McGusty and Freeman officials visit (scout)

Cool. It's important for the players to bond. They spend a lot more hours away from the court than they do on the court.

That was a fun read. I'm excited for this year but next year seems like it will be just as exciting!

Great read! Justin Hite is the best around when it comes to reporting on OU basketball.

How can you not be excited about our 2016 recruiting class? Forget where this class ranks nationally, which is something to be proud of on its own. We know at least three members of the class will continue a trend that started with Hield and Cousins: they're gym rats.

How does LK and his staff attract these kids to OU? Do they run an ad that says, "all gym rats apply here?"

Ada, I believe the ad actually reads: "All really good kids who are talented basketball players and are also gym rats apply here." :ez-laugh:

I like that better, scrybe! That's definitely the kind of recruits our coaches are targeting. It's paying huge dividends, too.

I think it comes down to how long Kruger and Henson have been at it. They know their way around the recruiting trail and know how to spot who is a gym rat early on.

I agree but credit also goes to Chris Crutchfield and Lew Hill. It takes the whole staff to recruit effectively. Even the GA's help out when the recruits come to campus. No doubt the staff has a plan.

Crutch and Hill and Henson really work the trails. Henson had Manyang and freeman I think, crutch had Buddy, Hill had Cousins.. So they all pull there weight for sure. Different regions, different kids... obviously many are joint efforts.

Personalities are huge part.

I meant no disrespect to Crutch and Hill in my post. The whole staff does great work

I like this breakdown of recruiting responsibilites for the 3 assistant coaches described in an interview with Chris Crutchfield. It's been posted before but is still a good description.

What would you say is your focus in recruiting?

We all recruit nationally. We kind of break up certain areas. I have Dallas and Central Texas. Lew does Houston. I’ll do the southeastern part of the country, a little in the Midwest. Steve has the Midwest. I have some kids in St. Louis and Minneapolis. Steve has the whole state of Kansas. We haven’t really broken up the states. I’m from Kentucky originally, so I’ll dibble-dabble in Kentucky. Lew pretty much does all the East Coast. . . . We’ve done it that way since we’ve been here. It’s not on paper. We just kind of just worked it out between us. A lot of people don’t do it that way. . . . We all kind of have our people around the country that we constantly stay in contact with.

Do you guys break it down by position at all?

We do. Me and Lew do the guards and Steve does the bigs. That’s how we’ve done it since we’ve been here.
