I remember people clinging to John Blake

I don't disagree with you, however, the difference in Capel and Snyder and some other coach who advanced to the Elite 8 is both did it with programs that were very good over the previous 25-30 years. I would argue OU was a top 10 program from 1984 - 2003 and probably top 20 from 1978 - 2008. Mizzou was probably a top 10 from 1976 (or sooner) - 1995 and then a top 30 program from 1975 - 2002. This separates Capel and Snyder from say Steve Alford who took SW Mo State to the Elite 8 in 2000 and then did nothing after that at Iowa, or the George Mason coach who took them to the Final 4 one year and not even the NIT the next.

FYI, Iowa was a top-25 or so program for the past 20 years before Alford took over. Actually, there are lots of similarities to Alford and Capel which is why I lean toward letting Jeff straighten it all out, because Iowa hasn't recovered from the mess Alford left.

There is a comparison. Blake just couldn't coach, Snyder cheated and our Jeff has no ablility to make personnel decisions. He loses top recruits every year and most are playing elsewhere.

So even though the weakness' are different all had significant issues thus the other 2 are out of it. Jeff Capel is not a Big 12 program head coach.

You missed the point of my post entirely.

You are probably right. Alford didn't return to SW Mo State after 2000 when he took them to the Elite 8, so it wasn't all his fault they didn't do much in 2001. He was the first coach that came to mind when thinking of coaches who took a team to an elite 8 then fell on hard times the next season.

Tom Davis looked like a great coach by the time Alford was done...at least Joe didn't force out Sampson to hire Capel or he'd probably be in hotter water even though that would be tempered by the performance of the football program.

Believe me, Iowa fans would take Dr. Tom back in a second! He was a very good coach.

Not another Blake/Capel comparison.

Once again for seemingly the millionth time, that comparison is comical to say the least. It doesn't fit at all.
True dat.If you insist on cmparing Capel to an OU football coach I wouls say Fairbanks is much more apt than Blake and obviously Chuck was pretty good.
