I wasn't impressed by mateer in the early season either. He could still turn it around but it'd require good OC play calling too prolly

I say hes definitely a recruiting miss.. we could have taken fliers on so many other players instead of him
