Football question

yall are crazy.

1. I really don't think Hawkins in the guy
2. You don't bench your starting QB in a playoff game lol.
Hawkins isn't great, buttttt maybe we could give him some gadget plays/package. Mateer is not playing well either and is trending toward hawkins but I still trust him more than hawkins (for now)

Yeah.. I'm not interested in another year of mateer, but we will 90% chance run it back bc were soft and not innovative (but i have to give the exculpatory evidence to the contrary, they did move on from dillon Gabriel in the quest to improve (which i supported) but we Def lost out on that attempt)

yeah that was an easier decision because we had what the coaches thought was a better qb already on the roster.
now with mateer/hawk....the easy decision is to keep mateer another year...unfortunately

bv will play it safe..
mateer hasn't turned the ball over and that's all bv cares about at the moment.

not who he was vs michigan and auburn
His passer rating in those games was very pedestrian. Barely above his season average. Even if you think he was better, those are 2 games, out of the 9 he has played. He is nine weeks post injury. An injury with a 4-week recovery. Heck, the Mizzou guy just played four weeks after redecorating his ankle and honestly, didn’t show any ill effects. People who want to act like the thumb is the reason need to just realize that the difference is, two of the four games before the injury came against JV teams. If you look objectively at just his passing, it was clear from game one that he isn’t accurate enough and makes a lot of risky throws. I’m not sure why his decision making and ability to see the field has gotten even worse, but I do know this: his eyes aren’t located in his thumb.

If your offense is one read and go then Hawkins is the better option imo. I love his speed and elusiveness especially in lieu of no running back option. But there are three million other reasons to keep playing Mateer from the coaching staff perspective ($$).

Im very happy with how the season has played out. I absolutely love the culture, SOUL mission and defense Venables has created. I don’t really care who plays quarterback for OU as long as they keep on winning. They’ve clearly found a formula and Mateer is part of it. This is simply just a fan discussion.

Hopefully there is a legit three man competition for QB in the offseason.if Mateer wins it, great job. But anointing quarterbacks in January has to stop.

the part i bolded adds another layer of bs to the equation.
when someone decides to pay a guy like mateer millions.....the pressure from all levels to play him is so high...it causes reasonable people to make poor decisions.
same thing will happen is basketball this year. reid/davis are going to play a lot...not because they're the best....because they're paid the most.

Yep. It’s completely natural too. It happens in all facets of life.

Well Ott is almost certainly making more than any other RB on the team and they kicked him to the curb immediately (at least with respect to playing time), so you’d hope they would go through the same process at quarterback and every other position. But it does make it very important that Nagy not miss on many more of his evaluations.

sure....when performance is so horrid....the decision is clear.
it's those gray areas that are difficult.
mateer isn't hurting the team with turnovers...he's not helping the team ....so we'll ride with him.
and for now..there really is no other option.
if we make the playoffs.....hawk gives them another option

Hawkins could have already played Saturday. He has only played two games. His redshirt was assured after the Bama game. Unfortunately he is so bad that I think his only role would be a runner. I wish our staff would show enough creativity to come up with a few plays where he could help us in the run game. But since their approach is to simply do whatever it takes to avoid turnovers, I doubt they would risk installing any plays that could jeopardize that.

As for Mateer, he threw the awful pick late at Tennessee and has hit defenders in the hands a couple times the past two games. It’s as much good fortune as anything that he hasn’t turned it over more during this 3-game streak.
