Griffin v. Kaylon

If Kaylon out-performs Griffin, why wouldn't Sherri start Kaylon?

I think that which one starts is actually pretty irrelevant. It's which one is going to be in at crunch time that counts, and I think that is as yet undecided.

I still see Griffin as way ahead of Kaylon. When it comes to footwork, hands, decisions, and effectiveness, I don't even see a contest right now. Griffin is playing intelligently, and that is Sherri's game.

Kaylon looked good against rather suspect opposition. But, she also got tied up, lost the ball, line drived shots, and lacked the overall sense of the position. She has some learning to do. It's more than just rust. I think Kaylon was just learning the position when she was injured. Now, she has to learn the position and how it fits with the team.

She's a better rebounder than Griffin. But, I see Griffin as having the lead in every other aspect of the game. I expect Kaylon to play a lot. I don't know if she can catch Griffin this year. Griffin seems to know the position this year. It's one thing to look exciting. It is quite another to fit into a role the way you are supposed to. Right now, I think Griffin is a lot closer to what Sherri wants at center.

I completely agree, Syb. (See, we agree occasionally.) I feel that we like the look of Kaylon a bit more because she doesn't seem to have the fragility that Nicole appear to, but I think the nod has to go to Griffin, and it likely will continue to do so. It doesn't mean Kaylon won't get more minutes than Nic, but the start of the game is key. Essentially, you're taking a three-year starter away by not starting Nicole. I doubt that will change.

After watching Courtney Paris for 4 years, plus Ashley, and then Abi at center, with much softer hands and all stronger and more aggressive rebounders, it is easy to overlook Nicole G's contributions. Her height on defense is a deterrent to opponents driving to the basket, her 1 on 1 defense is very good, and her offense is improving to the point that a 1 on 1 defense of her give us a favorable match up. She is also an excellent free throw shooter. Nicole is not Courtney, not even close, and Kaylon as a senior could be a force like CP, but she is a sophomore coming off a redshirt year from injury. Be patient and give Kaylon time to develop all around mental and physical skills, take advantage of Nicole's height and experience, mix and match for the best match-up with opponents, and be gentle with criticism of players when they are giving their all.

I think Griffin will score more against the tough teams. She is also rebounding much better this year. Last year she blocked out well but didn't go after the ball. This year she has blocked out well and then captured the rebound more often than before.

I am not down on KayKay. She is clearly a strong rebounder but will probably not become a great scorer.

I don't really see them competing that much. Griffin needs quite a bit of rest and they will play at the same time some, depending on how well Kornet and Campbell plays. Griffin will probably start the entire season if healthy but KayKay will probably start some and will get a lot of minutes.

I am excited about how well she has recovered from her injury.

They both have strengths and weaknesses in their game. It doesn't matter. The team needs them both to get to where they want to go. They make a good tandem.
