Is the NCAA executioner killing us or is it something else?

I am beginning to wonder if the NCAA executioner hanging over our head is what is really killing us with the coaches and that we are going to get about as close to the death penalty as you can get without actually being executed.

Or is it that OU's program is in such shambles that no one really knows how bad it is (if so Joe C. needs the entire blame), OR is it a combination of both?

What say you guys?

Joe is waiting for the NCAA's to be over for VCU so he can hire Shaka Smart,

if the NCAA comes in and kills us I get the feeling it'll be considered mercy at this point.

I realize that OU was on probation when the potential violation occurred, but why would anyone think that OU would get the death penalty or anything close to it? One player got a loan from a financial advisor before he attended OU. The financial advisor had some contact with an assistant at OU that was fired as soon as allegations of impropriety came to light. Even if you look at things is the worst light (an assistant at OU was aware of a player receiving a loan from a financial advisor), I don't see that resulting in more than minor penalties. Maybe someone can explain to me what I missed.

P.S. I am ignoring the fact that the advisor tweeted at Willie a couple times. There is no proof anywhere that they had any real contact.

I wouldn't pay any attention to them. First, there's no such thing as the "Death Penalty" anymore.

Second, like offenses (and even worse offenses) suggest at worst OU will suffer a loss of 2x2 and MAYBE one postseason ban...with the ban being rather iffy.

What's happening is no one hears anything so they fill in the blanks themselves with whatever horrible speculation they can concoct. myself included.

Can we calm down? Our rumored first choice has yet to sign up on his contract renewal. He probably will but the door is not closed. Just be thankful that Joe C doesn't do his job search in the open like some schools.

The only thing killing us is the impatience of message board people.

I have no problem with Joe C. taking his time, interviewing people. And just because a tweeter or a blogger here or there is saying so and so was talked to, doesn't mean it was so.

For all we know, he's set in his mind to get Stevens, and all he's doing is waiting for Butler to finish it's tourney run.

In the meantime, he's going to funerals, taking in some women's hoops, and watching coaches all over the country get raises because of him.

I LOL'ed when I read the last line of your comment.

Although the suspense is killing me, I'm okay with Joe C. doing his search out of the public eye. What bothers me is that he appears (notice I said "appears) to have committed a Capel recruiting error by focusing most of his attention on one coach, only to discover later that he was being lied to or used.

Our former coach made that same mistake in recruiting so many times it still hurts to think about it. Oh, I'm sure our AD will recover and find someone in time. But as other schools with a vacancy are making nice hires, OU is left scrambling to find someone who wants the job.

Very well said.

Is our program habitually crooked (albeit minor offenses), or do we just self-report/get turned in more???

I HAVE to believe some of the issues that have been uncovered go on ALL OVER THE PLACE...maybe I'm wrong.

Whichever it is, I wish it'd stop!!!!

How really, rightly, honestly and truly true.

The determination of whether a school makes a nice hire is done retroactively. I don't care if OU got Bill Self, Roy Williams, Rick Patino or John Calipari. If they don't produce at OU, it is a bad hire. I honestly don't care if OU hires a big name coach. I just want OU to hire a coach with characteristics similar to Kelvin Sampson, Billy Tubbs and Bob Stoops - a winner.

BoulderSooner says no serious sanctions coming. When BoulderSooner says it, I believe it.

I used the term "nice hire" loosely to suggest that the coaches being hired by those schools appear to be sound decisions, based on what we know about their reputation. I certainly agree that only time will tell if the agreements drawn up on paper will prove to be sound over the long haul.

My main point was that we seem to be lagging behind for some reason. Whether that's the AD's fault because he was too trusting or another matter entirely, is pure speculation at this point. I just hope we get some good news soon so I can stop worrying about it.

Sorry guys. I wasn't being impatient about Joe C. hiring a coach.

I hadn't seen anything recently on the NCAA situation and just was wondering realistically how this issue was impacting our coaching search.

As for the "death penalty" line --- having a coach know before hand that an agent is paying a players tuition to a private school is pretty bad -- made worse because of our recent penalty.

Maybe the NCAA doesn't look at it that way anymore but I think it used to.

Anway it's nice to read people say we aren't going to get smacked hard. If that's the case, then the answer to my question is that the NCAA probe isn't hurting us much at all.

Good.

Does OU get hit harder or does Tennessee get hit harder, My guess is Tennessee does, Cuonzo Martin (good hire or bad hire) feels he can win a championship there. My guess is if you can win one at Tennessee which I also think can be done you can surely win one in Norman OK at the U of O. We need someone who is ready to tackle the problem that is left and take us to a level in which I think we can get.So no if i a guy really wants the job the NCAA violations wont mean crap.

Even though I don't think we will get hard, I'm not sure it isn't hurting us. I actually intuit that it's the biggest obstacle Joe C is facing in this search.

Umm that would be pretty bad.

Good thing that didn't happen.

Wow
