Football question

The OL is not healthy. Not even close imo. Mateer is not 100%. I think the only OL in the SEC more banged up than OU is South Carolina. “Very healthy” is not a good way to describe the offense.

Now, luckily there are dudes on staff who get paid a lot of money to make it work. So no excuses. But they do have one hand tied behind their back because of injuries.

Yeah, anybody trying to say this offense is "very healthy" is really reaching.

The defense overall is pretty healthy, but it's also playing at an elite level.

Funny how the defensive line actually attacks and moves forward and doesn’t get hurt. The offensive line moves backwards and gets rolled up on.

At some point. It hasn't even been a month since he had surgery and you've been acting like it was a year ago for almost 2 weeks.
It was coaching malpractice to play him against Texas. He clearly was not even close to 100%. He may have been barely 50%. Being back by Ole Miss is the standard timeline for his injury. 4 weeks or so.

Probably. And I don't think it is a coincidence that after Mateer played against texas, Hawkins decided to redshirt.
He's probably thinking "they won't even play me when the dude has a broken thumb and is throwing picks, I'm out"

I think you can look at it in 2 ways ... 1st if he doesn't throw 3 picks .. and just plays a little better OU has a good chance to win ..

but him playing poorly coming back early and having not practiced much (or at all) .. was foreseeable .. and an OU loss vs texas with the backup QB .. would not really hurt OU in the playoff race and would have been the smarter program thing to do ..

I am obviously not a Brent fan and don’t think he makes good decisions, but the decision to start Mateer against Texas doesn’t bother me at all. Hawkins just isn’t very good. If Mateer is medically cleared by the doctors and is telling you he can play, you play him. Sitting him because you think the committee won’t hold it against you if you lose with Hawkins is not the mentality I want. I know the 12-team playoff gives you more wiggle room to overcome a loss, but I still don’t think you should approach a game, especially a game against your rival, as if you can afford to play your backup because a loss won’t hurt you. If Hawkins had played well against Kent State and shown real growth from last season, then maybe it’s a fair question. But with his awful mechanics and inaccurate throws, there was no reason to think he’d be able to do much against Texas.

the plan to RS hawkins has been in place ALL SEASON nothing new about it ..
I mean I think that was the general plan but that if anything happens to mateer he would play and if needed break the redshrit.
If mateer goes down again, I bet hawkins does not come in.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Agree. I'm out on hawkins. And I think he likely is looking for somewhere else in december

if mateer had a injury that would cause him to miss a game Hawkins would 100% start ..

if he gets knocked out of a tied game this weekend in the second Q hawkins will come in ..

if his helmet gets knocked off .. and he has to leave for 1 play .. it will not be hawkins ..

Simple surgery.

50%?

Dr’s wouldn’t clear him if that was the case. Players/agents/ family and Dr made that call.

I think Hawkins is nowhere near ready to play in the SEC. I also think he should transfer to a big12-ACC school so he can start and play and develop into a good QB. Hes not getting better riding the bench. We can’t afford to play him and he can’t afford to keep sitting. Let him go somewhere else and develop his skills. That’s what he needs to get better.

lots of guys get much much better in college without playing ..

True, but it hasn’t happened to any of our guys since Riley left. Arnold didn’t develop at all and Hawkins sure didn’t show signs of improvement when he got a chance to play against a really bad team.

Which of Riley's QBs have gotten better under him? I think it is his scheme that produces these great QBs rather than him improving them

Baker Mayfield came in elite. This is Rileys best coaching job...turning him into what he is
Kyler...one year of excellent play at OU.
Hurts...did he really get better at OU?
Rattler...decent first year. Bad second year. And was not great at s. carolina
Caleb Williams...did he improve at all in 3 years under riley?
Shane carden...didn't improve during his 3 years
Dominique Davis...didn't improve
Miller Moss...had a great first year rileys first year and then stunk the following 3 years

This isn't to say riley isn't a great qb coach. I just think he has been extremely luck to bring in elite talent that fits his scheme.
I think if any qb coach had that list of qbs, they all would be considered qb gurus.

Baker went from lightly recruited walkon to Heisman. Kyler was an elite recruit but basically sat for three seasons in college, two at OU, and was then dominant his one year and won the Heisman. Hurts likely wasn't even on any NFL teams radar to be drafted as a QB when he left Bama. He became a Heisman finalist in his one season and has become a very good NFL QB and Super Bowl MVP. Rattler did sit for a season and then play really well his first year as the starter, and Caleb never really had to sit since he took over a few games into his freshman year.

I definitely think that is a very good track record of development of the QBs he coached at OU. And it certainly wasn't just the scheme -- all of them are starting in the NFL currently.

Sure but he’s not going to play next year either. If he transfers and starts somewhere next year, that would greatly accelerate his progress vs sitting on the bench another year.

He hasn’t made any progress at all since he’s been here. He may even be regressing. His footwork and mechanics in the Kent st game were beyond awful. For a guy that’s been here for 2 years, that’s alarming.
