Lack of talent is OU men's basketball team's biggest problem

The Oklahoman's OU men's basketball beat writer Mike Baldwin answered questions from readers in today's Power Lunch chat. Read the entire chat recap here. Participate in our Power Lunch chats Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. at NewsOK.com/sports

On the biggest problem with Oklahoma's basketball team:

Talent. More specifically size. The effort has been very good, much different from a year ago. They simply don't match up with top level teams. Keep in mind Capel had to sign six players in April and May just to fill out a roster. There usually aren't that many good players left that late in the recruiting process.

On whether Jeff Capel will return as coach next season:

I think so. My guess is Joe C. will give him at least through next season (2011-12). The only thing that could cost him his job is the NCAA allegations from a year ago but I've been told he should be fine.

On the ongoing NCAA investigation into the program:

Nothing new. It's been almost nine months. The NCAA takes its time. But because Capel wasn't mentioned it's doubtful the NCAA will do anything since the parties involved are no longer with the program. Keep in mind it wasn't a recruiting issue where people left behind sometimes get unfairly penalized. This was an illegal loan, the type of things that lead to suspensions, not sanctions.

On if the addition of the Thunder to the metro area has taken away attendance from OU:

Thunder has had sellouts in 16 of 19 games and at a much higher ticket price. So yes, you have to say it's affected attendance. OU always had problems with non-conference games, long before the Thunder hit town. This year OU home games probably have been between 2,500 and 4,000 most games. Should improve some in conference play. But in a down season, who knows?

...and the sky is blue and the sun rises in the east.

Really hope this is the case.
