Future Sooners

On the 12th the Prairie School defeated Whitefish Bay Dominican 48-32. Ortiz scored 23 points, had 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists. On defense she helped stop the Dominican star player to half her normal output.

If I remember the games I saw on the net that Northeast played last year, Williams has a good all-around game. And hit some outside shots.

You all, Williams real Name is Lanesia not Laneshia.
Her nickname is Neesie by the way that's what everyone calls her

Penzo's team wins....I watched for about a quarter and while I watched she scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting and 1-2 from the line. She was the best athlete on the court and because of that got several rebounds/loose balls. But she did not dominate the ball on offense as much as I would have expected. Both shots she made were on drives into the paint where she stopped and hit an 8-10 foot shot...showing good athleticism.

Montverde 59, Leesburg 53

Buzz: Gileyso Penzo had 13 points for Montverde (12-1). Adrienne Jackson had 23 points and 4 steals for Leesburg (8-4).

I read where Penzo had a good game when Montverde played Sacred Heart but I don't have stats.

The report on Penzo is, she is a very smooth player on the court but not the fastest.

After a long layoff over the holidays Gabbi Ortiz led her team to a blowout win:

There was no sign of rustiness for The Prairie School girls basketball team after being idle for 15 days. There was just plenty of domination.

The Lady Hawks defeated Kenosha St. Joseph and star freshman center Sidney Cooks 59-29 in a Metro Classic Conference showdown between undefeated teams Friday night in the Johnson Athletic Center. Prairie (2-0 MCC), which improved to 8-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season, took over sole possession of first place in the conference after St. Catherine’s lost to Whitefish Bay Dominican 58-50 Friday night.

“For not playing since Dec. 17, I couldn’t be more pleased with our performance,” Prairie coach Melody Owsley said.

All-State guard Gabbi Ortiz led the way with 23 points, nine assists, eight steals and seven rebounds. But Owsley said it was a team effort against St. Joseph (8-1, 3-1 MCC).

The 6-foot-4 Cooks, who is already drawing national recruiting attention, picked up her third foul early in the second quarter and was held scoreless. Cooks, who averages 13 points per game, was guarded most of the way by Kate Andreucci, who had 11 points and five rebounds.

“We knew they were going to try and lob it to her,” Owsley said of Cooks. “But we played great team defense because we got a number of steals when they lobbed it to her.”

St. Joseph’s other leading scorer, Jalah Harris, was held to four points — eight fewer than her average. Guarded by Rachel Kammerzelt and Becky Kann, Harris did not score in the second half.

Megan Wolf scored 10 points for Prairie while Sammie Woodward added nine.

The Prairie School and Gabbi Ortiz stay undefeated with an easy win:

Everybody played and almost everybody scored for the The Prairie School girls basketball team Thursday night during a 72-15 Metro Classic Conference victory over Catholic Central at Prairie.

The undefeated Hawks (9-0, 3-0 MCC) led 43-2 at halftime against the winless Lady Toppers (0-8, 0-3 MCC).

Prairie’s Taylor Goelz finished with a high school-best 14 points on 7 for 7 shooting from the field, while Sarah Johnson added a prep-best 10 points. Senior Gabbi Ortiz scored 16 points — 14 in the first half.

“We got to play everyone and we didn’t see a drop off when we went to the bench,” said Prairie coach Melody Owsley. “I also give a lot of credit to Catholic Central. They didn’t quit. They are a program in progress and they got great support from their parents and fans.”

In a game on Tuesday, Millwood beat NE Academy 56-34. Lanesia Williams did score 21 for NE.

Kate Andreucci made a nice statement for The Prairie School girls basketball team Saturday night.

The senior center scored 20 of her game-high 22 points in the first half and set the tone as the Hawks beat Milwaukee Saint Thomas More 77-35 in a Metro Classic Conference game at Milwaukee.

Prairie (10-0, 4-0), ranked second among Division 4 teams in the WisSports.net state coaches poll, led 44-23 at halftime thanks in large part to Andreucci, who was just one point under her career high.

“Nobody could stop her,” Hawks coach Melody Owsley said. “We did a nice job of passing the ball to her and she shot 9 of 13 from the floor.”

Senior guard Gabbi Ortiz had 21 points and four assists and sophomore guard Sammie Woodward added 15 points (4 of 7 from the field). Prairie also committed just eight turnovers.

“We passed the ball extremely well, but what I’m most proud of is our offensive balance,” Owsley said.

Alyssa Mane led Thomas More (5-4, 0-4) with 20 points.

Palm Beach Lakes was able to neutralize Vionise Pierre-Louis, Grandview Prep's 6-foot-5 senior center, for three quarters Wednesday night, but the Oklahoma signee showed in the decisive fourth quarter why she's one of the top-rated players in Palm Beach County.

Pierre-Louis scored 17 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning free throws with 6.6 seconds remaining to lift Grandview Prep to a 69-68 win against Lakes in a matchup of county powers at Grandview's gym.

The loss is the first for Lakes (12-1), which will face another county power Saturday when the Rams host Dwyer. The victory improves Grandview, which lost in last year's Class 2A state semifinals, to 12-2 and gives the Pride a confidence boost after losing back-to-back games in an Orlando tournament during the Christmas holiday break.

"This is absolutely enormous for us," Grandview Prep coach Gary Downing said. "We grew up from those [losses in Orlando]."

The game was a see-saw battle from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer, when Xena Dove's three-point shot made it a one-point final result.

Senior guard Neydja Petithomme also delivered a big game for Grandview, scoring 23 points. Johnson was the other double-digit scorer for Lakes with 14 points.

"We failed to box out [against Pierre-Louis] in the end, but overall I'm very proud of my kids," Lakes coach Cassandra Rahming said. "They'll learn a lot from this game."
