My experience in Baton Rouge was wonderful. I was there for three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and wore my OU gear every day, all day long. I wore OU Crimson & Cream gear in bars and restaurants, on a tour of the State Capitol, at a Mardi Gras parade on Friday night, on a long walk downtown to a visit a local brewery, in hotel lobbies, on the LSU campus, and at the game. I was greeted with smiles, the occasional “welcome to Baton Rouge” and the occasional friendly comments about the upcoming game. I saw other Sooner fans at “The Chimes” restaurant & bar near campus prior to the game, and everyone appeared to be having a great time. I walked across campus twice on Saturday and no student said anything bad to me.

Inside the arena, I sat in the upper corner behind the LSU bench, and at the opposite end of the arena from the student section. My seats were about halfway up the arena. In other words, I was far away from the student section and did not see the bad behavior of some of the students. After the game, when we heard what happened, my LSU friends were upset and embarrassed that some LSU students acted with such poor sportsmanship.

Before, during and after the game, nobody said anything bad to me, nor to the other OU fans who were sitting nearby inside the arena. It is sad that a few bad apples (students in this case) can reflect badly on a fan-base. I say “few” but this is just a guess. I really do not know how many students were involved in the throwing of objects from the stands and the other bad behavior. (Obviously, the F-U chants involved a larger number of students.)

Of course, BEING THERE for a big win on the road is always fun-fun-fun. I mean, it is really fun.

Inside the arena after the game, I saw other OU fans hanging around inside the arena for a good while to “take it all in.” We were all having a good time and there was absolutely no “abuse” directed toward us by any LSU fans. But again, we were no where near the student section, but at the opposite end of the arena. While walking to the parking lot after the game, there were no insults or bad comments hurled in my direction. Instead, I overheard discussions that expressed disappointment and questioned LSU coaching decisions.

Late Saturday night after the game, we went to “Sammy’s” restaurant and bar. I still had my OU gear on, and as before, everyone was pleasant and friendly.

For what it is worth, that was my experience. It is a good memory that I will think about fondly in future years as I (hopefully) continue to make road trips to Sooner basketball games. I look forward to returning to Baton Rouge sometime in the future. I had a good time there.

The students (some of them) were obviously out of control during and after the game. I, like most Sooner fans, watched the game on TV and with my surround sound audio system, the chants of "F-U Buddy Hield" were very audible when Buddy went to the free throw line.

Students will be students, and them being rude and obnoxious is just part of the game. But those chants and what was reported to have happened after the game ended are inexcusable, even for LSU fans.

this very much matches my road game football experiences @lsu

Thanks
You were very fortunate !!!

not fortunate pretty normal for lsu road trips .. @ baton rouge

Glad you had a good trip. I had the opposite experience at the 2003-4 National Championship game in New Orleans. It has forever jaded me towards anyone or anything related to LSU.

So for those of us watching on TV at home, the game broadcast opened with an LSU student in the middle of the screen flipping both birds to I assume the OU team. That was the very first scene for us watching the game.

Anytime they showed the students it seemed they were saying "F--- you" as you could read it on their lips or flipping birds. I saw it at least 2-3 more times.

Then you have the chant they were saying when Buddy was shooting FT's.

:facepalm

The question is not whether you saw the bad behavior but whether you heard it. It was loud and clear on TV. I realize there were things after the game as well but their university officials have to be embarrassed about the Buddy chant.

Exactly the same as me. I went into a restaurant in NO and even the manager of the place started talking trash to me but he did add that he was glad I was in there spending my money. I told him he was wrong about that and we got up and left. I expected crap from the average LSU fan but was surprised that almost all of them are average LSU fans.

I was there in 03-04 for same game. Same experience as you. Those things called people in NO before and after the game were sub-human wastes of matter. If the world ever gets an enema, the hose/bulb will be placed in New Orleans, the asshole of the world. My impression of the entire state.

I don't recall that from TV. I believe you but I just didn't notice. When was it? (I taped the game and started watching about 10 minutes into the game. I was using fast forward to catch up on virtually very dead ball.)

When Buddy was shooting FTs in the first half. 1:11 left in first half.

put me in the 03 NO Sugar Bowl not a fan of LSU fans. some of them were great, in the hotel.....but most were terrible people. and didn't represent their school or life in a way i would. we have morons, for sure......but this was amazing moron stuff.

Yup, same here

That sounds like a helluva trip, SoonerTraveler!

-jealous sooner stuck in ohio

Glad you had a great experience there Traveler..curious as to how the PMAC sounded to you as Buddy was reigning 3s during their comeback and how people around you reacted to that LSU drive at the buzzer that Lattin blocked

Last time I was down there someone took my battery out of my pickup. Lucky for me guy came by and had a used one that was a perfect fit for my truck

I will probably watch my tape again. I will pay attention. I might have fast forwarded through free throws. I do that sometimes when I want to get to live action.

I had exactly the same experience. We went to Chimes before the game for lunch - quite a few OU fans. Sat in the upper level with several LSU fans that are close friends of mine - I was decked out OU from head to toe. Nothing but people talking about what a great game. It was an excellent experience. I had the same experience when they beat us in softball last year - there was nothing like the basketball student section happening. I thought the build up to the game was really good. I actually enjoyed the LSU band performance before the game.

I literally laughed out loud at this response, because I didn't catch the obvious when I first read the "extra battery" comment. That would be quite the racket, steal batteries and then sell other stolen batteries to the people you stole from!

Imagine that! How much did he charge you?
