From this weekend, OU is in his top 4 along with UNC, KU and Texas.

I like his unselfish play. His game reminds me of TJ Taylor's. Shame things turned out the way they did for TJ. Pretty sure Marquette will reap the benefits of his departure from here.

I really wasn't big on TJ or Smart. I don't really understand the fascination with these guys. Neither seem to possess elite speed, ball-handling or athleticism. They appear to be "off the bench players" imo.

Personally, I think that Taylor could have developed into a stronger player than what Smart may be, but that doesn't mean I think that either will be stars. Your analysis of their skills is pretty good, but I still think we need players like this on our roster. I don't mean to imply that I think either are world beaters, but they both look/looked to be solid guys who could provide value to a university over 4 years. Guys like this are key pieces to the puzzle because they are usually the guys that end up providing fairly steady production and will occassionally have an exceptional game that lifts us over the top when the bigger "star" player(s) aren't performing at their prime. Sure you don't want a team full of these guys, but having one or two guys who show the ability to get in the lane, make a shot, or find the open man (albeit sometimes with less than stellar handles, speed, and in some cases athleticism) is a great asset to have at your disposal.

Yes, I agree with your assessment. Those types of guys are valuable.

Smart is the type of kid and player you want in your locker room for 4 years, on the practice court, all those cliches. His attitude and internal motor are what makes Smart standout.

You're right, none of his physical attributes are what you consider elite and I think that could hold him back from being a elite player at the Big 12 level. But he's still going to be a really good player for 4 years.

He is likely going to be the type of player heading into his senior season that conference opponents are going to be going "He's still there? That guy has been there forever". Any team he's at will consider him a fan favorite.

He's a prototypical Kelvin Sampson lunch pail guard.

That's cool Sam, as long as we don't load up the entire roster with these types. I agree that you have to have some blue collar guys on a championship roster.

An entire roster of recruits ranked between 50 and 150 could be an outstanding college basketball team. I don't how good Smart will be (or Taylor) but I would have no problem with a roster full of guys like them; provided, OU was recruiting a team rather than individuals. By that I mean you can succeed with kids that are not elite provided they are built for your system and their role in your system. Renzi Stone was a very effective player for OU. Jabarri Brown was an effective player for OU. Tim Heskett was an effective player for OU.

The elite scorers want to have guys like Marcus Smart on their team. No doubt about that.
