Man....

Who is advising Joe C on the hire? Are any of the big donors like Elmore getting a say in this hiring?

It is only taking this long because someone keeps winning. It is silent because there is nothing to talk about until someone loses. All signs point to this right now.

I think all signs may be pointing to this because everyone keeps making the signs point that way. Realistically it is a longshot, but I hope it happens. Until someone hears it from the horses mouth, no real stock can be placed in it being true.

That is a slap in the face to a coach that took us to the cusp of a national championship.

Say what you want about Capel, but the FACTS remain that if it was not for the best UNC team of the decade, we would have cut down the nets with Blake & Capel.
How is that a fact? Even if they beat UNC, they had two more wins to go.

And the slap in the is intended for the coach that didn't bring us to the cusp, but actually did produce back to back losing seasons.

I went to every home game and several away games that season, and when BG was healthy we were easily one of the 2 best teams in the country.

If you cannot recognize that then you didn't watch enough bball that season.

That same coach also was 4-2 in the NCAA tourney after just 3 seasons. He resurrected our crumbling program in 1 season basically. He signed more High School AAs in his short time here than any OU coach before him. Of course we are back in the dumps, but the guy deserves a little bit more respect considering his entire body of work, IMO.

I'm all for giving Coach Capel credit where it's due, but we were hardly a "crumbling program" when he took over. He did deal with a brief probation and the loss of a couple of strong players (though one might question whether he should have been able to convince those players to stay), but the program was in much better shape when he took it over than when he left it.

I don't see how you can question this...these are 17-18 year old kids, they're going to do what they want. Majority of players make their college choice based on the coach, when that variable changes, usually so does the player's view of the program.

Blame the university for letting them out of their LOI's.

Not letting players out of their LOI in situations like that is not a good idea. Do you really want guys on your team that don't want to be there? Not exactly great for team chemistry and morale.

Probation + loss of scholarships + a bare cupboard in terms of talent + poor fan support = a crumbling program

Why do you think we got Capel? IMO, it was due to any big name coach knowing they were in a better position where they were, than to walk into our situation at the time.

The ncaa would have probably let them out of their LOI if they asked for it, had we not let them out.

It still pains me to think how if we had either Reynolds and/or James we would have mopped the floor with UNC. Keith Clark may have been enough for us, if he could make it to class.

I buy all but the bolded point. It has been shown many many times that the cupboard was not Bare. AJ, Nate, Taylor, Longar were here. That is talent

I think we can all agree those players got significantly better after the arrival of Jeff Capel. The argument can be made that Capel made those guys who we remember them to be instead of who they were when he arrived.

Wasn't Michael Neal on the roster before Capel? He was nice!

So would you say that OU has even better talent returning for next season?

Cam, Newell, PLedge, Fitz, Osby, Blair, Washington, Neal

Before someone says it, yes, Blake Griffin could have carried any coach to the tournament, but Capel got him to come to OU. That is what good college coaches do, they get the best players they can.

Yes it was a slap in the face to Capel, he can take the slap 'cause he just got $2million buyout for getting fired.

Blake's elite 8 team wasn't going to win the N.C., because that team couldn't bring the ball up the court against a press. Most of that teams few loses was against teams that pressed us IIRC, and the blueprint was public knowledge. Against NC, our best option was having Blake bring the ball up the court.

I think a better coach would have one a NC with Blake, but Capel recruited Blake and he gets 100% credit for that.

They lost 6 games the ENTIRE year with 3-4 of those coming after BG got injured...it MAY have been the "blueprint", but it didn't work often and only a few times AFTER BG was injured.

Exactly.

Not to mention our team defense was horrible and we had no offense except throw the ball to Blake.

Capel was a terrible coach. Heck of a nice guy, but a terrible coach and maybe even a worse recruiter.

The point I am trying to make is that if Capel was bad as some on here think, then I fear for whoever gets the job next.

I won't argue with you on all of what you posted, because we've done it before and neither agree on it, but I will refer you to my post 36 above...we lost 6 friggin games...3-4 after BG was injured.

Let me get this straight..Getting the ball in the hands of the best player in the country every time down the court is "terrible coaching"?

Have you sent your resume in to Joe C yet? I am sure he is waiting anxiously...

He went up against KU, Duke, UK, Unc, Texas, OSU, etc., in order to land Blake, Willie, Tiny, Cam, etc. Kelvin Sampson never got a player that KU was actively recruiting in this region. If Capel is as bad a recruiter as you say, then Kelvin must have been the worst recruiter of all-time, right?

For the record, I do not want Capel back. I trust Joe C, he is the best AD in the country.
