Jordan Shepherd reportedly has signed with OU

I actually thought i typed baggage. Either way, theres always the baggage excuse for the players we don't bring here. The only in state player I've seen with baggage is Clark. Someone was talking about Jolly having baggage to and I don't know if it was coach that said that as well.

He was academically ineligible at UTEP the fall semester. That's probably the baggage to which he was referring.

This commitment is going to be one of the best or worst commitments ever under Kruger. I don't know anything about him but what I do know is that this kid was recruited and taken in a year where the state of Oklahoma had a lot of talented high school seniors that we didn't recruit or offer...long, waters, jolly, Evans, McDowell.

On top of that, this commit takes away an open scholarship for the 2017 class. If John commits, that's it on scholarships.

I'm just baffled.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!

The state of Oklahoma for the most part doesn't produce great basketball talent. Sure, the state's had some good ones -- Adams, Tisdale, Dumas, Griffin, Sheldon Williams, etc. -- but for the most part they aren't near as good as players from other states.

The goal is to get the best players PERIOD.

I don't know how a coach can be blamed when the kid didn't get an offer.

I wasn't talking about Harris but the other kid from PCW this year. Is it Tyson?

If the PCW coach is bent about Harris not being recruited by OU then why should that hinder the recruitment of his current or future players? That's my point.

Thats what i'm talking about. Jolly wasn't offered.

I agree, the goal is to get the best players. And this Shepherd kid could actually be one. I'm not saying he won't be either.

However, your comment is way off about Oklahoma kids. You miss Etan Thomas, Big Country, Xavier Henry, Ryan Humphrey, and the list goes on. And some of OU's best teams has had some solid local kids on the roster. This final 4 team had 2 local kids starting. The elite 8 team had 2 local kids starting (3 if you include Crocker). Another year we had Godbold, Bookout and Gray(ok Juco player...counts)

Thomas I missed, I knew I probably missed a few. Country wasn't recruited by anyone but OSU. I saw him play in HS and he was not even close to D1 material. It was a joke at the time that OSU was recruiting him. He surprised everyone and became a good player. I can assure you Tubbs wasn't the only coach that missed on him.

The others you list never played in the NBA except for a cup of coffee.

Frankly, we need better recruits than Godbold, Crocker, Gray and Bookout. None of them were upper level college players, Gray had the ability but not sure what happened to him.

I think this hurts Strong more than anyone! I feel like we have 2 guard spots that we can play 4 guys in.. Woodards spot will mainly be him playing 32-35 minutes a game! Guys will just have to understand and split time!! Lattin and Woodard are the only guys that should play 30 plus minutes consistently.
I agree that Shepard takes minutes from Strong. This kid thinks pass first and will be a good player as a true Frosh.
He will come in and work hard and have a great attitude. He is well spoken and comes from a great environment.
He is a much better prospect than F Booker.

Strong or Manek is the only one I see getting pushed out over Shepherd. Love the signing just curious since I thought we were all in for John & Young. I get you need a backup plan but Shepherd is 2016 & Young is '17.

Starks.

Based on that highlight video, Jordan is an exceptional passer, has some creativity finishing at the basket, and can shoot. Obviously no one has ever looked bad in a highlight video, but I definitely liked what I saw. Kruger loves having three guards who can initiate offense on the floor so he'll have every opportunity to make an impact during his career.

I like this signing. Seems like a sleeper ... my big concern though is roster balance. We've got 5 posts and doesn't seem like we'll be bringing in another next year.

Guys on Twitter from that area and then Meyer said

Very unselfish good shooter great passer late bloomer "sound familiar"

meh.

there are qualities you want to see on your squad that outweigh specific positions. you sign those when you can and deal with position issues later. a guy with handles, scoring ability, passing ability, and can run the offense? yeah. you take him ... especially if he's a good kid. guardplay trumps anyway.

Well said! Shepherd seems to fit all of the qualities on your list.

Signing manek is going to blow up in our face possibly.

I wasnt blown away with that highlight tape.. seemed like Carl blair more than Isaiah cousins imo

I'd be shocked if he plays next year.. strong surely has to be better

I just don't like how it makes the roster so unbalanced. But for all we know, somebody else might not be happy, or might potentially not make it (Strong?). Also creates a log jam with playing time at the 1-3 spots, especially with the kids we're recruiting for the 2017 class. I trust Lon, this just seems like a reach given what we as fans currently know.

It seemed like the 2017 class was going to be our best recruiting class under Kruger with all the interest we have been getting by highly rank kids and now with this commitment taking away a 2017 scholarship and Theo John most likely going to commit, it looks like another typical recruiting class is about to happen.

To have a chance to land some top 50/top 25 talent and to have no scholarships available is just displeasing.
