NCAA Tournament - Friday Games

Santa Clara was trying to call a timeout.
Which is kind of my point. If they’d gotten a timeout, they’d probably have been in position to foul successfully. But the way it played out, it would have been tough to get to him before he was in the act of shooting.

So you agree they should have fouled? He literally was dribbling up the sideline with a guy on him. Perfect way to foul.

The clock stops after a make right? I wonder if Santa Clara would have been better off just fouling Garrison. He won't be on the court now.

Ooh, they left Garrison on the court. Just foul him away from the ball. Dumb to not try that and instead foul Oweh.

I know it's not done often, but that is inexcusable. If they are going to leave Garrison on the court, you 100% foul him away from the ball. Put a body on him, hip check him out of bounds, wrap him up if he tries to move, there are ways to make it not an intentional foul. I don't understand not doing that.

Is it like the NBA where if you foul away from the ball under 2 minutes it’s an intentional foul?

You do realize that's an intentional foul correct?
No it isn't.

You don't think what they did to Oweh was an intentional foul? You can foul somebody off the ball, you have to sell it a little more than somebody with the ball. All fouls are intentional in that situation. So what is your point?

I've seen it done many times. Moreso in the NBA, I think, but that used to be a thing. Foul away from the ball. UK was dumb to leave him on the floor.

Back to my point, it would have been MUCH easier to sell a foul on Garrison if you don't call the timeout and just go get tangled up with him.

Doesn't look like it would have mattered because the refs missed the Santa Clara coach calling for a timeout after the 3 to set up the defense and they missed the clock starting late allowing Oweh to get a dribble and a few steps with no time running off.

1. Intentional Foul Designation
Under NCAA rules, fouling a player who does not have the ball—especially if it's done solely to stop the clock or target a poor free-throw shooter—can be ruled an Intentional Foul.

My two cents but the Jimmy and joes are the difference in basketball… so much more than most sports.

Only so many set plays and offenses you run.

Upsets happen because either one team gets hot or one doesn’t…

Hofstra hanging with bama for now.

CAN be. Any foul CAN be ruled an intentional foul. If a player has the ball and you go up and bear hug him, that should probably be an intentional foul.

There are ways to do it. It's why I personally hate the fouling up 3 thing, because those fouls are usually blatantly obviously intentional, and never get called. I think they should call more intentional fouls, but they don't. Grabbing a guys jersey as he dribbles by you, to stop the clock, should be intentional. But you'll never see it called. Ever.

I still stand by my original post. The best thing Santa Clara could have done would have been to foul Garrison immediately after the make. Run into him. Get tangled up. There are a million ways to have done it that wouldn't have drawn an intentional foul call, and Garrison would have been the one shooting FT's, not Oweh.
