Football question

Our secondary is not above average in the SEC. When it comes to WR/CB matchups, we're losing ground to almost every team, even teams toward the bottom like Auburn.

And yes, elite pass rush can absolutely save a secondary. When Aguilar had time to throw early, he cut through the secondary like butter. It wasn't until we got pressure that he struggled.

Good point. When he had any time to throw, his receivers were WIDE OPEN. Their offense generated more than 450 yards. That didn't happen by accident. Thank heavens the defense finally forced turnovers. We didn't need to complain as much about the defense not forcing turnovers when they were forcing punts, but Tennessee did not punt until Q3. BV needs to focus on upgrading the secondary in the offseason if the defense is going to take it to the next level. I can't see how anyone would question that.

We have NFL corners and safeties... Couple are young. Gentry will be back hopefully next week.

we gave up 17 points until we conceded 7pts late.

1st half was rough but got a lot better as the game went on...

Tenn has one of the best offenses in college football.

Playing NFL Wr's is tough... gonna get beat at times.

we are 22nd in pass def. giving up 181 yards...

I'm not saying our DBs are bad. But week in and week out, our DBs are more vulnerable against theirs than vice versa.

Our defensive production is 90% up front. BV knew what he was doing concentrating our NIL there.

I think this is more of an indictment on our current WRs than our CBs. We don't have the talent at receiver to punish teams in our conference.

My concern as well. If I was spending.. an elite WR is what Id spend on. One of those that Auburn is wasting would be fine...

That's a big part of it. Starting true freshmen not named Stingley, Surtain, or Hunter is also typically telling.

I'm not too worried about the rankings tonight because there is still a month left and a lot of games to sort things out, but this article is kind of interesting in identifying some things to watch for. Realistically, I have a hard time seeing us in at 9-3 if we lose to Bama. Before the season, I would have thought 9-3 would have us right in the mix. But the Texas loss was ugly, and unless we beat Bama, we won't have a top 15 win. Mizzou, especially with a backup QB, will have a hard time even staying in the top 25, LSU won't move the needle much even if we beat them, and Tennessee also is a fringe top 25 team. It would help us if Texas loses at Georgia and to A&M -- we need to them to end up with more losses than us because if we finish with the same record, I have a hard time seeing us being ranked ahead of us since they thumped us on a neutral field. Plus, to get to 9 wins, they would have to pick up at least one top 5 win in the final three weeks.

But the Texas loss was ugly
Was it really though? Maybe by the final score. Was a one possession game in the 4th before the punt return TD. The box score shows it as a close game.
And then the excuse of Mateers hand...I think people will put that into consideration. Dude was still wincing when someone shook his hand pregame at tennessee.

We do need texas to drop 2 more games though for us to get in at 9-3 i think

But the punt return DID happen. And it was the biggest game in the country that day and anyone who watched it had the same feeling, which was that we probably could have played 8 more quarters and not scored on them. As for Mateer -- I don't think the committee will give you the injury excuse when you play. If he hadn't played, maybe that would help us, but when the player and staff decide he is good to go, you won't (and shouldn't IMHO) get any consideration. Plus, it's not like he has played well since then. Maybe if he had proven since Texas that his play that day was a fluke and due to the injury, people would be more inclined to think that was the reason for his poor play. But he is 6 weeks post injury now and still struggling, and the normal timeline for that injury is 4 weeks.

have to win final 3 games to get in playoffs.
shouldn't have come down to that....if we could have beaten ole miss at home....wouldn't need the bama win.

The sloppiness of this team will send me to an early grave. So many false starts. So many procedure penalties. We somehow managed to be penalized 15 yards for a facemask on a kick that was fair caught!

But, man, do they play hard. D-Line is fantastic. Linebackers are improving each week. The defensive backfield leaves a lot to be desired but, when they had a chance to pick off a pass, they snagged it. Guys are running open back there a lot. We gave up an easy TD on a skinny post when we didn't even have to defend over the top. But I will get over it, because I've been smiling since Saturday night. I don't expect to win in T-Town, but everything is spread out right before us. Three wins and we're hosting a playoff game. Sure wish we'd beaten Ole Miss.

Tate Sandell joined the pantheon of all-time kicking games. Here's my list:
Mike Vachon - 1966 Texas
Uwe von Schamann - 1977 Ohio State
Tim Lashar - 1983 Ok State
Tim Lashar - 1986 Penn State
Tress Way - 2009 Ok State

If OU and texas both finish 9-3, they will be and should be ahead of us. I don’t think that’s likely tho. 10-2 and we are a lock. I also thought 9-3 would get us in before the season but now it’s looking unlikely. It depends on what happens with Vandy, texas, and how many SEC teams get in.

Agree but let me make some excuses. But valid points

3 freshmen OL
2 penalties for WR not being squared up to the line of scrimmage? Haven’t seen that in my life!

What really gets me (and Brent has always been this way) is how much of a cushion we give WRs on 3rd down.
With our dline, we should be jamming WRs at the line
