1. they were hustling. I think I can count on my fingers how often that happened last year.

2. they were passing the dang ball. not as much as coach wanted, but they were actually passing.

3. the point play seemed decisive. our guards didn't look lost like they have for 2 years. they took some ill-advised shots...but many were actually decent shots (uncovered) just a tad early.

4. saw some nice flashes out there. some real quickness, some nice shooting, some comraderie.

I can certainly root for this team. I think they're gonna be more fun to watch and I am interested in seeing how much better they get over the year. We definitely have weaknesses ... but that's the fun of it all.

Great points. I saw nerves tonight. Now they have one under their belt. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

i liked the message capel sent newell after his two ill-advised shots. he sat, pledger ran the offense in the middle of the second half, and newell got the message and helped lead the team back late in the game. i hope it sticks and isn't something that has to be re-enforced in the future.

I hope for the best but they looked pretty weak to me.

Cade seemed rushed on his treys.

Liked Newell but a true frosh in the Big 12 is pretty rough.

A lot of people ragging on Fitz but a double double in 26 minutes isn't too bad.

Pledger's treys still don't look right. Maybe confidence. I did like his mid range stuff.

Team has to improve a lot to compete in the Big 12.

I don't really care about hustling if the guys arent very good or well coached... I guess trying hard is just assumed, and not something I think of as a great characteristic. If you are well coached you should try hard, period.

I dont know how you could watch that and like what you saw... There were some nice things, like Pledger and some Newell plays, but if last night is any indication this is going to be a horrid year.

I think you should just come out and call for Capel to be fired. No if this or that, just say it.

Watching last years team was bad for my blood pressure since nothing makes me madder than talented players with bad attitudes who don't give 100% effort and have no work ethic. I will have no problem supporting this team as long as they leave it all on the floor every night and play as a team.

Our basketball tradition is not on the same level as our football tradition; in other words, I don't expect the team to compete for Big 12 or NC year in and year out. That being said, I was pleased to see a young team that worked hard and started to figure it out in the 2d half.

There are certainly more talented teams in the conference and I don't expect our guys to win the Big 12 this year. But I do anticipate the team finishing higher than the predicted 11th place finish due to being able to put 9-10 players on the court, night in and night out, who work together, hustle, and have the ability to score. I see the team as a middle-of-the-pack finisher; I'll predict they finish 7th in the conference.

OU does have a high level of basketball tradition. The standard at OU is to make the NCAA tournament every year, no excuse not to at OU.

I agree with OKURanger.

I liked the hustle, I liked that we passed a lot; no ball hogs. I only saw part of the second half but I thought Honore (spell?) was pretty good for a walk-on. Fitz and Bird looked better.

Obviously there were a lot of things that we didn't do so well, but this was the first game they've played together, and that's always a little sloppy, esp. with 9 newcomers.

First off....I think you guys talking about the team looking weak, etc are getting WAY ahead of yourselves and expecting WAY TOO much WAY TOO early.

There are far too many new faces to expect these guys to be in mid-season form right off the bat.

If they hustle and play hard but lose a few games I am fine with that as long as there is some IMPROVEMENT throughout the season.

They are about where I would have expected for a first game with so many new guys. Also, they were missing a couple of guys who could end up being important pieces. Washington might be their best rebounder and he didn't even play.

Also, what some of you don't realize is a lot of OUr offensive plays aren't really SETS but they are reading and reacting off each other and that style takes time and chemistry to become really good at. Don't expect these guys to come out gangbusters and set the world on fire immediately.

Patience is a virtue.

:clap some of these posters just see the glass half empty and thats fine, but i saw a team play with more pride and heart than the team that walked off the court in the Big 12 tournament last year. Yes, OU will have its issues this year, but to think this is the finished product is crazy.

I'm with CoolM. Now is it okay to go 15-15 as long as we play hard? No. Expectations should be higher and I think we all expect more BUT if the guys work hard, play together and improve that is all we can ask from this team. Let's give them a chance and see what happens. A lot of new faces to the OU program and to NCAA basketball. Give them some time.

We? WE! We are SOONERS! [Kicks Cheno into well in slow motion, throws TV playing Northern Iowa's Ali trey ball along with him.]

Romulus, I agree and if OU finishes in the top 7 of the conference then there's a good chance they'll make the NCAA tourney.

Sorry o wise one, OU should make the big dance 90% of the time which is what has happened for the last 20 years at OU before Capel.
Now if you want to hold Capel to the pre-Billy Tubbs standard at OU then that's what's ridculous.

you can call me names all you want. I am still going to think that is a ridiculous standard.
