Kentucky and Wisconson Thread

Could not BELIEVE that the refs did not call a flagrant 1 foul in the second half!

They reviewed the play, said, "let's play on".

They didn't even call it a foul, to the best of my knowledge...

This was a great Kentucky team, but not an all-time great. They wouldn't have ran the table in the Big XII, SEC, or ACC. They would have still won the Big XII, but not the ACC, and they would have had a dogfight with Wisconsin in the Big X (and I think that would end up like tonight).

If Harrison were white, and Kaminsky were black, Harrison's career would be officially over.

Actually, that's probably not true. Professional sports has proven over and over again that the only thing they care about is a player's talent. Character is of little or no importance to them.

If I were a Kentucky fan, I would be embarrassed at his comments and furious that he represented his school and state in such a negative way. Hundreds of players have gone through press conferences after losing in the Final Four. How many have responded like Harrison? The overwhelming majority made their comments without embarrassing themselves or their school.

Wisconsin started 2 Seniors, a Junior and 2 Sophomores. Two other Seniors scored points.

Kentucky started 1 Junior, 2 Sophomores and 2 Freshman. Two other freshmen scored.

I think experience counts.

Excerpt:

When a reporter asked Karl-Anthony Towns what made Frank Kaminsky so difficult to defend in Wisconsin's 71-64 victory over the previously undefeated Wildcats, Harrison appeared to mutter "F--- that N----" under his breath at the mention of the Badgers forward. Harrison tweeted an apology early Tuesday morning and said he'd spoken to Kaminsky.

Seriously. There is no double-standard. Nothing to see here.

(Tuesday? Yahoo needs some editors.)

Why do people complain about a so-called double standard? Are they irritated because it's a word they want to use? Are they irritated because they feel like there was nothing wrong with the fraternity song and the boys shouldn't have gotten in trouble?

I posted earlier that I would be embarrassed if I were a Kentucky fan, just as I was embarrassed as an OU fan and a former Greek at OU. But, I only have control over the words I use. I only have influence over the words my kids use and grandkids use. Not all people raise their kids to be aware of the words they use. Not all schools do a good job of training their student athletes to talk to the press.

The Kentucky player embarrassed himself and his school with his classless behavior. The fact that there might not be the outrage from the social media masses doesn't change that fact.

...

Wow! Are you saying I want to use this word? Where is the irritation you speak of? Just making an observation is not a "complaint". To some of us, there does seem to be a double-standard. Pretty simple. The use of that word is not a good thing, no matter who uses it. In the news article, it says that the black man directed the word at the white man. It is bad either way.

Is it not?

The context, intent and setting of Harrison's remarks are not even remotely similar to the OU, Ferguson or Sterling racist debacles. Far from being offended Kaminsky likely laughed and took the words as a compliment for his dominant performance.

The tiny minority of dopey white people trying to promote fictional reverse racism and equate unrelated incidents like this are ignored by the intelligent masses.

No, I don't think you want to use the word. But I've met you and have a basis for that opinion.

I'm saying that I don't understand what irritates people about the double standard. On the list of things that bother me about race relation problems in the USA, it would fall at or near the bottom of the list.

Who said they were?

If two incidents are not even remotely related how can there be a double standard when one triggers widespread outrage and the other draws a yawn? It makes no sense.

News flash white people do not get to determine what offends the masses.

Fair enough. I understand what you are saying. I don't think we are far apart here. In a perfect world, there would be no double-standards, but human beings are not capable of utopia. I doubt that humans can even agree what utopia would be.

I hope that we can agree that a racist word or phrase should not be directed at someone of another race, whether in anger or in "jest."

Given that we (as a country) still have a long ways to go on race relations, it is only natural that someone's "hot button" can be pushed by phrases like double-standard. We all have our sensitivities. I can see where you are coming from.

This is no way means that the OU SAE episode and the UK press conference are equally bad. I hope that some good comes from recent episodes like the SAE incident. The punishment received by the frat members was justified, in my opinion. Behavior will never change if there are no consequences.

The embarrassment caused by the UK player's comments, and the resulting apology is sufficient punishment in that case, IMHO.

MsProud, we have seen some things improve during out lifetimes. We (as a country) still have a ways to go.

OMG, the broadcast crew is really driving me crazy. It's obvious they want the Wildcats to win. *****ing about every single call that does not go Kentucky's way - seeing walking left and right but only when Wisconsin does it.. lol

Okay, rant over - Wisconsin is hanging in there thus far.

Man I did the same thing. I was watching the Kentucky stream and they were calling for travels, fouls, just about everything and was about to come unglued until I realized what I was watching. I promptly turned it to the national stream and began to breathe a little easier. :ez-laugh:
