Football question

I haven't been overwhelmed by Mateer and wouldn't bat an eye if he left. But if he keeps playing turnover-free ball, I think we're better off with him over taking our chances in the portal. Would focus on getting a TE to run the 2 TE sets Arbuckle likes and beef up the ground game. We could do better than Mateer, but we could also do much worse.

I agree. I want him back. If a no brainer at qb is available of course take him.
But I would rather invest heavily in WR & RB

uh not really. as a lot of people pointed out, he struggled vs good teams at wsu. His numbers were propped up from bad competition.
I think this is a good lesson for the GM and scouting that Pac 12 transfers can't really adjust in one season to SEC play. It's a step below Big12/ACC, and two steps below top end Big 10/SEC overall.

Ott struggled with the physicality, and Mateer is struggling with the speed and overall complexity of SEC play.

I hear and see a lot of the gamer comments about Mateer. Without this defense, that gamer would have us at 6-5 right now. There are lots of athletes who try hard and are good locker room guys but just not very good. That’s who he has been this season.

I agree...but for the most part he has made just enough plays to win.
But if he was better, we wouldn't be in that position.

I flip back and forth on who is more to blame...mateer or arbuckle.

Arbuckle is to blame for not being able to find a rhythm/identity.
Mateer is to blame for just not being good enough and leaving a lot on the field.

imo we need a massive upgrade at qb next season.
i keep reading that playoff games don't count against redshirts.
if true i'd give hawk another opportunity if mateer's struggles continue.

“The offense is just too complicated for him.”
“He’s seeing ghosts.”
“He just needs his confidence back.”
“He does run hard atleast.”

This is the EXACT same stuff we were saying about JA last year. It’s pathetic. He’s a bad quarterback just as JA is a bad quarterback.

not to mention his crappy mechanics/sidearm bs..
it was an absolute miracle that ball made it to sategna through all the outstretched arms.

Just popped in here to say Boomer Sooner! I was at the game and the crowd was fantastic. It wasnt necessarily pretty, but that is who we are this year. One more to go and we are in the playoffs.

Still a few on here at each other's throats....relax and enjoy the win fellas.
I was there as well. D was incredible. I do echo some of the thread sentiments about our offense. I recognize we aren’t great but I sure wish Arbuckle would at least use more clock when we have 2 score leads. That is all I wish for, and maybe some trap plays instead of just the constant straight up blocking could help. Not sure about the last part though, maybe we aren’t good at that either.

It is very nice to see us win tough football games though. I was concerned about a big mistake and/or a defensive letdown but neither happened. We are a blue collar football team now and it is fun to watch.

Man, you can't be serious with this

it comes down to decisions. either you can make the right decision or you can't.
and that goes for coaches too.
brent said it.....this team has an opportunity in front of it.
either you make the right decisions....or you don't.

Agreed. Atleast have a package or two for Hawkins to come in if Mateer is making bad reads. I don’t think anything should be off the table considering this team has a legitimate chance to make a run in the playoffs.

Even Riley benched his golden boy Rattler during the RRS in 2020. Rattler came back and played much better.

There was a pass to Burks that at first looked like Burks had a shot at it. Would have been a nice pickup. I told my wife: “Burks had a shot at that.” Then the reply showed it was an awful pass. “Nevermind.”
