Grandstaff picked OU to be closer to son | Sooners Illustrated

Nice read, as always, by Justin Hite!

This article tells the rest of the story behind Austin's decision to leave Ohio State. Playing time may have had something to do with, but I think it's clear that getting closer to his son was the real reason he left.

CoachTalk told me about it when some were expressing their concerns about Austin being a good fit at OU, if he was expecting to come in and start or get starter-like minutes. It was such a personal matter, I asked CT to keep it to himself, and he complied with my request.

My biggest concern was that announcing the news on an OU web site might hurt our chances of getting Austin to pick the Sooners this time. I'm glad it worked out for the good of everyone involved! I also hope this will put any concerns to rest about how this young man will fit in at OU. Coach Kruger wanted him when he picked Ohio State, and he still does. That's good enough for me.

That seems like a very mature and responsible decision by him. OU's had many fathers play on the team throughout the years and some of them have great players/leaders (e.g. Osby). Glad to see the young man make a decision like this.
