Need More Talent

Oh no, these must be our worst players!

Tanner Groves --- -12
Rick Issanza ----- -12
CJ Noland -------- -18
Ethan Chargois -- -18
Jordan Goldwire -- -25
Jalen Hill ---------- -33
Elijah Harkless --- -60

Surely there is a way to disguise Groves somewhere in the defense.

I'm going to keep posting this, but dude needs to LIVE in the gym this offseason. He needs to get strong. Upper and lower body. And he needs to work on his athleticism. Speed drills. Agility drills. All of it.

Just got caught up on the conversation. My take:

Need more athletes yes, need better shooting yes. Biggest issues I've seen is Harkless and up and down play.. really had high expectations for him. Thought he could have been a 14ppg guy.

Goldwire just can't shoot at all. I'd lean towards giving Cortes more minutes because it's his job next year or the incoming freshman.

Jalen Hill started the season off great.. First 10 games great. Guy has completely lost in the last 6-8 games. He's shooting the ball poorly, but the main concern is he isn't even attempting to shoot it anymore. The guy needs to be on the wing, open up a spot on roster for a true 4/5. Bishop(texas) would be a great type of player to add. Let Hill run the court, shoot open shots and play defense from the wing spot. We get longer/more athletic by doing this.

Gibson is not the issue in my mind. The guy I think is actually are second best player behind Groves at the moment. He tries hard(just small) great shooter that is having to handle the ball more and attempt more 2pt shots which is hurting his 3pt pct.. but I think he may be a top 2-3 shooter in the big 12.

Next season: Hope would be add a big that can take Hill's starting spot. I'd like Harkless or Gibson to come back if not them add a nice transfer wing.
PG - Cortes or FR
SG - Noland - Transfer
SF - Hill - Transfer or Harkless
PF - Transfer
C - Groves

Yes Gibson is our best 3 point shooter but other teams know that. He's so slight that it's easy to just run him off the line and make him hurt you on the drive and/or dish. He can't get his own shot but neither can anyone else on the team.

At this point he's about as athletic as he's going to get. He can get stronger but it's very difficult to gain athleticism. In fact, I can't think of a single player that has noticeably gained athleticism after getting to the college level.

There is, you said it and I agreed, a zone. The coaches are paid to decide which zone is the most effective against the teams we’re playing.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A man defense is only as good as your weakest link. If it’s Tanner, we danged sure can’t bench our top scorer and arguably our best player.

A good help defense will only go so far. Besides, this team can’t seem to sustain their energy level on defense anymore. Maybe it’s time to switch to a zone on occasion, to hide our weaknesses (yes, we have more than one) in a man to man defense.

He needs to go see Schmitty everyday with football.

I can think of one. Blake Griffin spent an entire summer with an elite trainer in California working out and running the sand dunes. He was stronger and a better athlete when he came back. That’s not me saying it. Blake and the people around him were making those claims.

Big kid! Is OU showing an interest?

What are your thoughts on Brennan Rigsby? I assume you have had a chance to watch some of the highlight videos I posted.

His raw athleticism surprised as well as impressed me! He’s definitely a play above the rim player with his hops!

From the link, OU is talking to Foumena "heavily".

I watched some of the videos you linked and one on youtube (juco highlights)...

He has a little bit of Austin Reaves in his game. Capable shooter, good athleticism, and an edge to him. OU doesn't have a scholarship as of today but if a couple become free, I'd have no issue with OU offering/taking him.

Blake was already an uber-athlete when he got to Oklahoma.

Correct, he just got in elite shape which got him to reach his potential athleticism.

Right, and Tanner Groves can get in elite shape as well. It will help him but I doubt if he's ever going to be noticeably more athletic.

I agree 100% that conditioning is key to becoming a better athlete. No player will reach his full potential if he’s not in shape.

I doubt he's ever tried. I agree he isn't going to turn into Blake Griffin, athletically, but I think if he put the effort in, you'd see a noticeable change. I see A LOT of room for improvement. Wouldn't take much to be noticeable.

You don't think T. Groves has ever tried to get more athletic & quicker? Some guys just aren't good athletes compared to other D1 athletes.

A buddy was visiting me back in December and we watched an OU game together; it was his first time to see Tanner play. His first comment: "He looks like a post player from the '70s who time traveled."

Yeah I’m sure he’s never done any agility drills or lifted weights lol

I guess they have a spot now...

If you compared him to Custer you’re clueless.

He’s 6’3 freak(ish) athlete.

Juco guard.
