I remember people clinging to John Blake

Barry's was a different era. It's much tougher to overcome those problems in the age of the internet.

There's no doubt Gillespie is an excellent coach. I just can't see us taking a chance on him.

BCG replaced a guy who won a NC at Kentucky...and did what...only made it to the ncaa tournament 1 out of 2 years. And thats not to mention that he had Patrick Patterson, Jodie Meeks, and Joe Crawford on his teams there and struggled to win. He lost with Meeks, Bredley, Crawford, and Patterson on his team to Gardner-Webb, UAB, Houston, and San Diego in their Non conference schedule and finished w/ 18-13 record but managed to make the tournament somehow w/ that record. He started off the next season with a loss at home to Virginia Military...and ending the season with an NIT birth and a 22-14 record. EXCELLENCE COACH MY ASS!!!

BCG at aTm 04-05 season...beat 1 ranked team(T.T.) and lost in the 3rd round of the NIT. 05-06 season...beat 0, thats 0 ranked teams.

This is the guy you think should replace Capel?

Not I. That was htown.

Hasn't the football team already tried the "replace the nice guy but overwhelmed coach with an alchoholic" strategem? Didn't work too well, although it did eventually lead to Coach Stoops.

As long as this team keeps improving, which it seems to be, I'm good with him getting another year. Improvement next year (postseason tourney) would mean another year in my book. Any more NCAA issues would make it all null and void to me. Also, if it comes out that he had any knowledge of the Tiny situation, that would change it for me.

Yesterday was the first time since the Kentucky game that I could stand to watch an entire game. They're starting to gel as a team, and it's understandable that it took so long, since there are 9 new players.

what an aweful comparison... there may have been 10 people that didnt want blake fired and they were all his relatives....

Says people in the administration. Funny you didnt argue about he smugness to people in AAU. That tells me you know he is not respected in the AAU circuit.

I don't know nor do I really care. And who in the administration has said Capel is "smug", when did they say it, and where can I read it in print?

It doesn't have to be in print to be true. People in the administration often said the same of Sampson but he was winning. People do not say the same thing about Bob or Sherrie and never have as far as I know. I understand you not wanting to beleive it is because it is not espn.com, but again not everything is in print.

In my 7 or 8 yrs on various Sooner related message boards, I have come to realize that we have a faction of fans who obsess with being right. They become so focused on an agenda against a certain coach, player, etc that they cannot focus on anything else. They enter threads that have nothing to do with their obsession, and they immediately hijack said thread by focusing on their obsession.

Many of these posters are actually very knowledgeable about a particular sport, and many otherwise would be great additions to the board, but because of their agenda/obsession they become annoying at best.

Sadly, we saw it with Kelvin Sampson and the posters who were determined to run him off. Many of them now have turned their obsession towards Capel, and they even compliment Sampson in order to bash Capel.

By no means am I saying that KS or JC should be free from critique and criticism, but I'm talking about the obsessive types who see nothing right it what they do.

It really is a sad thing. Heck, over on a certain Sooner board there is a guy who has had an obsession with Venables/Stoops for several yrs. Even after we won our BCS game, he immediately jumped on the board criticizing the coaches, and downplaying our win because we beat Uconn. His obsession with hating the coaches has taken away his ability to enjoy the Program that he claims to love.

To each his/her own I guess. I would just as well find something else to do with my time, if the thing that I'm doing becomes so counter productive and negative that it makes me see nothing but bad/negative no matter what is going on......

I was never a Sampson basher. I think he was a great coach and we will have a tough time getting a coach as good as he was. Capel's record speaks for itself. It's not up to OU's standards. There's a good chance he finishes this year with the worst record in 5 years as OU coach in over 40 years.

Capel has been here 5 years. 3 of them are the worst we have seen in 30 years. Reasons why can be debated, the results cannot.

Then obviously I was not talking about you.:woot

I have heard you get after Stoops pretty bad though, but at least you give credit when they earn it. Like I have said many times, Capel has earned alot of the scrutiny, but it just gets old when that is all certain posters want to talk about. Obviously he is not going anywhere in the middle of this season, so why not just support OUr guys, hope to see improvement, and let this thing play out???

It starts to sound like a broken record at some point.....

It does sound like a broken record. Especially when posters give the impression that a sign of improvement by a player or heaven forbid, a win, is a cause for concern instead of a cause for celebration.

As I said earlier in this thread I think the better comparison for Capel is probably a Gary Gibbs.

He did a okay job, not up to OU standards in football. Took us to a couple bowls, had a couple bad years. And was basically fired because of the standards of the OU football program.

Capel has done an okay job. Not up to OU's basketball standards. Taken us to 2 post seasons. Has 3 winning records in 5 years. Has 2 bad years in a row going. He's put himself in a real tough spot for next year because of these 2 seasons. Basically it's NCAA Tourney or bust for him. And it's real tough for him to make the NCAA Tournament with his 40% rate at OU so far.

Its an interesting arguement and comparison. I honestly hadn't thought of it but it does carry some merit imo.

I was one of those that was "clinging to Blake". I'll admit it. I thought he was starting to turn it around after his last year and the way we finished that season. Obviously, I was dead wrong and I not afraid to admit it now.

The part that bothers me about Coach Capel is that I am still not sure what we try to accomplish on offense. I see team after team - New player after new player - standing around in the halfcourt and not passing/dribbling/cutting with a purpose. Its like aau ball to me. I also have yet to see us have a team with good helpside defense or a team that excels in transition defense. There are just a lot of questions in my mind as to whether or not the guy can coach at a high enough level to win consistently at a school like OU.

This is not an easy job. We need a great coach to do well here. We've had two in a row, and I hope Capel can grow into the third in a row but at this point I have some serious doubts, and I don't want him to run this program into the ground because Lord knows it will be VERY difficult to get it back turned around due to all the things working against us (piss poor fan support, football school, thunder etc...).
