Jeff Capel to Arizona State?

Lon retires and Archie takes over

Hey it would be one sure fire way to get students to come to games

That's nothing compared to what Tempe/Scottsdale has.

Jeff Capel showed that he is capable of coaching a very good team at OU, his inexperience and gambles didn't pay off in the end though. If he's learned some lessons, I think he might do very well.

That's one perspective. From my point of view, he showed that he was only capable of winning with a once-in-a-lifetime #1 overall pick level talent. Without that kind of talent, he proved that he was capable of losing records.

Throw in the shady characters he seemed willing to allow into his program (Taliaferro, Gallon, Griffin III) and the way he treated fans and boosters, and I just don't see why another major college would be interested in Jeff Capel as head basketball coach.

If he gets it then the job will be open again in a few years.

He sunk our program to the bottom, I for one will pull against him having any success

I think people underestimate how valuable his time under coach K has been. You don't think they discussed his failures at OU and how to correct his mistakes? Saying that I'm not sure if anyone can get him to improve his fan relations.

Not just fans. Former players, donors, alums, etc. He was a jerk to everyone. He was "too good" to be at OU.

I'm not "well connected" within the athletic departmeent by any means, but the people I know who dealt with him liked him personally.

Lots of contrast between what Indy posted and what Sperry posted. I have no idea which one is closer to the truth, but one of them has to be way off.

I wish Coach Capel the best...no hard feelings from me. I thought most of his mistakes were correctable. However, I'm not sold on his recruiting "instincts". That would be defined as getting a high 3-star or low 4-star and being able to develop that player into a program builder. Almost every player in this year's rotation would fit the high-3 / low-4 category.

I can't speak to the HR element, but I did hear BBJ on the radio the other day saying he will always be in Capels corner because of the great way Capel treated his father. From a Basketball standpoint he was definitely a disaster. I could see why a program like ASU would give him a chance, but I personally will be surprised if he is anything close to resembling successful.

Capel could do no wrong in quite a few peoples' eyes, until he bombed royally in 2009-10. That was maybe OU's biggest underachievement in a major sport, in school history - at least based having three McD's All-Americans on the roster.

It'd be interesting if it comes down to Capel or Neal. I think Neal may be sick of the "Albuquerque Fish Bowl" already. The media treats coaches like crap, unless they're either (A) buddy-buddy with them (like the infamous Norm Ellenberger of "Lobogate" scandal fame) or (B) scare of them (Alford). And the locals think they ought to have the reincarnation of John Wooden on their bench.

I have always found the hatred directed at Capel a bit curious. He was a young man, and I think he was under the illusion that he could achieve great things. He took a chance on some players that other major powers may have been avoiding due to their own problems, and he may have been surprised to find that he could not control them. I think he felt the need to reach for the stars, as though that was what he had been hired to do. Like Icarus, the wax on his wings melted when he flew too high.

I doubt that he will take that kind of chance again, and I think it has probably been made clear that he is under no requirement to do so. They know who they are hiring, and unless they are mistakingly reaching for the stars, it should work out.

Want to control problematic players? Bench them. At the very least, don't start them and cut back on their minutes. He never did that.

Capel not only brought in those guys, but the inmates were running the asylum (or so it seemed).

I couldn't care less if he gets the ASU job or not. I don't give him a first, much less a second, thought except when he's brought up on this board.

Doesn't his kid play for him?.Cullen I think...pretty good player..correct me if I'm wrong but once he went down for the year their season pretty much tanked..not sure of his eligibility status...funny you mention Alford as well...was it true he re-upped at UNM then left for UCLA?...didn't realize the media was like that in Lobo land

The media issues in Albuquerque are partially driven by the whole Heisenberg mess.

It can easily go both ways. I had multiple opportunities to interact with Sampson through dorms, going to games, and through business college. Sampson was great at some events, others went through the motions, and a few times with the attitude he was giving you didn't dare talk to him. I assume it was the same for Capel. Get him at the right time he was great, but the wrong time or wrong person and it was not a good experience.

I think people on here rather see him fail then succeed. I could careless. He's not our coach anymore. His successes or failures will be nothing more than to ***** about.

Kruger is here now. Capel is gone. Good luck to him and hopefully Kruger can get him another elite 8.

I always wondered about Capel's x & o's ability. Also even with Griffin we had some horrendous defeats by big margins. And he seemed a little intimidated by the ego of his players.

Maybe he will be able to put all that behind him. Coach K hasn't turned out coaches that have had big success. I have no real interest in how he does moving forward but wish him well.

Gray at Notre dame is doing good. Tommy amaker has had good success to. Capel has had good success.
