I forgot that youguys made anew board a couple of years ago...
I sure do hope I am welcome, he-he..My first post will probably stir some flaming but hey, you know me...:)

WELL, HERE GOES NOTHING..........

I truly believe that Capel is over his head coachng in thebig 12. It is one thing to coach at vcu and have some success, now looking back, that maynor kid could have helped any team. Capel did recruit maynor, major props and he made that vcu team a very competitive team..So Did blake griffin for Oklahoma...2 players with extraordinary talent that led their teams to great years...

So is Capel a direct reflection of his players? Is he as good as his players are going to take him? It appears so to me. Let me explain...Without the allstar, which Oklahoma does not have now..he is just an average coach coaching average players...

The big 12 is a very competitive conference and the main reason Kelvin Sampson had great success was because his teams were scrappy, and played hard nosed defense. His team had an identity!!!!!!!! Ohhh, I remember all the naysayers calling for Sampsons head because they only scored 50 points in a game. Oh yea, to make matters worse, we won the game, yet the complainers still complained because it was too boring for them. My argument was why not enjoy the effort our team is giving on the defensive side, look how good they are rebounding, blocking out, ....It was all about the points though for some...Sad but true... and I got flamed and flamed...wouldnt you like to have that no worse than 3rd place in the big 12 conference right now?

Capel has not proved to me that his system works. Does he even have a system? He doesnt have a true post player and his teams play sloppy...too many mistakes, too many lack of hustle plays and way too many lack of defense efforts..

Now we can break down the roster and say this kid can do that, but this kid cant do that..This kid was ranked here and this kid wasnt ranked as high...but the COACH is supposed to realize this and the COACH is supposed to get the player to play at a high level, or just a level to compete.. I do put some weight on the shoulders of the players because after all they do have to perform, right? The coach is the coach for a reason though.

The last 5-7 games, yes they have competed..They are playing better but we never stood a chance against texas...Those were going to be 2 easy losses..the game in stillwater, thats a game we probably were not going to win either..not there..that game there is never a given, so with those 3 losses, im not too upset. even last night, I didnt think we were going to beat Kstate at kstate...

I beleieve if this were Kelvin's team, playing with the same players, 2 things would happen..1: Kelvin would do what he is what notorious for and that is getting every ounce, every drop of sweat out of all his players...He made a weaker player play average and his average players played like 5 stars..

2: He would have easily made this team a defensive team..not great on offense but he would have demanded to better on the glass, take and keep control of the basketball, no foolish turnovers and of course his team would not allow 70 -80 points a game....

I am talking about this team in general not any teams he coaches before..I know those hollis price, ryan minor years, we had some game where we scored a ton of points and have up a ton of points but not this team....

So what do we have forward to look to? Is this madness going to stop? Will Oklahoma get to the place where we made the ncaa tournament and was at least and a hard draw for the better teams?

will we compete in the big 12 where we finished no worse than third place for so many years?

Will we out recruit baylor? wow that still shocks me.. I know drew is a good coach, and a great recruiter..but we are still Oklahoma....Does that have any more magic to it? Did Oklahoma basketball lose its identity? Do kids even care anymore?

I do not know but no matter what I will always be a Sooner fan and I love basketball...I hate to see us lose so many games but I do like big 12 basketball and I know for now, there are 4-6 teams who just have more talent than what we have...Plain and simple, We are not going to beat the better teams with less talent..That is not our identity....

I am not saying fire capel...I do not know the answers but I do know if he cant recruit any better than what he is doing, we are going to sink into that bottom 4-5 teams quick.....I hope not...and if he cant get more out of his kids than the same as well...

let the flaming begin, and trust me, I have been thru this rodeo a time or 2......again hello to all my friends , missed talking to you all...I will even say his to old skyview, r u still around dawg

Capel has made enough mistakes and has had some bad luck in high doses. He is the one to be held accountable for mistakes in player evaluation. That is, recruiting players who are not capable of playing at this level. Players like Hardrick, Cannon, Leary, Nick Thompson, etc. He is responsible for recruiting knuckleheads who can play well at this level - Willie Warren, Tommy Mason-Griffin, and the big kid who left whose mom allegedly got 3K wired to her with the help of our now departed assistant coach.

Yet, there is a positive side. Capel is playing a really young team now - Cam Clark, Tyler Neal, Carl Blair, Steven Pledger, Andrew Fitzgerald - 2 freshman and 3 sophmores. The nucleus of his team disintegrated on him all at once. Andwhile OU does not have enough talent as they need, at least in the starting line-up, they are suffering at least as much because of their youth. And, without having enough talent this team plays pretty good defense - at least in stretches - before they breakdown. They look like a team when you watch them; but they do have some glaring deficiencies like lack of offensive rebounding. Heck even defensive rebounding has suffered because of the lack of bulk and size. These problems have exacerbated the lack of focus on basketball in the football crazed Sooner state - read small crowds.

Castiglione is going to have an interesting evaluation to make. He has pros and cons to balance out. Nevertheless, Jeff is a young coach. And the time to be most concerned about his learning curve was years ago when we hired him rather than now. His team, despite it's youth and deficiencies, is not very far off from being competitive in the Big 12 for the upper third of the conference standings.

I don't know what will happen. Nor am I sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that I know what should happen. I am leaning toward sticking with him. You can rebound quickly in basketball. It will be interesting to see what will happen. Getting a stud or two in the late signing period to ink with OU will be a very positive development for Jeff's fate.

ILUV, it's about danged time you showed up! Great to see you, my friend!!!

I doubt if anyone here will flame you, and most will not disagree with your take on Coach Capel. Certainly not me. The last two years have been brutally tough for die hard Sooner basketball fans who are not accustomed to sub par performances and seasons where the big number is in the column to the right. That is not OU basketball! We can only hope it will improve in the very near future. I, for one, cannot take many more seasons like the last two.

Welcome back. Hope all your posts aren't this long! :)

I started to read it all but stopped and figured I'd wait for the movie.

It's always nice to see former posters come back and start complaining. Nice book, you sure were missed. See you next year.

I agree with that, but I'm not sure what you're getting at.

I think Hardrick was an early commit during Sampson's tenure, not Capel's.

It's a relatively minor nit to pick out of that post, in my opinion, but I think that's what he was getting at.

Hardrick was a capel early commit.

So Hardrick was Capel's first signee? If so, that's very telling.

I was about to comment about how this thread started off with some good, level-headed opinions and criticism and not as much "farr eeem" as others, then everybody starts ragging on a returning guy from the old board for having a long post, and forgetting who recruited freaking Hardrick? Sorry I got my hopes up. Does reading too much make your head hurt? Is your scroll button broken? It's strictly voluntary reading, I promise.

Welcom back ilove. Prepare to get frustrated.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr eeeeeeeemm!!!!! Long posts are bad! Derpa durrrrr!!!!

Sorry if I posted misinformation, but I thought Hardrick was a commit much earlier (if an unsigned one). I thought he committed in his freshman or sophomore year, back when he was thought to be hot stuff and that, by the time he signed, his stock had fallen and some were already saying it was a mistake to bring him on board.

Calaway, I'm terribly sorry I played a role in spoiling this thread for you. I don't often get my facts wrong, but if I did this time, I deeply regret it. I will endeavor never, ever to let you down again, and even as I type this, I'm making out a check to your favorite charity in hopes that you'll see your way clear to giving me another chance.

He committed to Capel his freshman year.

Missed your opinions luv. This is pretty much an echo of a bunch of posts over the last year or so, but still good stuff. Can't say there's much to really disagree with.
